On the witch-king's ridiculously large mace

Фильм және анимация

I had to extract this hilarious little clip with Lawrence Makoare as the witch-king of Angmar. Weta (Richard Taylor, Daniel Falconer and John Harding) discuss the designing of the oversized battle mace he carries in Return of the King.
Hope you enjoy.

@@cactusmalone in the book it's made clear that when Merry stabs the King first (as he does in the movie) that his blade affects the Witch King because it has some enchantment on it. This allows Eowyn to get her fatal stab in and kill him, taunting him first that the she will kill him despite the prophecy that no man can kill him, since she is not a man. In the book Merry gets his blade from a tomb in the Barrow-Downs, but in the film he is given one by Aragorn. In the films, therfore, the audience probably assumes he just has an ordinary blade, but in the books it is explained he has a special blade made many aged ago. The movie hints that something happens when Merry stabs him, as the blade evaporates, but it's more ambiguous. Despite that, the scene mostly sticks exactly to the book. Frankly I think you're just looking for a reason to be triggered. Are you so fragile that you feel threatened by a scene of female empowerment from a novel written more than half a century ago?

That thing had "safety hazard" written all over it. I know they did endless rehearsals beforehand, but Miranda has said she didn't have a stunt double, and imagine if during one of the takes, she'd failed to duck in time. Makes me think the terror on her face was partly real. The actor playing the Witch King said in interviews he felt terrible, because they did so many takes and different shots (and only used like four), with Miranda taking a legit beating, leaving her in tears by the end of the day. I think an actual prop mace, like originally intended, would have worked better. The scene could have more action, with the Witch King smashing away, and perhaps toying with her a bit, giving the impression of Eowyn taking a severe thrashing, without Miranda actually getting beat to hell. I mean, the scene is impressive, but being such a huge fan of the books, I was expecting more and always felt it was too short.

It looks silly when you see a person holding it, but in the shots, it works. Sometimes things need to have distorted size for the sake of the shot. They had to make it too big for it to look normal in the shots with the Witch King; if they had made it normal, it would have looked too small.

It is ridiculous in real life, but I can see how it would work in TLOTR; it's both an intimidating weapon to behold; just by looking at it, you know a world of pain is coming your way. I think Peter harnessed his inner Warhammer in this bit for the Witch King's flail. (The difference is that a flail has a chain, a mace has a steady handle. Besides the point, moving on.) When you have 8'+ borderline immortals throwing around fear shrieks and are riding super-evil dragons and you can't see their faces, I think the time for subtlety is pretty much gone. The reason I said "inner warhammer"? Look up "Space Marine Size Comparison Chart". Then look up .998 caliber. And finally, look up "chainsword". Over the top is NORMAL in Warhammer. Peter Jackson just harnessed some of that for this Sistine chapel of a movie.

no, a stick would destroy the movie. and the flail in my opinion went well with him, but yes maybe a flaming sword would have been better

The books actually mentioned that the Nazgul one by one aren't extremly powerful, and Glorfindel, Aragorn and Elrond could easily take one of them one, but due to their number of nine, and terrifying properties (screams and in this universe, over-sized flails) make them Saurons most powerful servants.
