I miss those days seeing Joe and Leo. I started having them cut my hair in the late 1960s. They were originally located around the corner on Francis Lewis Blvd. There were always some of their countrymen getting their haircut and Leo and Joe would be talking to them in Italian. I’ll bet our paths crossed in there at one point.

One of my favorite automotive teachers/ mentors taught me to anneal copper crush washers when replacing them on banjo style fittings. His theory was that you will be able to put less stress on the threads when threading especially into a softer material, but that was only part one of the trick. Part two was once you had a annealed the copper washers you would then tighten the bolt just about tight then give the bolt a firm whack straight down with a brass hammer and that would “seat” the washer, and you would usually get another quarter turn out of the bolt to finish tightening. I know this comment is hard to follow, but hopefully I didn’t botch up the explanation to bad

Hopefully they are about to get checked. Without a bailout this time. This country is in desperate need for some basic cars.

I do my own service and repairs on my vehicles. I've owned 2 Toyota's bought them new and put over 300,000 miles on them and I changed the oil every 5,000 miles use Mobil 1 and I never replaced the crush washer and had no leaks.

I think the garage striped out my drain plug with an oil change, it kept leaking afterwards. They say they've fixed it, but I'm under the impression of seeing a blob of some sort of sealant there. I try not to think about it, it will keep me up. Let's say ignorance is bliss... Annealing sounds like a great idea for my older cars though.

I am surprised that you didn't mention the washers on Spark Plugs, since you are a collector of Spark Plugs. They are definitely Crush Washers.

I've found that annealing brass shell cases makes them easier to drill and cut when modifying them into ferrules for my projects.

Well I'm only 9 years younger than you John and here in the UK those copper washers used to always come with the new oil filter... Until about 15 years back when they saw an opening to make more profit by selling them separately . Bugger them and their profit , I used a bit of PTFE tape on the sump bolt... Never let me down !

Interesting video, I normally use the copper washers and don't have have an issue, might try annealing next time though. Glad you're getting some sun over there, typical English summer here, 1 week of sun and plenty of rain!

I remember on the job sometimes a plumber had to go around things and they would put sand in the copper pipe heat it red and bend it to the shape he needed…sand kept it from crimping….sometimes you can learn a thing or two even from a plumber…😳…🖖

I just put the drain plug back on without changing the washer, never been a problem. I've had a lock like the Master on the barn door so long the rubber deteriorated and fell off, I replaced it with a rubber something I found in my stockpile that fit last year.

I changed the oil on my Honda for 13 years and over 200,000 miles. Never changed the plug or washer, never had a leak from the plug. Then I sold it! Don't know what that means, or if it would fly today but there you go. Those flags were beautiful!

Ha! I don't know about not having AC, but you would be shocked at the number of people my age (53) that talk about the day they will get rid of their cell phone. Many people my age are FED UP with the listening, tracking, all other BS with these things. The thing is, we have become addicted to them for most of life and job performance. We all say the same thing - when we retire and can do exactly what we want, we will get rid of them, possibly have a flip phone or not. I know many people talk about just going to a wi-fi only tablet.

@@thooks1234 I have never owned and have never used a cell phone of any kind. That policy began while I was still in the workforce. I was completely turned off by the whole idea of walking around all day clutching a phone. As for the TV, I got rid of it back in March 2017. I have not had one moment when I wished I had it again. ... And as for AC, yes it can be tough at times, but what I noticed a long time ago is that you can never really escape the heat and humidity, so I decided to do what our species has been doing for all of the past 3 million (or more) years: Acclimate as best as possible, and just put up with the temporary discomfort. My bank account is quite happy about all of these decisions.

I love One Eyed Jacks and have watched it many times. Another excellent western is 'Hombre' with Paul Newman from the novel by Elmore Leonard. If you have never seen that one you will love it!

Like everything else, parts are designed to fail so you have to pay to replace them. We rebuilt starters and alternators for a few dollars when I was a kid. Now it'll cost you several hundred dollars to replace. I use crush washers routinely to time muzzle devices on rifle barrels.

That is really interesting about annealing the copper crush washers! I never thought about it. It is pretty amazing how soft it makes copper when annealed. Ive dont it making a copper rose from water pipe scraps. The copper work hardens really quick too.

