ON23 P41 Q9 Binding Energy of Fission Reaction | Oct/Nov 2023 | Cambridge A Level 9702 Physics

9702/41/O/N/23
9 (a) State what is meant by nuclear fusion.
(b) On Fig. 9.1, sketch the variation of binding energy per nucleon with nucleon number A for values of A between 1 and 250.
(c) On your line in Fig. 9.1, label:
(i) a point X that could represent a nucleus that undergoes alpha-decay
(ii) a point Y that could represent a nucleus that undergoes nuclear fusion.
(d) A nucleus Z undergoes nuclear fission to form strontium-93 and xenon-139
Table 9.1 shows the binding energies of the strontium-93 and xenon-139 nuclei. The fission of 1.00 mol of Z releases 1.77 × 1013 J of energy.
Determine the binding energy per nucleon, in MeV, of Z.

Hi! for the second qn (sketching graph of BE against nucleon no), for a nucleon number of 1 there is only 1 proton (H nucleus), then wouldnt BE be 0 as it is already in its most basic constituent state? thanks!
