I grew up in the Valley. We used to go to Zapata Falls before many people knew to go there. We used to ride our horses down the road to a cabin that someone we knew own to have lunch. It had old wanted posters on the wall and was sooo cool. You used to be able to find arrow heads at the dunes. The river flows in “waves” due to the build of sand. There is an old gold mine on down that road that caved in just after the miners were paid in gold. There is also an old ghost town (or used to be). Just like the cabin, people probably messed it up. Unfortunately the cabin was burned down.

Jeanie Marie: You & your husband(?) hit this one out-of-the-park! (pun intended 🤣)...This is an area of Colorado that during my days of living in Denver & Colo Spgs, I unfortunately missed visiting. The closest I ever got was Gunnison & Pueblo (not really so close to the Great Sand Dunes). The scenery was spectacular, the Mexican food looked DEELISH & the boutique ice cream worth every calorie!🤗 Thank you both so much for the wonderful journey!👍👏 Stay safe out there in this crazy world and considering the ever-increasing stratospheric price of gas these days, I hope you can afford to keep bringing us, your appreciative fans, these fabulous travelogues. God bless🙏

Oh the dunes are so grand! We stopped their to try out sledding down them with the kids. So windy it hurt to have the sand pelt us. Wish we knew about the waterfalls nearby and the hot springs! Then we stayed in Alamosa for the night before going to AZ.

I made the mistake of going here in a high wind warning and it was AWFUL. Was literally like walking in a sand storm. I guess it basically was a sandstorm lol. Total user error though. Zapata Falls is amazing though!

I just got back from the sand dunes. We went on a Tuesday, and it wasn't nearly that busy. but it was kinda chilly. wish I knew about the Mexican resturant in Alamosa, because we drove to Pueblo to get Mexican on the way back to Denver. BTW, the fried egg on the enchiladas is a Colorado thing.

Have you compared the path differences from DENVER to TAOS vis I-25 south, vs GOLDEN TO TAOS, via Hwy 285 (which contains Sand Dunes stops)? Any reason to select I-25 path?

You missed telling of how the dunes formed and the stories of the creek or river that flows on the Southside of the dunes and what they do. The sand is picked up from the Rio Grande river which flows about 50 miles west of the dunes. The wind blows it in but it's too heavy to go over the mountains behind them and it settles on the dunes. The creek picks up same d in its flow ANF actually carries it back to the Rio Grande. A continuous cycle of the same sand coming and going back. You also never mentioned the name of the mountain range that traps the sand. I'll let you do some research to find the name. 😉