Thanks John, that's really interesting information about the crush/sealing washers, by coincidence I recently bought a mixed pack of 150 copper sealing washers very reasonably on clearance, without really knowing their application, so the guidance is much appreciated, especially the tip about annealing them, I just knew they would come in handy ! 😉 I've only ever drained lawnmower engines and those had the 3/8 square drive recess, but the plugs are like grub screws so avoid the issue caused by having a flanged head engaging with the tank ! When I first started servicing my mowers I read about and obtained one of the old style "dog bone" drain plug wrenches with all the different sizes only to be told subsequently that I could simply use a 3/8 in drive ! I used to go to the Italian barber in my home town back in the late 70s Joe & Tino were real characters !

Thanks for the video, the only place I've ever used a crush washer is on a banjo fitting like what's on a brake system, they usually need 2, one on each side of the fitting.

Washer changes, tomato /tamoto- potato/ patato, inspect the part, if it looks and feels good ( the feeling in the touch of a part will tell more than sight ever can) and it wasn’t causing problems, I’m talking about the oil pan case, before, I reuse it, hand wrench tight, not ratchet/ socket or impact drivers to tighten. IThe short version is “common sense dictates, just my thoughts anyway. Thanks for the video, great show today, BTW, nice tip on the softening of copper washers.

Good show today John ! I learned something. I haven’t changed my oil for 20 years. ( not saying I don’t have it changed regularly which I do ). I never heard of crushed washers and plastic oil pans. Great looking lock! I dealt with the crush washer thing just recently. As you know I bought that old 2004 Grand Marquis in the fall. I did my first Oil change and saw it had a crush washer. Long story short, I finally reached down a teflon washer. Generally, I reuse them with no issues.

Great video Scout, it’s funny, I was watching how excited you get discussing padlocks, because my “thing” is Australian made G clamps and just recently I had a visitor and he was looking around my shop and commented on my clamps. I explained a bit about them and he got interested so I explained a bit more and now I think he’s looking for them too. Sometimes the simplest things can be interesting. I've done more oil changes than I can count on my cars over the years and never used crush washers (and had no leaks) until I bought a 1976 BMW. Copper crush washers were called for on that car. That was my introduction to crush washers and they seemed like a good idea. Never leaked. Plastic oil pans and recommendations to replace drain plugs with each oil change seem over the top to me. Guess I'm a traditionalist.

I never replaced any of them on my Chevy engines and never had a leak. I was told there is plastic internal parts and no bearing. Precision machining and low weight oil makes them work. Whom technology! Thank You

Annealing makes sense although I have never done it. If you have banjo bolts on yoer brake calipers it uses the copper ones and I have reused them. A bit of common sense when you look at it. Is it deformed or off in any way, then use a new one. You get new ones with spark plugs but we reused old ones all the time when a set didn't last forever. No problems. As to what side, it's a crush washer. If it was a problem then it wouldn't seal. Never made a difference. The thing I remember about air conditioners over the door the steady drip of water. It did make you go faster to avoid drips on your head. One thing I do in the heat is stay out of air conditioning if I am going to be out in the heat. I learned that in Arizona, I could handle the heat better if I had to be out in it by not being in air conditioning. I would shut it off in the vehicle before going on a hike or working in the heat. When I first got out there people asked how I could stand the heat. Most of the time it wasn't any worse than stacking hay in a barn. That said Phoenix in July and August was a different story.

Copper crush washers are used on motorcycle brake systems to seal the banjo bolts.

I don't see how it makes a difference what way you fit the crush washer, whichever way you do it both sides are mating against a flat surface.

We just did a brake job and replaced the copper crush washers with bonded rubber steel sealing washers that are reusable and their designed to seal

I'll admit it! On oil pan plugs i reuse them! ;) On the banjo style fittings I use new ones, specifically on brake lines. I've never annealed them before, though it seems to make sense. But then again I've never had one fail, so if im doing it wrong, im ok with it. ;)

Think of those padlocks as time delay devices. Their only job is to slow down a person enough to give time to catch the person. The time delay for that lock is 2-3minutes.

