@Knife Grinders, Thank you for taking the time to point out the “lunacy” of the tapered rods. I would have thought that common sense alone would be enough to save others the trouble. I don’t have any experience with the dremel, or there various wheels available for them, so I cannot comment from experience on them. I’ve made it a point not to own any serrated knives, aside from a Ka-Bar #1282. The serrations on that is somewhat unique, which allows for lightly sharpening the face of the serrations, and then carefully deburring the backside. This particular knife, I was able to get the serrations very sharp, but it was at the cost of making them slightly smaller, which I did on ceramic whet stones. The #1282 is a D2 steel blade. Because serrations come in drastically different shapes and sizes, I have never been able to find what I would consider an acceptable method of sharpening them across the board, and thus, I personally avoid them. With serrated kitchen knives, the only method I’ve found, is to ever so slightly grind the backside, at a very low angle. This of course, is not acceptable in the long run, and is only a last resort, to make the knife useful for a short time.

Hi Scott, I also own the Ka-Bar extreme fighter in D2, and could never figure out how to approach its very unique serrations. So thank you for sharing your experience.

What about the ones that come up when you search for mortise bit sharpening, I haven't tried it yet but I got a couple of those for the corner of a bush hook knife and I thought of them for serration also.

I quite buying serrated blade knives years ago because of sharping. And I don't find they cut any better than a well sharpened regular blade.

How would you suggest deburring serrations if you don’t have a tormek with your special wheels? Thanks for video.

I do not understand your question. Do you mean powered sharpening other than Tormek?

Sharpen the flat side on a benchstone till you get the burr in the serrations; use a fine stone so that have the minimal burr. Run a regular bristle brush on Dremel at high RPM into ZAP or Green Rouge to load the bristles with the honing compound. Change the Dremel RPM to 5000, and work with the bristle brush in the serrations to remove the burr. Finish with 3-5 passes flat side on a firm strop.

I use spyderco sharpmaker corner to just swap it back and forth. Then when it’s almost gone, strop the non sharpened side with high grit diamond paste. Doing this on k390 is very difficult lol

Always trust a dude with TF2 Medic's accent when it comes to sharpening knives. If Heavy trusts him, you can too. Just check for Red or Blu compatibility.

I knew I disliked the tapered rod. It seemed like such a finnicky idiot way to sharpen serrations. Imma go mutilate mummies bread knife untill I am confident enough to sharpen my Ka-Bars serrations.
