    I love how you can tell how much Todd likes a song by how intensely he plays it. You can tell he loves this song because he goes hard as hell on the piano at the start.

    Martha Wash really made this song. Her voice was a mix of power, agility and stamina. She is one of the most underrated vocalists in the game who has been praised by everyone from Elton John to Whitney Houston. Her dance music of the 90s in particular her debut solo album is still killer and deserves far more acknowledgement.

    There is a "Female Gaze," but it gets confused with being "Easy." Women want to choose their guy and having a big selection is kind of like sexual heaven. That's what the Weather Girls were singing about. You hear "It's Raining Men" at ladies who love ladies nights a lot too because it is really about being able to choose who you are taking home, and not having to settle for your third choice.

  • @ruminationstation4200

    @ruminationstation4200

    2 жыл бұрын

    ...its a song literally written by 2 men. It's a projection of the assumption of how women view the world, but it's in no way shape or form a reflection of the female gaze seeing as how it wasn't written by women. It's a male written song about a promiscuous woman, which is why Donna Summer got offended cause she was tired of being the sex lady. It's literally just an inversion of the male gaze with some women performers slapped on top. I love the song, don't get me wrong. But I connect it a lot more with PRIDE than feminism, other than being performed by some bad ass ladies, it's really not a women's song.

    @@HSMiyamoto Neither the person who replied to you nor Todd said it was about heterosexuality, more about the way men consume and aspire to sex compared to women (in general, you will find people feeling differently in both camps) which does explain why it would be very popular with gay men. But your argument about just having a selection and this being about choice more than about having a herd of human sex toys sounds valid to me as well. I just think the song sounds good, I never thought much about the lyrics (I mean... I'm asexual so either way the lyrics don't do much for me ^^) but it is very possible a lot of people interpret it the way you do.

    @@mayaklast6334 - It's also important to note that "It's Raining Men!" also fits in the long history of gay men hiding their sexual desires by writing from a female perspective. Look at "Mad about the Boy" by Noel Coward, which even says that the boy "has a gay appeal." Here's an excerpt from the lyrics, which Coward wrote to keep his song from being censored under English law of the time. Lord knows I'm not a fool-girl I really shouldn't care Lord knows I'm not a school-girl In the flurry of her first affair Will it ever cloy This odd diversity of misery and joy I'm feeling quite insane and young again And all because I'm mad about the boy

The observation that men tend to fantasize about women (plural) vs that women tend to fantasize about a man (singular) is really interesting. The fact that more than one music video from the early 90's chose to have a thin, younger woman lip sync to Martha Wash's voice was absolutely deplorable. That woman is a national treasure on a level with our greatest soul singers. Had they done something like that to Aretha Franklin or Patti Labelle, those women would have gutted them like a fish.

    I'm 90% sure this song is the reason I'm practically a faux queen. I adore it. Also, girls dont fantasize about the male gender mainly because we're socialized so differently. We're not taught to "practice" or "experiment" with boys. But, deep down, we can be just as perverted and horny as guys can be. So when a song like this comes out...it's like our animal instinct is suddenly set free. It also helps that it's a really catchy song.

    i've found that some particularly odd men can't stand to think of women doing normal human things. it's kinda creepy in-person, but at turns funny and sad thinking back on it. seeing a blokey-bloke type comedian on tv going all ultra sensitive about catching a glimpse of leg shaving, like what seriously that bothers you? "we don't wanna know you have hair" is how he put it. grow up, you baby! or, this guy once told me "women don't fart, they parp" was all i could do not to laugh, but he was deadly serious. had to call it something else just to mentally process it, probably imagined it somehow smelling not as bad too. like holy shit, some of the mental acrobatics just to keep up this weird fiction of us being some kind of other species or something. ridiculous. wouldn't surprize me if guys jumping to the conclusion that women are incapable of overt lust comes from a similar place. like, that'd be too human or something. we're not people, we're porcelain angels, right? magical purity vessels from heaven, innocent and weak. gah! hate it. what a load of old bollocks. anyway, good to get that rant out of my system, lol. annoying is right. who the hell goes around assuming limits to sexuality anyway, like how does that make any sense? there aren't any limits. doesn't matter who it is, you can't tell before you've met them. there's no way. i've probably overstated this a bit. it's not often you see it being talked about.

    @@Torthrodhel I know your comment is old but I'm currently bingeing Todd's videos and reading comments, lol. One thing I'd add here though in terms of women and sexuality is that yes, women can be the same as men but we also are the ones who get pregnant. The idea of having a child suddenly can kind of curtail the desire for wanting frequent partners, at least that's why I personally would rather have a "man" than "men", lol. Yes, it takes two to tango, but we all know the stories of guys leaving and maybe paying child support, which is paltry compared to the actual cost of raising a child. So that too can add to why women are brought up differently or may behave differently about sex.

  • @Torthrodhel

    @@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley interesting perspective, one I sadly don't share, given an inability to become pregnant. Guess I'm not so connected sometimes. Explains it a little bit. Of course everyone takes it way too far, because almighty gender roles must be bowed to and all that nonsense. Nevertheless yeah that's a thought I hadn't considered, good point. Being in an open relationship probably makes me a bit different too and sometimes I do forget how infrequently that ends up suiting people. No worries on the year-later response btw, I do that all the time lol. Can't expect people not to in a format like this. It's good to binge. :)

    @Peruvian Leftist Fella well yeah a lot of prejudices get very deliberately self-reinforced. People are like that because that's how they get the impression they're supposed to be, while at the same time, them being like that gets assumed "the natural way of things" because "look evidence" by people who don't think too far on it. Which with what everyone has to deal with in this needlessly overcomplicated life, you honestly can't sometimes blame people for.

    If you are interested in who the big-girl soul duo precursor to The Weather Girls were, you can check out the (also one-hit wonders) The Soul Sisters. Their biggest song was "I Can't Stand It" released on Sue Records in 1964. Many groups covered it because it was so good, such as Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood, Betty Everett & Jerry Butler, Cliff Bennett and The Rebel Rousers, Genya Ravan, and more recently Holly Golightly. - Other excellent songs by the Soul sisters are I Won't Be Your Fool No More (my favorite); Some Soul Food, and a kick-ass version of Loop-De-Loop, also on Sue Records. For the Checker Records label they recorded Just How Much Can One Heart Take? under the name The Kolettes. The Soul Sisters were like Weather Girls, also had a growly low voice/wailing high voice combination going on, and they did it two decades earlier.
