Higgins won the 2014 Oregon Trail Rally over his teammate Travis Pastrana after a massive comeback that came down to the last two stages of the three-day, 18 stage event.
Pastrana and Higgins each drove Vermont SportsCar-prepared 2014 Subaru WRX STI rally cars in what was a Subaru dominated event with the top five finishers at the wheel of Subaru rally cars.
Higgins' supremacy in Oregon is further solidified with this being his fourth win in a row and sixth total, having won every Oregon Trail Rally he has entered!
The Oregon Trail Rally represents round three of the 2014 Rally America National Championship. The event began with unique mixed gravel and tarmac stages at Portland International Raceway and then moved to the scenic yet challenging gravel roads around the Hood River and Dufur regions east of Portland for the bulk of the event.
The Oregon Trail Rally will air on NBC Sports Network on June 1, 2014 at 6pm EDT.
"We had nothing to lose and pushed like mad in places, it's a shame Travis (Pastrana) had his tire issue at the very end but it was a good fight," explained Higgins. "I'm so happy for the team; a Subaru 1-2 finish is great. This is now my sixth win here and we definitely worked for this one!"

The amount of information they need to process all while driving at high speeds, on narrow roads, and surrounded by trees is what makes this sport so incredible to watch.

It's the harmony between driver and navigator that gets me. The practice it would take to learn how far ahead the driver wants to hear the calls and sorting out what terminology to use. Real work.
I had trouble keeping up with the calls let alone considering traction, shifting, and braking at the same time.

I'll never understand why rally isn't more popular in the US. It's some of the toughest, fastest cars out there, whether on pavement, gravel, or dirt, out there going flat-out on real roads with no practice runs. It's a spectacular sport, and I'm incredibly appreciative of Subaru's continued support for rally!
@DesertObserver491

It could be that when compared due to IndyCar, Nascar, Sports Cars, Trophy Trucks, Baja, and other series widely popular there, rallying appears to be a lot more intense from a driving perspective (short twisty tracks, the insane steering/braking inputs needed, the extra brain needed to process pacenotes, the various terrains traversed). Most motorsport fans worldwide would agree that while all racing series are amazing, rallying is on a whole other level. But agreed, these Launch Control videos show there's good potential there with the right number of teams, fans and sponsors
i cant even concentrate to both the roads and the co driver's turns warning.. one of the greatest job 👍

My adrenaline is high and heart still thumping. Thanks for the ride David Higgins and Craig Drew!
I live in Oregon, born and raised 4 generations. I met the men who did the very first otr in the 80s, got some friends, mapped out the stages and timed themselves XD
So so good. I love these two guys, but much respect to all Rally drivers. This stuff is insanely dangerous.
I come back and watch this periodically because its just as nuts as the first time I watched it! All of the information and at the speed he's going Its just insane that he's able to do it all... Drifting on a small dirt road with trees on either side at the speed he was going is amazing to watch! I know you posted your comment a while ago but here goes...Navigators are the opposite of verbose as they need to be clear and consice, not the other way around. I get what you mean tho so it's all good. Rally drivers and navigators are the most talented when it comes to motor sports in my opinion as they need to navigate and drive at breakneck speeds in a vast array of environments such as dirt, gravel, mud, snow, ascending, decending, hard roads, hairpin turns etc, etc.
My hands are sweating just watching him amazingly drive!... amazing co-driver as well!.. did I heard it correctly that the co-driver said "remember it this time!" hahaha
I can barely read in a regular car without feeling sick. I cannot imagine having to do this at that kind of speed and with all the turns and bumps. Not to mention even if I didn't I don't know if I could process all that needs to be said in a quick enough manner
Subaru king of rally.
Learning to follow directions in school seems like a good idea when it comes to this sport.
MY HEART IS PUPPYING!!!!!!!
My foot was lifting there with that long flat out in sixth stretch.
the calls from the co driver are not honestly hard to get. what always gets me is how they drive at such high speeds and through all these bumps and tight corners and still have time to listen carefully lol

Just thought of a great ad line for Rally: "Got BALLS?"
I never knew that the turn he is calling out actually denotes the gear he should be in. I always thought it was just giving a severity of the turn.
@DMStraylight
8 жыл бұрын
Different teams do it differently; some call by severity descending (6 is flat, 1 is hairpin; most common in Rally America), some by severity ascending (1 is flat, 6 is hairpin), some use a 6-point scale, some use an 8-point scale, some call what gear the car needs to be in, etc.

@TheBaegislash
6 жыл бұрын
Over crest and into crest mean exactly what they say. "right 4 over crest" means severity 4 right turn, over a crest (small hill) in the middle of a turn. "right 4 into crest" would mean severity 4 right turn, immediately followed by a crest (small hill)
Idk how these drivers do it this just looks so overwhelming
Not sure if he's navigating or reading out the cricket scores for the BBC. Sounds the same.

Samir really came a long way.
This sounds like jibber-jabber. I can understand what he's saying, but I cannot determine his timing. How exactly do the co-drivers give directions (in terms of their timing)?
@gamestarr16
9 жыл бұрын
+Urban Chaos 2.0 i think his timing is faster in some areas and shorter in others, i think its more about just letting the driver know a certain section instead of just one obstacle at a time
@caseylockwood5512
9 жыл бұрын
+Urban Chaos 2.0 Usually the corners the guy is calling out are 2 or 3 corners ahead of what the driver is actually driving through. But it just depends. Just as a quick FYI, the higher the number, the wider the radius of a turn. So a 6 right would be almost straight and a 2 left would be a really tight turn.
@Aldrenean
8 жыл бұрын
+Urban Chaos 2.0 The timing is mostly from the stuff between the turns -- either "into" or "and" for turns that chain into each other, or distances (like 40, 100, 130 etc.) between the turns. Sometimes you'll also hear "immediate" or "sudden" for really fast switches.

Hopefully Subaru will return to the WRC sooner rather than later.
This must be the most demanding driving in the car racing world.
Four over crest left 2 minus right 3 flat left then flat crest fifty left four over crest
very impressive. Not as good as Ken Block. Block has such good control over the car that the entire drive is smoother. He makes it look very easy. His old car drives better than new ones because it gives more, i.e., it is more forgiving.