Vert interesting, love the crush washer info. I saw Rich's rant too and was salty about it.

You were correct in saying "I don't know". Oil is thinner to improve fuel efficiency, engines are designed for it, oil plugs need to seal better. Masterlock, lol, Lock Picking Lawyer loves them as well.

I also love the Master 17 and I have collected 3 vintage models over the years. It is no longer produced by Master anymore and the reason I was given by a company representative I spoke with at a hardware show was that the shackle of the lock was so thick that it would not fit many or most gate, toolbox or door hasps. It seems a bit strange to me since I use one of my 17s on my toolbox but that is what I was told. Master apparently was selling fewer each year and think it was cut from their line about 4 or so years ago. It’s a great lock with great proportions as you mentioned. It’s essentially a No. 5 but with 5 pins in the core and a larger shackle.

Wow can't say i have near as much experience of cars as you John. I remember doing the oil change on my 80s cutlass as well as a 94 jeep and they both used a rubber washer and I never changed it. I just checked the rubber for cracks and if it split or broke that would be the only time I replaced it and I don't recall ever having to replace them. My hyundai has the crush washer so that was new for me learning, but they always came with the oil filter, along with new O-rings for the filter cover since they replaced the canister with the cartridge. I do miss the days of simplicity, seems like the kore we go the cheaper things are made yet the cost remains the same if not higher than previously. I miss a transmission dip stick, and the gauges amazing most vehicles don't have battery gauge and others anymore.

Hi John, one of the things about Chesapeake, VA is that the air quality is good. I had to laugh with your Italian imitation. The barber shop picture is almost the same as one that I went to. His name was Patsy. Same AC, same accent. After we moved, I went to Ralph and Augie’s. Same accents but a little more modern chairs. Patsy’s were the same as your picture. Interesting description about the crush washer. We learned about your description in my Jig and Die design class. When punched out, there is 1/3 fracture, 2/3 sheer. The rounded side is the top 1/3 fracture where you start to compress the metal which rounds it off a bit until the metal starts to fracture. Then the die continues to sheer off the rest of the metal and leaves a slight burr from the fracture. Bending a paper clip until it brakes is another example of work hardening. Copper is easy to anneal. To harden steel, it needs carbon ( like in carbon steel). As copper has no carbon it anneals. Metallurgy 101. We actually hardened steel specimens and sectioned it into disks and polished the surface. We then put it under special microscopes with Polaroid cameras and took pictures of the steel grain structure. Different heating temps transformed the steel into different grain structures with different hardness and wear properties. We also took plain steel and heated it with carbonized material around it. The carbon would get infused into the steel and would garden the outside while keeping the core soft for a much less brittle part. Process was called case hardening. Can’t believe I still remember all of this from 45 years ago. Great lick clean up. Yes, hot as hell this weekend, with heat index 105-110. Did a very little out in the yard then came in and watched a movie on Amazon from the 1940’s. It was a WWII submarine classic. Run Silent, Run Deep. Another great video. Best Regards, John

John- Run Silent Run Deep is fantastic- I’ve always been a fan of Burt Lancaster, he had such tremendous screen presence and Clark Gable was also terrific. My favorite Clark Gable film is “It happened one night” That movie still hold up today. When the temps here climb above 90 and humidity is high I like to watch a good movie and enjoy the Air Condish. 😂👍. You’ve got a terrific memory John!

I'm pretty sure that my 1963 Pontiac had a copper or brass washer on the drain plug. I replaced the washer every few changes. They were probably less than 10 cents in those days. Good Luck, Rick

Saw my first crush washer (copper) when I was changing the oil on a Jeep Cherokee I bought back in 1991 and I was like, what the heck? Another thing to have on hand when working on cars and trucks. But I haven't encountered a leaky pan plug since that time either. Speaking of 'One Eyed Jacks,' it's a fine western made even finer by the scene-stealing presence of none other than the legendary character actor Timothy Carey from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. A certifiable wacko but what a great character actor!

In addition to sealing a crush washer sometimes acts like a lock washer and will keep a bolt from vibrating loose. Evidence of this is the crush washer on the flash hider on the muzzle of a rifle.

