One Big Unpopular Opinion - DmC: Devil May Cry Retrospective & Review

Ойындар

Surrounded by controversy and despised by many, DmC: Devil May Cry is a very divisive game. In this retrospective and review, I speak out on behalf of the countless fans who genuinely love this game, and give my reasons why this game is deserving of praise.
DmC: Devil May Cry is a reboot from Capcom's popular Devil May Cry series. The game features the series' signature combat mechanics, but deviates from the Japanese style of storytelling, in favour of a more westernized approach. This is one reason why there was a significant amount of backlash from some of the DMC community.
I take a look at everything this game has to offer (not the DLC) and judge it on it's own merits, as well as in comparison to the rest of the games in the Devil May Cry series.

I made this review for 2 reasons. First, I wanted to. And second, to give an argument against the countless negative reviews for DmC: Devil May Cry. There's still so much I could say about this cracking game! But alas, there's only so much I can hold the average viewer's butt in their seats. I think the point comes across well enough. I wanted to speak out on behalf of so many comments on KZread that praise this game. I feel, despite this video's title, that loving this game isn't going to be as unpopular as time goes on. I hope you enjoyed this presentation. Please give the video a Thumbs Up if you did, and Subscribe! Check out my other videos. I upload all kinds of content! See you all soon.

I find it comforting to be amongst DmC fans and level-headed critics. People keep saying that it should be its own title and shouldn't share DMC but I see it being comparable with Final Fantasy with their standalone installment each time. Granted, Final Fantasy are their own standalone installments. So if (and it's a big _if_) they do a sequel, DmC and DMC are standalone installments of the entire Devil May Cry franchise. Rock on 😎

if DmC was called literally anything else, like Nephilim or even DMC: Black, and was treated like a spin-off series rather than reboot i guarantee you people wouldn’t have been so harsh on the game. DmC is great through-and-through, it’s a shame we’ll never see the end of the trilogy.

I thoroughly enjoyed switching between my weapons (going from Rebellion to Osiris to Eryx) and putting them together to form long combos that end with that flashy slow mow. It’s badass and with the metal behind it you feel like a true devil-hunter lol. I wish the characters had more emotional depth but with the clashing viewpoints of Ninja Theory and Capcom they couldn’t really make the game theirs (if that makes any sense) which led to the story not being god-tier. If the story had some more moments (cutscene wise) it would give Dante, Vergil, and Kat more of a connection leading to Dante’s maturity at the end of the game. Thank you for reading this far lmao have a good day

Thank you 😊 I love this game, flaws and all!! Story: I was actually disappointed. Ninja Theory has great story telling points and showed so much in their current Senua game! I have a feeling Capcom's higher ups intervened too much and had little faith on both their own team and on NT. And that's sad. I love the main two characters, Dante and Kat, but I wished there were more emotional moments though. I can see there's a lot of baggage between these two, yet there's never any progression (not into romance, but I see them as kindred spirits). I guess it was supposed to be for a sequel, but we know there may never be 👀 Gameplay: it just works! I had finished it at the hardest and I understand it's also for newcomers. I missed the taunting though. Music/Art: Chef's kiss 😘 just stellar! I don't understand how there aren't any metal/rock fans to this game that NEEDS a throbbing sound to pump us up!! People disliked DMC5 Subhuman, a theme for Dante, but it fits sooo well for him! The musicians clearly took notes from Combichrist and I feel people just deny it, didn't want to be associated with the reboot. And Noisia!! They made most of the ambient sounds that, if you told them it can be for Silent Hill or perhaps another industrial horror game, they'd be none the wiser. But it's for DmC and it works! I especially love Kat's Theme. What a somber sound, reflective of her character but also the deeply wounded themes amongst the characters! Great video and a perspective about what the heck is Capcom on about these days. I have to say, I haven't seen much original titles on them, only sequels. It's not bad but how do we maintain a long series fresh? So sorry and TLDR, just stumbled upon the channel when you commented on one of the DmC cutscenes videos!

