This scene shows that deep down inside no matter howw much bad shit that Garfield did to those students. He only wanted to help them overall , he wasn't a killer or even a bad person at all he just gpt sick and tired of the evil they were bringing to peoples lives. Even in the end he died to show Caesar that he cared about him and he would take his own life instead of them ruining there's. Great movie

very underrated movie...the critics didn't understand the point at all... garfield isn't really that complicated. In a weird way it reminds me of the movie FALLING DOWN which oddly enough was received well unlike 187...people related to michael douglas's character but no one can relate to teachers because most lack empathy...u have a regular man who always tries to do the right thing to try to reach his students. He has morality, he is protective of others, thoughtful, and committed to his job which he believes in its his life until he is attacked by his student which made an attempt on his life for something so mundane...the student blames garfield instead of acknowledging the real reason and that is he failed at his class. Garfield has chronic pain, asthma and nerve damage which he struggles with as well as PTSD. When he kills benny he was simply eliminating the threat...he saw benny as his attacker and a lost cause. Garfield knows he is on his own and no one even helped him the first time he nearly lost his life so he views it the way a solider would in times of war: eliminate the threat. Benny stood in the way of him helping the others and was a risk to his co worker and also himself. You have this sweet, thoughtful guy who dog sits and does favours for his co worker/friend and then u see this other side to him where he does extreme things similar to having a psychotic break as he loses control over his class and the situation... and the stress alone can explain this but he has a more sociopathic reaction to these threats but he actually thought there was hope for cesar when he expresses genuine happiness when he put the fear of god into him "he actually did his homework" but he keeps losing control of the situation understimating pride, ego, and revenge. Garfield was already broken when he gets to the school and the abuses and defiance kept pushing him into a corner... he lacked his "passion" and is always met with this disrespect and hatred and racism from these students no matter what he does. The only real person he reaches is the teenage girl. And even she mentions puric victory because thats what became of garfield and in a way he was subconsciously talking about the ending to his life...his own failures. He doesn't even really blame gang violence he blames himself for not being able to gain their trust or establish authority over them. Even the severed finger part that was him establishing his dominance over cesar but without hurting him too seriously. This movie explores the wolf theory rather well "we have 2 wolves inside of us the moral decent one then theres the savage one and which ever one u feed more wins" underrated movie... it had guts without being too over the top. I could see this as really happening because its a moral issue, survival issue, and mental health issue.

Childress is the typical burnt out who’s become so jaded by the system and really doesn’t care about the students or teaching anymore and just trying to stay on for a little while longer to retire with a good pension.

This scene reminds me of Falling Down at the Surplus Store. This time a black man with white shirt and tie and glasses. Both sick characters (John Heard in this scene and Frederic Forrest the Nazi) go off on rants showing off their weapons to their "supposed friends"

Wow, well noticed! And they also say almost the same lines.. that they are not the same. D-Fens in Falling Down said "we're not the same" to the nazi and Garfield says "you probably think we're alike, we're not".

This is a classic John Heard scene, where he had this acting style of seeming like a loveable and friendly guy and mildly psychotic at the same time. I love how they make this scene uncomfortable by just letting heard talk and be creepy while sam jackson just looks at him. Great tension.
