13.03.2024 comment: Since this kit came out, both Airfix and Eduard have added their own 1/48th P-51D kits. I have mu;ltiple of both of those and this kit and 2x Tamiya as well as the older Monogram/Revell P-51D. In order of Preference and Accuracy my opinion is as follows: 1st (by a short distance) Eduard. 2nd (Due to extra flexibility of standard options) is Airfix. 3rd Meng with Tamiya a little behind in 4th (Due to the inaccurate Wheel bays). All P-51-D kits under Tamiya 4th have badly inaccurate Whell bays. Revell Monogram is 5th andwith ALL other 1/48th P-51D kits behind those. (Fujimi, Testors, Hasegawa & Italeri et al....) Why is Airfix #2?: well, if you buy their early Mustang ( kit A05138) you get ALL the tail options : (Filletless early, Early filleted (Field fitted aka "Swayback) and Standard Factory fit fillet. So that kit ypou can build as about 85% of all D Mustangs. (with AM markings.) Kit A055137, the P-51D/K can be built as most very late production Mustangs with alternative propellers to the HS Cuffed type. and their F-51D kit matches that and has 8 HVAR Rockets! To get the same options from the Eduard kit you need to get several boxings with those specific Where I am, in NZ, the Eduard boxing retails between 85 and 100 dollars and the Weekend edition about $675 NZ. The Airfix boxings are currently between 55 and 60 $NZ,. (Althouigh Eduarddo give you multiple propellers and standard fuel tank options , the other changes (like rockets and VLR gear are are specific to the Boxing you buy.) Eduard does sell VLR tanks which youi can adapt to fit the Airfix kit. The Airfix does take a lot of care and test fitting to make and take especial care making the Belly Radiator and intake. ANY small error here will causes the fuselage halve to be ill-fitting (like a 1mm Gap top and Bottom- BE 1000% sure the Front radiator piece fits ABSOLUTELY FLUSH in the mount. If it doesn't then trim it until it does - Do not worry, the whole bottom 1/3 of that radiator will be completly hidden by the Oil Cooler in front of it when assembled.)

It's also worth noting that airfix have a new 1/48 P-51d on the way also. Their newer kits have been very impressive so it should be a good one...

You can cut the locator pins at an angle, and then pop them apart easily with a guitar pick.

Looks like a good kit to try different techniques - if you mess it up redo it make this your experimental model and maybe you will be amazed!

Disclaimer, Phil's speedy job is typically a lot better than some modelers (speaking of mine) very long and arduous weathering. :P

What do you gain by not using glue? The detail is sophisticated enough to appeal to more experienced modellers. The kit requires painting which in my opinion requires far more skill that gluing parts together, as you've pointed out you need too be able to clean up the parts correctly to get them to fit properly anyway. Bandai kits use coloured plastic so that can be built presentably without painting. Secondly the majority of Bandai kits are highly articulated Gundpla where if gluing was required would be very tricky to not cement joints together, therefore having a snapfit is almost a requirement of the genre. I'm just not sure who this kit is for?

Even though it's snap together I'd still use Cyanoacrylate to make sure they stay together

Agreed, but it does show that there may be a shifting trend. Time will tell. Of course I have no doubt that Bandai holds many many patents on their methods and processes for creating kits. So I don't expect anyone to be doing what Bandai does for some time.

The Tamiya 1/48 kit has difficult seams all over, one of the worst props ever offered, and a narrow nose top that is obvious when you know about it. It also wants badly to build the wings too flat with the cockpit in place... No way you can even compare the seamless Meng to the most overrated kit of all time, especially given the metal scheme of P-51Ds, and even more when considering beginners.
