I'm really happy and grateful to hear this song as a 21 years old Burmese girl From Mandalay.

Oh, then you can enjoy hours listening to the many, many versions of this beautiful song/poem. This version is in what I would call Irish Folk tradition. But it really is very English 😉

What a nice comment to make, authentic me. The song comes from so long before you were born but it is nice that you can appreciate what it means. Best wishes from a very old British soldier. I love your people.

@@abocas There were so many brilliant Irish men and women who did an excellent service in the Army in the old days of the British Empire, especially in British India and Burma. So, Irish Folk tradition and 'very English': do you honestly believe there was a big difference ??
I prefer this version. Others are more like opera. Love the songs and poem. I wish I could go back to Mandalay. 😢
He sounds really young. Great voice for this music
I am from Rangon. Rangon(Yangon) and Mandaly are big cities of Burma(Myanamr)
this is IMHO Tony's best rendition, he manages to catch the lyrical quality of Kipling that so many fail to quite get.
They blessed my family several times at Folklore Village in Wisconsin! Was an annual pilgrimage for us from Laclu, Ontario. They continue to be my conduit to tradition, purity and innocence. I remain grateful. Thank you John and Tony : ) You will forever be the perfect pairing.
Brilliant clear diction. A joy to hear. Thank you.

I agree; exactly as should be sung.
A wonderful version.
Whenever I'm down I think of a land far away where a man can work a thirst and be rewarded in kind! Ah the ladies are a plus but what's life without empire
Such enjoyable listening . Thank you for sharing, much appreciated
Visit myanmar country and welcome from mandalay❤❤❤
They were always a treat when they played for us at Campbell’s Coffee House in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. They brought a bit of England to us with simple charm and wit. Gosh, we were so young.
Old but gold
Splendid song
Just great.Thank you both.

Jealous you get to know either of them, 2 men I'd love the chance to shake the hands of. Absolute legends in my opinion, both with amazing voices. As an anthropologist I get such a kick out of their work. Your next chance to speak to John tell him there's still people out there playing them daily, even if its just me!

Brilliant. Had a nice evening with him and a couple people many years ago at Pinewoods sharing my bottle of single malt. By about 3am he was convinced I was a "scholar and a gentleman." I really miss the Brattleboro area, a town I learned about when attending my first Morris Ale and moved to 6 months later.

These gentlemen have passed across my Pandora station quite frequently, so I thought I'd put a face to a voice and yours was the first video I checked out. I didn't realize it was only uploaded today and I was the first to watch! Thanks for sharing, I love these guys!

Glad you found this video. I will post others in the near future. I also have some on my other tube site; one in particular is an opera about Tony Barrand's life. Here's the link to the first chapter: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6ufrrJ6hrHIadY.html
Used to hear them all the time in the late 70s and 80s. Had a long conversation with them about "Green Grow the Rushes".

Im so envious! I would love to discuss the origins of that song with someone but i really cant find that much online about it. I hear that its possibly pre christian and has been changed to match christianity. Do you know anything about that?
@lesberkley3821

@@jackgrant7356 It does (likely) contain some of the pagan customs which the Christians co-opted. I doubt it was an actual pagan song.

Rudyard Kipling.
Doesn't compare even remotely with the rendition of the poem by Charles Dance at the 70th anniversary of VJ Day in London. It's on KZread. Look it up.

sorry, what about the colonial bullshit in this song? Like, and I'm sorry, the whole nostalgic pile about the best is like the worst and there ain't no ten commandment east of suez? This is a rapey, nasty old song! It's right up there with the old portuguese saying, there are no sins south of the equator! I'm dismayed to see Gen Z lapping it up. I guess the world hasn't changed as much as I'd hoped...