I used to be very upset with Spider-Man 4 getting cancelled and rebooted but after giving TASM1 a chance, I really enjoyed the new suit and Andrew's performance that I had watched the deleted scenes and played the tie-in game. As for DmC, I was very curious why a game would get so much hate when I hated DMC4 for making Nero who was very unlikeable to me in terms of personality and gameplay, so I tried the reboot and I enjoyed that too. DmC Dante was more grounded and relatable compared to Nero and comparing him with mainline Dante would seem unfair imo and managed to find purpose and responsibility within Kat, a human who wasn't as useless as Kyrie and wasn't made for decorated fanservice. DMC3 had a bit of anime vibes but 4 and 5 went too far and turned it into a gimmicky shonen anime that targeted a younger demographic, unfortunately. That's Capcom for you.

Also Capcom has history of doing spinoff and redirection. Their plan was to run both. They literally doing this with Resident Evil where the new ones are first person while the other is over the shoulder.. This game also show a younger Dante but got push up in age. The problem is they should had kept the casual plans but made it harder. They should had kept the original plans. They should had went for thirty missions instead due to the fact they combine all the manga and games into this reboot.

It was my first and my favorite DMC game. the gameplay's fast pace was a lot more enjoyable to me than the likes of DMC3, 4 or 1. and even considering the base game's flaws, such as no lock on and color coded enemies, the gameplay still kicks a lot of ass. as for the story, i thought it was enjoyable as long as you don't take it seriously which you shouldn't, its devil may cry lol. the aesthetics and world building of the game was fantastic as much as it strayed forward from the original series, it had a lot of potential. i'm sure if capcom didn't force ninja theory that much we would have gotten a way better story than what was delivered (the concept arts leaned heavily towards the rebellious and psychology aspects of dante. the aesthetics were like the early 30/40's of Europe while at the same time it was modern. the character designs resembled the og counterparts while also staying different. like a samurai look for vergil and a detective look for dante) the music really got me into the metal genre and i still listen to it from time to time. it was a really good starting point to get into the franchise and i hope someday we get a multiverse/crossover type of game between the two series or probably a sequel. i really enjoyed your video and your point of view. it was a breath of fresh air.

I genuinely enjoy the dialogue because the game is over the top vulgar and grotesque and is fully aware of that. While the game doesnt take itself too seriously, it is able to pull off serious moments when they need to happen while still maintaining the humorous charm the game carried along with it the entire way. Comparing it to DMC 5, I feel that its edgy for the sake of being edgy while not poking fun at itself the way DmC did. Just my take on it.

In terms of characters, the reboot eats 5 and it's not even close. Dante and Nero are fine, but V is just lame, Vergil is Vergil, he has not changed or evolved at all, and the other 3, Nico is just stupid, and makes me want to cut her in half with Red Queen every time she opens her mouth, Trish has like 2 lines in the whole game, and Lady is at best, as good as Quiet was in MGS5, if you know that game. I know this is weird, but DmC: Dmc has my favorite control of Dante, especially combat. I like it much more than even the latest release DmC 5. I guess this has to do with that this was my first Dmc game. Combos are more free flow, and changing weapons mid-combo is so easy and satisfying to do. When I went back and play other older Dmc game, I found them extremely clunky. Even in Dmc 5, I rarely switch weapons during my multiple play through, because the control scheme doesn't really encourage doing so, besides you also don't really need to. Technically you can do it, but it feel so weird to pull off.

Hey Elisti Agel, No, I agree 100%. I've played most DmC games and found DmC to be the most flexible in terms of control and movement, just as you say. I think DmC V caters more to the proper die hard/hardcore of fans, which is fine of course. But even with that being said, it wouldn't be where it is without the reboot. Thanks for commenting, and I hope you enjoyed the video 🙃✌

