One day in Königsberg

Königsberg was the historic German and Prussian name of the city that is now Kaliningrad, Russia.
A Baltic port city, it successively became the capital of the State of the Teutonic Order, the Duchy of Prussia and the provinces of East Prussia and Prussia.
Königsberg was the easternmost large city in Germany until World War II.
It is now the capital of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, an exclave bordered in the north by Lithuania and in the south by Poland.

My grandfather came from that city, I really dream of visiting one day. I read about the city and the region a lot and it would be so cool to really be there one day. I like the East, the Baltics and Russia in general culture- and naturewise. The architecture also looks so intersting with all the Prussian/ German elements around, must be such an interesting blend overall.

The baltics does not share the culture of Russia. They have their own culture, but it is being undermined and surpressed by russian and soviet culture , which can hardly be called culture. More like the systemisation of opression.

Well when the entire city is destroyed and tens of thousands of people are in dire need of housing, any building would do, especially the cheap and easy to construct Soviet apartments. It’s not like Soviet architecture is ugly, there are lots of very beautiful buildings in Moscow built by the USSR. And when referring to the Soviet culture, I wouldn’t call it primitive, as you know it’s the Germans who attacked first, and if they didn’t do that the “sophisticated” culture wouldn’t be replaced

Devastating for Königsberg was the terrorist act of two night air raids by British aircraft. On the night of August 26-27, 1944, about 200 aircraft bombed the northern part of the city; two nights later, 600 aircraft destroyed the entire city center. Residential streets, shops, warehouses formed a continuous sea of , in which about 4,200 people died.

@Felix-bj1pe it's now called Kalingrad as for the bombing back in 1944 during ww2 when the city was called Konigsberg well that is what happens when a country backs a madman like Adolf Hitler and the nazis. The Germans can complain all they like about the allies bombing them heavily around nearly eighty years ago if the German people hadn't backed Hitler and the nazis then invaded the whole of Europe including the former Soviet Union and some of the decendents of Germans who once lived in what used to be east Prussia and Silesia can't complain about the ethnic cleansing that the Russian's did between 1945 to around 1948 after what nazi Germany did to millions of people across Europe, certain Germans on the far right need to accept that the former areas of East Prussia and Silesia are now inhabited by poles and the city once called Konigsberg is now inhabited by Russian's and is called Kalingrad it ain't going to change the same with former areas of the sudatenland in the Czech Republic they are Czech areas.

The city was devastated by the British raid of September 1944 and then the Russians destroyed what was left. The brutal Soviet rebuild ignored the historical layout of the city and replaced the destroyed historical buildings with communist monstrosities. The western allies did not expect Stalin to annex the Koenigsberg area in 1945, thinking that it would be given to Poland, but in reality East Prussia had been a target of Russia since the 18th century. The opportunity of gaining an ice-free port in the Baltic was too good to miss.

The Russians did not expect that the British elites and American capital would help Hitler grow, and the whole of Europe would help him destroy Russia. Therefore, the capture of Konigsberg is a well-deserved trophy, for which the opinion of the allies is not required.
