On the Road: Saying goodbye to a local legend
As part of our continuing series "On The Road," Steve Hartman revisits Woody Davis of Corbett, Oregon, who touched his local community with his generosity. Residents were able to return the favor during Davis' final months as he battled Lou Gehrig's disease.

“I feel blessed I’m dying slowly.” What an attitude. What a way to put a silver lining on the darkest of clouds.

He saw death and went with him as old friends.
This is a man that every one will miss, I have known him my whole life, since I was born and till the day of his passing. I lived just in front of his home and he did so much for all of us i will never forget. He is my true Hero.

Guys like that don’t come around very often, a true servant to God and people. Job well done.
Rest in Peace Woody Davis.
Man, I haven't cried in a long time.
Money is just temporary... Goodwill is permanent! That is till the people are courteous enough to remember that!
What a legacy. He cashed out with a high score.
This kind of story tells you _exactly_ what you should do every day. Tell those who matter to you what they mean to you, and why you feel that way, *_before_* another sun sets... for a new day may not come for one of you. Regret is a bitter pill to swallow-- especially when you have just been shown the impact with this story alone what that impact means to the person. Don't wait until they are told they are dying, don't wait for anything. Do it now. You may think that they already know... I would bet you that they do *_not._* Everything that happens after a person is gone is just for the people left behind. Nothing meaningful for the one who is gone at that time. That is why you must do it _before_ they are gone. If you waste a minute, an hour, a day, a week, a month... that person will never have known the truth of how you felt about them, and everything that you appreciated about them (it is foolish to even think this way). This does not mean just the ill, or the very old. This means everyone that you have gratitude and love for, and why. ~Peace!
Man lived fulfilled life.
Here, more than ever, I need to know who could give this a thumbs down. Just can't fathom.
I guess I just don't understand why these wonderful stories don't have more views. People just don't know what they're missing. :)
What a beautiful story. I struggled not to cry. I lost! 700 people! What a blessing! So sweet the family got to feel the love from the community before it was too late. I always say “if you can’t be bothered bringing me flowers while I’m alive and can enjoy them, don’t bother putting them on my grave after I’m gone and can’t see them. Then you’re just buying them for you!” Thank you Steve! Great story!

This is so hard to watch my aunt carol passed so fast from als she put up such a good fight it was hard for her to let me see her and it was hard for me to see her but that last visit when I saw her I knew it would’ve my last she passed two days after seeing her she was at peace knowing I loved her so much that I even got a tattoo for her a promise to see her again it doesn’t matter that I only knew her for about two years she was my whole world and I was hers she taught me so much with out even saying a word but through her eyes and actions she always called me beautiful and because of that I learned what self confidence is and no one will ever take that away from me
Steve Hartman, Charles Kuralt would be very proud of you.

I would like to think that Charles 'is' proud of him. Either way you are right.
Don’t know how many locals from Byram and Stanhope will see this, but this story reminds me of Waving Willie. Always waving to everyone.
What a beautiful human being, if everyone could strive to be a little more like this individual, the world would be an amazing place to live in.
I can’t even put in to words the heart ache i felt at the end of this video. What a true humble man 💙
Every time I watch these stores a huge load of cut onions suddenly appears out of no where! What's up with these tears trying to make rivers? I hate it but I love it! Jesus wept!
This Steve Hartman clip is one of my favorites.
Oh my goodness. What an awesome guy.
A wonderful man who learned just how much he meant to everyone in town. What a legacy to have and still have the chance to let it fill your heart while you yet live.
Thank you for putting together this story just right.
I'm cry so badly watching this, so awesome man 😭
Such a sweet man...👋loved by many...
I like Steve Hartman and his OnTheRoad segments. I do not see how he does not cry. I bawl like a baby sometimes.
That has to be the most dignified casket I've ever seen. And carrying him to the cemetery in the wagon? You couldn't have honored a king any better.
God Bless this man & his family ❤
This story warms my heart
whos cutting those damn onions. This is so sad. But yet so happy that he was able to see people help him in his final days.
I really enjoy watching Steve's stories. I call them ''HAPPY STORIES'' and I think we need to hear more. They touch you, they move you and they might put a tear in your eye and I think those are the kind of stories we need to hear.