Got the game couple of days ago and I was surprised by how pleasant my experience was. My first game in the series was 3 and I loved it despite me being 12 at the time and playing in easy mode, later when I turned 15 a couple of months ago I got 5 and it was as good as everyone said it was but not as good as 3. So now I was scared since I wanted to try it out since I first heard about it but when I got it...holy hell it's underrated! It has its fair share of problems and the story was...well, I'm not going to say it's worst than 2 but it ain't winning any awards but the gameplay surprised me, took getting used but it's fast, it's fluid, and it feels great! The animations especially with Dante are something I enjoy due to it shows how inexperienced he is. He stumbles after putting weight into his attacks, nearly falling after doing Streak, I love it! The music, my favorite part of this game is fucking amazing! Introduced me to Combichrist and Noisia one of the best soundtracks in the series. (second going to 5, first going to 3.) The environment is like something out of an acid trip, seriously I can't get over how nice no GORGEOUS they look. Especially in the area, Dante gets Ophion. The dialogue is (in my opinion) so bad it's amazing like Holy hell the writers must've gotten a raise for how amazing the writing is. It's bad yet it fits with the personality of the game, especially with Dante. With each line it makes me howl like a hyena but some lines make me happy, like Dante and Vergin's interactions. They act like brothers albeit on the final mission while a fun fight Vergin's change to being evil felt shoved in like it they couldn't think of anything else. My real negatives are, that the concepts being wasted originally Dante was going to have both a Devil and Angel trigger presumably via the same way you activate Devil and Angel mode that would've made Dante's Devil trigger interesting to me. The face models need to be sculpted like sculpted especially Vergin's. Kat didn't do anything here, compared to Lady and Trish to me she just felt like a background character waiting for Dante. Sparda wasn't who he was, instead of being the legendary black knight who sealed hell, he's just a demon who fell in love with an angel with no cool moments, no parts of his story even being revealed. And finally, Vergin himself. While Dante was able to grow on me throughout the game Vergin made me distance him. Instead of being the cool and collected badass, he was in the other games, here he jumps to conclusions, makes irrational decisions, and trys to justify his actions. I'm not saying Vergil is honorable but he knew what he was doing and he didn't care that's what made his character appeal to me, he didn't care about honor, he wanted power and he was going to have it. Vergin quite literally listens to a figment of his imagination kinda (Vergil's Downfall) and then jumps to conclusions stating that Eva loved Dante more than him while taunting her with his amulet taken from Dante's hollow self. I give a solid 7.5/10 as its own game, as a DMC game 5/10.

The fact that DMC 5 took some ideas from this game speaks volumes about how influential it was. The narrator for the style rank system, the name cards when enemies are introduced, the slow mo when killing the last enemy. There are many flourishes the DMC 5 devs implemented in their latest entry that were first introduced in DmC Devil May Cry. Rightly so, since these additions were some of the best things about DmC. Thing is, DmC still does it better when it comes to the S-SSS style voice. You can't deny how badass SAVAGE sounded, or rewarding hearing SENSATIONAL was. My biggest gripe however was the absence of taunts! With how good the animations are in DmC, can you imagine how good the taunts would have been.

I do enjoy this game wish it didn't focus so hard on being a gritty reboot, story wise rating i give it a 3.5 out of 5. I like how this vergil is more open about his trauma and I like how in the dlc it looked like he was becoming more like his or vergil would have been cool to see his story progression open to closed off. While on vergil went from blinded by trauma to having his eyes opened. I didn't like this version of dante felt like they focused way to hard on making him the exact opposite of what he was and what every bit of edgy cinema. Thought was cool but I liked some things about him but it was mostly a nope from me maybe he would have been better in the sequels.

A positive DmC review? No wonder this one's just got under 500 likes. ^^ No, seriously, this is a fair review. I liked DMC1 when it came out (despite the most nightmarish enemy of the whole franchise: the camera), I hated DMC2 (because it sucked balls), DMC3 seemed to go in the right direction but turned out to be too damn hard for a filthy casual like me, and DMC4 was just... meh and didn't appeal to me. What they all had in common was a metric shit ton of cringe. OG Dante was such a cardboard cutout juvenile power fantasy and got showered with love by the fandom, but DmC's cringy, angsty Dante was considered sacrilege? I vastly prefer the western take on the mythology, I love the art design, I like the level design (and I hate the design of the normal enemies, but hey, there's always something), I like the accessability. Since the first one, DMC hasn't worked for me, but this one did in spades. It's perfectly okay for reviewers to say the original series appeals more to their personal tastes, but DmC's been done dirty.

The amount of people who dismiss the story in this game because they are used to being spoon fed the story arch half way through every game with character ques. I don't think they understand that this story is being told completely from the perspective of Dante himself. So the game doesn't give you any hints as to which direction it is really going until Dante himself actually arrives there. You actually have to play through the game to get the full story instead of figuring it out long before the story reaches that conclusion itself. And it forces you to actually pay attention to the story or you wont understand what is happening.

