One Light Rim Light | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There are many ways to create rim-lit portraits or product shots and most of them involve the use of multiple lights or flashes. But there is a way to achieve the perfect rim-lit portrait with just one flash and one medium to a large-sized softbox.
As Gavin Hoey demonstrates, a single small flash placed behind your subject will create unflattering rim light. And in a small home studio that light will bounce off the walls and back onto your subject. But a large light source, such as a softbox, creates wrap-around light that is a lot more controllable.
Gavin shows how a low-tech, DIY black background placed against a softbox creates amazing rim light from just one light. But he doesn’t stop there. Next, he adds a colored gel and later some smoke to elevate the look even further.
Finally, Gavin takes you into Photoshop and creates a split-toned gel look with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Thank you Gavin!! What an amazing trick and demonstration. Just last night I was wondering about black foamcore to reshape an octobox into a stripbox… it kinda blows my mind that putting foamcore in the center creates this other outcome so well. Your videos are the first I watched in learning techniques, and now part of my living is through photography. So, thank you for your spirit, enthusiasm and generosity!!

Met Gavin at the NEC photography show a few years back and have always admired his way to show in simple terms.

Very grateful for this. Sometimes there is genius in simplicity. Recently, I was stuck without a softbox but I had a window that had terrific natural light through it. Inspired by this video I grabbed a very soft solid black t-shirt and used my backdrop clamps to attach it to the blackout drapes in the room, thereby creating a reasonable effect similar to the one in the video, with about 4" of light on either side, about 6" of light below and a little more light above. It took me 3 shots to get the settings on my Nikon sussed and to figure out where to set the height. I used 2 lenses and in a total time, including setup, of less than 30 minutes I got a couple dozen gorgeous pictures that are getting really positive feedback. Best part was a really happy model who didn't have to wait for endless setups, retakes, or hold poses for extended periods of time. Would have never thought of even trying that improvised setup if I hadn't seen this video, so I thought I'd definitely share the extension of the approach. Many thanks!