This man reminds me of my grandpa I miss him
This made me cry, God Bless him and all those who returned the love.
I am just picturing he was waving to God and ran up to him for a welcome home hug.
"Let us learn to show our friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead." -- F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Great Gatsby" How true that is.
This is so beautiful
It's men like this who embody the true American spirit😊

Wow. What a person he had a lot of heart and wisdom. He clearly knew what mattered in life and in dying/death. Its beautiful he died knowing how much he was loved in return❤ ❤❤
What Woody meant to all those people just can't be bought, so Woody was in fact a Very Rich man. Cheers All
What a lovely story, it makes me believe in humanity, so good to see the recognition of his good acts by the community in which he lived. Send all respects from Brazil for this wonderful exemple of life.
God Bless you Woody Davis!!! God knows YOU Sir!!!!
Thank You Steve! Wonderful story! 😢❤️😢❤️😢
I found this video deeply moving. I personally have seen people with disabilities that have made it impossible for them to perform daily tasks. The love the people had for this immensely wonderful person, was beautiful to see.
What an amazing man!

Seems like a beautiful man and soul. 💕🙏RIP
Corbett sounds a great place to live nice people.
Awww. 🥲 May he RIP. So sweet his family and him to share in their love with the community.
Wow that was truly sad and I pray that his family finds peace in the fact that before he left this earth the people he touched in life had the chance to actually show him how much they cared for him . so so sweet I don't know what to say but may the most high yahawah take care of him and rap him in his arms amen
I'm a sobbing mess😣😫😭😭
What an incredible man...and town...

Wihl Zhini I can relate to you my good sir. Being a bipolar type 2 patient, I also have emotional distractions from committing acts of kindness. the method I have found to combat this, is using the acts of kindness you do reach put and do, treat as a justification to keep living. it will spark a need and addiction to kindness, That feels so necessary, it will be even harder to ignore than your anger. All it takes is the first step.

WOW! what a wonderful story, sad yet wonderful. We literally have the identical samething going on here in our small town of council grove ks, the towns furniture seller and a great handyman passed suddenly of a heart attack this past friday, the entire community enjoyed this man as much as the community loved the kind man in this video. Folks, be kind to one another, it genuinely makes a difference.
Thank you for this story. Wish I could have been blessed to meet the man...
I just knew this great man after 8 years he passed, I am really touching about this pure and unbelievable kindness, with love and respect, R.I.P
Truely beautiful to see love shiny and bright through a whole community....lets spread it world wide ;)
This made me cry...How touching...RIP Woody :(
This story brings tears to a man's eyes that never cries
I cant control my tears......
I wish we had more news like this!
Corbett is a very special place. If you’re driving east on I-84 out of Portland, take the time to get off the interstate and drive through Corbett. Better still, stop at the little market and get a bite to eat.
What a man!!! Rest in peace. I wish there were more stories like this on KZread and in our news. Makes you proud to be an American.
OMG... :'( I am so late seeing this but I'm so happy I did! ;') What an awesome guy and what wonderful people. R.I.P. Woody Godspeed!
Wonderful Man!!!❤️🎉🎉🎉🎉

There is a special place in heaven for people like this.
Little bit kindness goes along way. Start with little.
So inspirational....
Oh wow. I just watched this & the town made him his casket. He got to see what everyone wrote & how he was lived. Great tribute.
What a nice man. I hear my uncle had a similar big funeral like that in the town he's from. I regret not going myself
This is beautiful ❤️
Such an amazing human being, this made me cry.
Respect 💯💪👊👊
Definitely in tears
Truly a rich man.
with love, and respect...R.I.P.
A life well spent. I'd make my family go. we can learn a lot from his attitude
Always makes me cry
this is so sad. god bless him and his family. im crying too
Great story ❤
How beautiful.
What a beautiful soul..
Tears on this one for sure. What an incredible, heartfelt story of a truly remarkable man and the community who cared right back.
RIP Woody. THIS is a REAL human being, THIS IS when humanity is at its best. I could care less about RICH People, I could care less about POLITICIANS, I could care less about the MEDIA, I could care less about the CHURCH. Everything that the Church teaches is BUNK, unless you put it into use. What IS important is what he did when he was alive, what he accomplished in his community, the impact he had, and the way people responded to him. RIP Woody. A true Angel on EARTH.
Thats so bittersweet
A true hero ❤❤❤
Wonderful way to go❤️