I feel like the main reason why people really hated this game is that it represented an existential threat to the old dmc games. Imo, knowing capcom's weird thinking of making their games more western back then, if the game was popular enough, it would have replaced the mainline series. I feel like people would have been way less angry if both series could have just coexisted. Definitely the most polarizing game in the series. It's not my favourite one, because the colour coded enemies, lack of a lock on and being 30 fps really soured things for me. And while yes, the definitive edition fixed those, for me the damage was already done. The lack of taunting and the much smaller move list also hurt it for me. Saying that though, I still had plenty of fun with game. Aquila is my favourite among the weapons in the game. It has a spin to win and those are always fun. Plus the nightclub level was bonkers and by far the best level in the game in my opinion. Another plus was being able to try out a new move before you bought it and having that carry over into 5 was by far the best thing that 5 took from the reboot. As for the characters and writing, I wasn't really a fan. There were some parts that got a slight chuckle out of me, but those were few and far between. Plus, Dante's snarkyness felt a little too forced at times. I don't really have any examples of what I mean by that since I haven't played it in years. As for Vergil, I really didn't like him. He seemed, I dunno, whiney at times. He didn't have that same intimidating presence that OG Vergil has. Turning Mundus into an evil business man was pretty funny though and Bob Barbas had some great interactions with Dante in the boss fight. As for Kat though, I have zero opinion or her. She was honestly pretty forgettable to me. So in conclusion, while I had a lot fun with DmC, I am so happy the OG DMC is back. I missed my wacky woohoo pizza man. And while I wouldn't be against a sequel to the reboot, I would much rather Capcom remade Devil May Cry 2 so they can fix all of the issues with it and give the combat system of 3, 4 and 5.

Thus is my take I think Ninja theory made the best DMC combat system ever even comparing the newest one it is still the best to me it's so free it's the only way to explain it I don't talk about the story because that is subjective subject so I won't mention it But the characters wise Dante is my favourite character ever and I love him and I didn't hate this version of him I just thought it was a fun new take on him like an asshole version and I liked it this comes from a Huge Dante fan

Actually yeah, structurally too, DMC 3 only got most of us hoked because of visuals and the hammy acting. But like that's it. DMC 3 Dante's flair is all that but if we really scrutinize the roots of part 3 I question why he's perpetually just an edgy, swaggering idiot. Reboot Dante on the other hand is truly a microcosm of what punk supposedly looks like. Personally he was edited down to what he is now in DmC. And I agree with the OP video because there's evidence to how multifaceted he is, all across the entire game: he's a hardened young man with no direction and refuses help, simply because he is a victim of such a cruel circumstance. And despite this hardened exterior he actually cracks and lets help in. His motivation at first was out of vengeance for his family. But through Kat and even through his mother's spirit Eva, he is given a larger picture of just how bad it is. And his hidden potential for heroism, held back because of his trauma and bitterness, rises to the occasion. And personally, I don't need any other bigger motivation from this version of Dante, other than the fact, he's actually kind.

@@audrey9able Go back and watch like the last 3rd of dmcs story especially the scenes with lady. Dante and reboot Dante have the same idea of found purpose greater then themselves and becoming more heroic they just go about it in slightly different ways… case in point the cutscene where Lady gives Dante Kalina Ann bears a strong resemblance to DmCs ending dialogue from reboot Dante and mission 2 from the reboot

@@MILDMONSTER1234 I think I was unable to clarify but yes they have similarities. But I am very critical at part 3 however, with its overall structure of its narrative. And it took too long for part 3 Dante to reveal his best qualities. It wasn't so for the reboot version of Dante. He has his major shift at the end of just Chapter 2. And then another with Kat on that traveling scene en route to Vergil. Granted DMC 3 only has 4 major characters interacting with one another. It's a great achievement that the production team for part 3 got the main actors to contribute heavily on the plot too. Meanwhile the reboot version has 3 main characters, plus supporting characters and main villains that managed to interact with Dante and even Vergil, allowing for them to show their colors against one another.