I had a Peugeot 505 that used the copper washer on the oil drain plug. I used the same washer the whole time I owned the car, never had a problem with leaking.

I use copper crush gaskets for the oil screen on a Continental IO-470 engine. MS 35769-48 or AN 900-28. It is an annular copper-asbestos gaskets (crush washers) are suitable for temperatures up to 500 F. and pressures up to 200 PSI. Ring width is 1/8"; thickness is 3/32.

I've using the same aluminum crush washer on my lawnmower for 18 years ... no problem.

In reference to the crush washers, most modern oil pans made within the last 20 years, but before these crazy crush washers, had a rubber O-ring. The O-ring prevented leaks and made it unnecessary to use an impact wrench, as many of these oil places do, to tighten the drain plug. Isn’t it funny that with all of our modern technology and all of the innovations, we’re still struggling with leaking oil pans.

Years ago I was racing to my sister’s wedding and I punctured my oil pan on my ‘68 Cougar. I removed the pan, had it brazed from the inside and slowed down. 😂👍

We anneal aircraft sparkplugs every time we remove them, which is often compared to all other machines. I have seen new ones leak, but never annealed ones. You can tell by the pretty purple color.

Manufactures recommending changing the oil plug every time you change your is crazy. If you leave it up to the manufacture they will soon be recommending you change your vehicle with every oil change.

I have never replaced the washer on an oil drain plug. The only thing I ever replace the washer on is brake caliper hoses.

I usually buy 4 filters from my Toyota dealer. 2 for my Avalon and 2 for my daughter’s Camry. The parts guy throws in the washers gratis

I always reuse my washer and tight is tight if your lefthanded use your right hand to tight it and vice versa never have any problems. Nowadays everyone is specialised even if they did see it in life.😂😊

You absolutely can not reuse a crush washer. It will leak every time...... Unless you don't have a new one, you can reuse the old one, and it'll be fine🤪 Can't argue with that. Twenty years ago I found a mechanic and saw him torque my lug nuts on my car, I was impressed and said I never seen a mechanic do that! Fast forward two years he doesn’t do it either anymore! 😂👍

On my semi tractor the oil pan is also plastic got cracked a few times that's why when I bought my pickup I take to the dealership to change oil they break it they bought it plus the cost is about the same if I did it myself

Scoutcrafter!!!! Long time no talk. My wife and I still watch every single video... Let me knock you over the head and put a knot on that noggin for using "aftermarket" Toyota oil plug crush washers!!! LOL We have three Toyotas in the driveway and I do ALL the work on them. One of my biggest fears in life now is having to buy a new(er) vehicle. I am of the opinion anything after 2015 is pure garbage, even from Toyota. I try my best to use Toyota OEM parts for everything. Crush washers (on the oil pan, I do use aftermarket crush washers on the transmission plugs and differential plugs.... ), I use OEM oil filters and like I said, I try to use OEM parts for anything of significance. Your collection of crush washers floored me! I have a large pack them myself, but I also have three vehicles, two are 4WD, and the differentials take about 5 different kinds of washers! One plug gets the large copper washer, two get this kind, one this, etc. I remember having to buy a large crush washer for the Honda V6 transmission fill plug - I think Honda used to get $6 EACH. SIX DOLLARS! I started re-filling through the dipstick tube. Anyway, just had to chime in for once. Keep up the great videos. One of these days I am going to make it up there for a tool meet!

I once worked with a guy that had a amazing looking hammer titanium with a unique grip. He stacked copper crush washers then leather over and over. I asked him where he got the idea and he said a old man and his easwing hammer that was repaired over the years with penny's and leather. Maybe one day with arealled crush washers I'll try it or you?

oil pan washers - make your own from cardboard (cheerios box). Laugh at the dealership price and worries about orientation. a simple gasket punch helps.

Question: Nothing to do with this video. With your 50/50 mix of acetone and ATM fluid, do you use a plastic spray bottle. If so have you had trouble with the acetone melting the plastic bottle? Also what is the other mix you have for rust prevention. Sorry for putting this in the comment section but I didn’t know how to contact you any other way. Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob! The only thing you have to make sure is you use a chemical resistant spray bottle- I think it’s Polyurethane. Also only fill the bottle half way.
