Once Upon a December | Animatic

Фильм және анимация

A twist on the tale of Odette, Odile, and Baron Von Rothbart.
Yes, I do realize it's been a while since my last upload, please forgive me! I actually started and scrapped two other animatics about halfway through finishing them; for some reason, my heart just wasn't in it.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

Hello🐺🤗! I am such a huge fan of your work😉🐺. From one artist/KZread member to another, how do you do this stuff😯🐺? Whenever I see this stuff: it just blows my mind to how people can do this😊🐺! I've always wanted to share my art with others and I would love to have upload at least one thing in my KZread lifetime🐺😥. I will take any and all advice you can give me😌🐺. I know this video is super old, but... I just wanted to ask you how you managed to do all of this on paper? I'm an artist, myself, but it isn't easy. I try to draw things like this but just can't figure it out. I was just wondering how you do it so I might be able to figure something out for myself.

My interpratation: the Baron transformed 'Odette' (dark hair) so that she would be his forever (by imprisoning her in an enchanted pond). 'Odile' (light hair) tries to save her sister but is changed as well and sent away. The Baron is infatuated with Odette and waits for her to transform so that he can try to win her heart before she remembers her life as a human, but the memories always come back and she chooses to turn back to a swan instead of being with him. Regardless, he comes back every night, hoping that night will be different and she will finally be won over by him.

So basically, she loses her memory every morning when she turns back into a swan and the process repeats over and over again? That’s what I theorized at least

I think the duke returns every night in hopes that one night she'll entirely forget the past and love him completely. The longer she stays in the lake, or as a swan, the more memories she loses. "Things I yearn to remember..."

So this is my interpretation. Twin sisters at a ball are approached by a tall handsome stranger. The dark haired twin dances with him, but then the man (I'm guessing a wizard of some kind?) turns her into a swan. The light haired twin confronts him, only to be turned into a swan herself. The sisters are separated and lose their memory. The dark haired twin is looked after by the wizard, and during the song she regains her memory.

Dennie's Story to build off this theory, I had the interpretation that the man was trying to court the dark-haired one ' Odile', she rejected him, so he turned her into a swan in the hope that by caring for her she'd grow to love him. The white-haired one ' Odette' confronted him and thus he turned her into a swan as well, but one that would be unrecognizable by Odile.

My interpretation of this is more symbolic of what the characters represent. To me, the two sisters at the ball are two half’s of the same whole. They remind me of the Yin and Yang because when they are turned into birds, their plumage is the opposite color. As the singer, the woman with black hair who turned into a white bird, sings and wonders what she cannot remember, she cannot remember her sister who was her other half. I see the man as the same person, not two different people. At the ball, he showed their potential by turning them into “birds”. Like how the Yin and Yang each hold some of the other color. As the singer is wondering where her other half is, the man is sort of pretending to be that other half that she’s missing as he is representative of the “white” her sister is.

  • @sleeplesssongbird7625

Interesting concept Linh Song! My interpretation was a little different; I was thinking it was closer to a classical story where the Sorcerer is actually in love with one of the sisters and appeared at the ball to officially court her, and while the second sister is happy for her sibling to have found someone, she's also jealous and perhaps the sorcerer sensed she intended harm before their confrontation. It could be he recognized his lover would not accept her sister being cursed, or he felt in some way turning her into a swan was saving her? Her removing of the dress and changing back is her rejection of his attempts. The sorcerer likely is taking care of her and trying to win her back while her memory returns of her sister, and despite his actions he wants to show he loves her, and when either her sister feels remorse or the dark-haired sister comes to terms with the situation (or accepts him?) she can leave the water. I suppose another thought could be that maybe the second sister died perhaps if he was acting as a fill-in for her "missing half." It's like watching someone try to be there for a person who's been through a traumatic experience, or is trying to make up for being indirectly responsible for the past.

Cat Hope Interesting view. I like the thought that the man has good intentions. This song is from Anastasia yes? I don’t remember what happens only that the princess is lost at a young age and later finds her rightful place...? I saw the Disney movie when I was really young. It’s a play though too I think right? I’ve heard A Crowd of Thousands so I think it’s also a play. I should really get around to listening to it. When you say the original story is Anastasia what you’re talking about? I guess that’s what the whole tangent was trying to get to asking 😅.

Thank you! Yes I was referring to the movie haha. I also saw the movie when I was very young- but it's been years. If I recall, this is the song from when she (Anastasia) steps into the ruined Hall of the Palace and has a flashback from her childhood. Definitely love the work S.K. Michels has put into this one- the Sorcerer's appearance is really interesting.

Linh Song First, I'd like to quickly get this out of the way: Anastasia is NOT a Disney movie. Though, it's a very common mistake, so I don't fault you for it. Especially seeing as you haven't seen this movie in forever. (I recommend you re-watch it, by the way. 👍) As for this song and the context in which it is used in the movie: Anastasia happens to follow her puppy companion into the old palace, which is abandoned and going to ruin. While she's there, her memories of the palace begin to surface vaguely, and she gets lost in the feeling of remembering something that she can't quite grasp a hold of. She dances around a bit with figures from her memory whose importance in her life, she can't quite place. Her trip through distant memory lane is then quickly interrupted by Demetri right at the end. So, in terms of theorizing, the context of the song with the movie doesn't really matter, because the song is very self explanatory for both song and movie.

Silver Samurai026 who is demetri? Also, since I don’t really know anything about this, are the two girls in this video actual characters in the play? Sorry I’m asking a lot of questions 😅

My interpretation, perhaps not accurate but fun to muse about nonetheless, is that the two twins represent the man himself. The dark one what he wants to be and the light one what he is. He rejects what he is and in the hopes of becoming what he wants to be. However, no matter how hard or often he tries he can never succeed. If he wants to become the dark one, he must accept the light one and grow from there. Since he never does that, both dark and light are out of his reach. An alternative interpretation is that he killed the black swan (as he has black feathers on him), possibly because she recognizes him as dangerous and tries to keep him away from the singer. When the singer remembers this she decides she would rather be trapped as a swan then with him. She stays in the lake and her sister is there with her in spirit.

I love your work. About how long does it take for you to do a video?

Hmm, I'd say on average it takes me two to three weeks, depending on how much free time I have, and if I push myself to finish, and how long the song is. Also, thank you!

There are so many beautiful interpretations in this comment sections to the already beautiful video, so read those interpretations, ignore this comment, and I will be the corner crying from the beauty of this all.

I love your work. You have splendid ideas for the song you pick. But I noticed that many or your leading men look the same face wise- everything else is wholly original to himself. From one artist to another, try practicing different face shapes. I bet you'll have fun!

Ornella Pastenes Thank you! Most of my animatics are drawn with pencil and paper, though my latest one I did with a tablet :)