Nobody says this is a bad game as far as I know. The thing is that it barely at all plays like the original series. The gameplay is very good, yeah, but it can't replace what came before, and I think that's largely why people were upset. Imagine if a DMC6 came out and suddenly Dante played like Bayonetta. Bayo is great, but she doesn't scratch the same itch, not by a long shot. If DmC had instead just been a completely new franchise, without the initial proposition of scrapping what came before (while the developers also constantly seemed to have went on about how much better their game was) it would have much more easily established itself as something that people embrace with open arms. It'd likely have a sequel by now as well already

Maybe this is the better direction imo than even with dmc 5 because it just felt like a long convoluted shonen lite mess with pretty graphics and one memorable song. The combat really was just its best feature

I don’t agree about the part of how reboot Dante is more fleshed out than classic Dante. He goes through a similar arc in 3 which is considered to have the best story of the games(it’s debated on if 3 or 5 have the best stories by the fandom) m and I’m assuming you’re leaving out 5 because you said “previous titles”.

  • @audrey9able

I'll be the most critical here. While I love DmC, it is by no means a really great story. However, I am very critical of the original's crafted story as well. If you're relying on the fandom on their input about how well crafted this entire franchise's storytelling is, that's a bit disappointing. Part 3's Dante's likeability only hinges on how cool he moves around. But he's a dickhead. Only on the finale did we see more potential about who he is as a person. But DMC refuses to go that deep. And it seems this "flavor" of Dante was the one that overstayed its presence up to 5. Almost no growth whatsoever. But at least he has his twin brother back, or whatever they call their complicated sibling rivalry is. There is absolutely some deep potential in the original series for something a bit life changing, even if they want to stick to the fast food cheese flavor of it all. But I sort of saw it coming. Personally was hinging on V's character to further Vergil's own inner demons. And affect Nero. I thought the story would go a little longer actually. So Nero can have a more proper Heroic Journey where his values finally weighs down on Vergil's. But I guess one final boss with his odd father was enough to slap some sense into Vergil and suddenly, they just want to clean the streets of demon infestations. Sure, I got what's coming. DMC is pure fanservice for the masculine ego and wetting appetites for the female and queer fans. That's nice, I guess. Pick your favorite. But a favorite doesn't mean it has quality. I mean, I have a favorite fast food. But it's not quality food.

Allow me to share something with you all. This game was my first DMC game, and this is the game that introduced me to the main series. I bought this game in December 2021. From the moment I first played it, I was deeply enamored. I loved every aspect of it. The gameplay, the graphics, the level design, the music, and even the story. However, as I started to dig deeper into this game, I discovered the massive hatred on it. After learning all the bad feedback on this game, and after watching some gameplays of the main series for comparison, that's when I started to hate this game. At that point, I decided to buy and embrace the main series, challenging myself to play through each installment to cleanse myself of the stigma associated with being a DmC fan. I conditioned myself to despise it to avoid judgement from those people who hate this game. To this day, I find myself revisiting the main series, particularly enjoying DMC4 and DMC5, even though I still struggle to master them. I replay them solely to experience the rich narratives, stunning graphics, and engaging gameplay. Despite all this, I steadfastly refuse to play DmC again. In my view, playing this game again feels like a big sin or a major transgression against the main series and all the fans of the OG games. I still harbor a strong dislike for it, constantly reinforcing this sentiment, even though I can't bring myself to uninstall it from my PC for some reason. I can't even delete the GMVs (Gaming Music Videos) that I did for it before I discovered the hate. Gladly, it feels like I am now in the right place after abandoning that reboot and staying in the boat of the main series. So even though I cannot delete it from my collection, I know I have a protection against it to never touch it again.

Very few people criticize this game for the gameplay. It's criticized: 1) Because of Ninja Theory's mockery and insults of the original series and fanbase Remember everyone, Step 1 of rebooting a beloved series is to NOT PISS THE FANS OFF, step 2 is NOT TO INSULT THE ORIGINAL SERIES. Does that justify some of the overly negative fan reactions at the start? No. But god, did Ninja Theory react badly... awfully. This did them absolutely 0 favours. 2) Because of its god awful story and characterisation I will give Ninja Theory some credit - they generally make games with great stories, and I suspect Capcom pushed them a lot on this one. I will also say, again, that some fans were real shits too, which may have not helped in this regard. Look at even the 2010 trailer, and the atmosphere and characteristics is different to the actual game. A slightly unstable, tortured, and weird Dante could've worked, rather than the just plain rude one in the actual game. Again, I think Ninja Theory reacted badly to the negative reaction, should've stuck to its guns as much as possible, delivered its original vision, and not insulted the fanbase, and especially the original series.
