On The Heavenly Hierarchy - Pseudo-Dionysius

Pseudo-Dionysius - The Complete Works (Greek and English) (amzn.to/2Z54WXv)
Translation by: John Parker
[From Wikipedia:] Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, also known as Pseudo-Denys, was a Syrian Christian theologian and philosopher of the late 5th to early 6th century, who wrote a set of works known as the Corpus Areopagiticum or Corpus Dionysiacum.
The author pseudonymously identifies himself in the corpus as "Dionysios", portraying himself as the figure of Dionysius the Areopagite, the Athenian convert of Paul the Apostle mentioned in Acts 17:34. This false attribution to the earliest decades of Christianity resulted in the work being given great authority in subsequent theological writing in both East and West.
The works of Dionysius are mystical, and show strong Neoplatonic influence. For example, he uses Plotinus' well-known analogy of a sculptor cutting away that which does not enhance the desired image, and shows familiarity with Proclus. He also shows influence from Clement of Alexandria, the Cappadocian Fathers, Origen, and others.
According to pseudo-Dionysius, God is better characterized and approached by negations than by affirmations. All names and theological representations must be negated. According to pseudo-Dionysius, when all names are negated, "divine silence, darkness, and unknowing" will follow.

Have meant to read this for many years. I was not at all disappointed. That we may with a few clicks have access to such works is really quite amazing. Even as recently as a few decades ago, who would have imagined this. Obviously it would not happen though, without a certain requisite of some magnanimity of spirit. For this reason I thank you for all your efforts.

Fire in water are both the Word of God in their degrees of purification. The water of the Word washes our souls from particular levels of impurities. The fire of the Word burns to ashes the deeply set false beliefs and knowledge from our subconscious mind. The Hammer of God's Word smashes the most stubborn twisted philosophies we find hard to sever from or difficult to overcome.

The apathetic theology or practice is also used in Hinduism. In practice it is a spontaneous non-verbal recognition by pure subjectivity , "I ", that every thing that appears within itself has no being , is transient and it is rejected as , not I. "According to pseudo-Dionysius, God is better characterized and approached by negations than by affirmations. All names and theological representations must be negated. According to pseudo-Dionysius, when all names are negated, "divine silence, darkness, and unknowing" will follow." "Neti-neti is a Sanskrit expression that translates to "neither this, nor that" or "not this, not this." This expression is used in Hinduism, mainly in Jnana yoga and in Advaita Vedanta (non-dualistic spiritual practice). Neti-neti is a form of analytical meditation that helps the individual understand the nature of brahman (absolute reality) by first understanding what is not brahman. A "neti-neti search" is one of the key elements of Jnana yoga practice. It is an exercise in negating rationalizations and other distractions from the non-conceptual meditative awareness of reality."

Things seen and unseen , what a great phrase . Dan attwell is one of the best things on KZread as far as I'm concerned. Having a background in theology I find myself here quite often with Dan who is someone that I consider is at the top of this field. The many energies and rays that effect the various aspects of the human make up Have they're homes in the celestial realm. This is categorized as the divine order and play a part in the seasons and cycles as well.

Nice work on the 9 ranks of the heavenly host. There is fire in water , a sparkle in the rain. 1:50:03 to 1: 50: 30 I think it was a book by Jacob boehme where I first heard this about the fire in water. The 9 ranks I found in a book of Angel's when I was very young. When only one rank can be called Angel's. Good job on this one Dan , like all your work 👍

Glad you can see ahead that there is method to my madness; if "all of philosophy is a footnote to Plato," it is astonishing how many authors got their Platonism through a Dionysian lens. Virtually all the figures I discuss, from the Franciscans and Dominicans to people like Ficino and Pico, they all recapitulate and embellish Pseudo-Dionysian philosophy (largely because they thought he was the Dionysius of the New Testament, though he really lived centuries later and borrowed extensively from Proclus and Plotinus).

The one whom most call lucifer as the light bearer is in fact HyLL ben Shachar [brilliant son of the morning] as HYLL is rooted similarly to Hallel in hallelujah and means "praise" but can also mean "brilliant" "shining" and Shachar is actually not the golden dawn with sun shining on the horizon but the darkness of the night before the sun begins it break across the darkness. And Shachar can mean Enchanted or charm. So HyLL ben Shachar= Is the brilliant son of the enchanter(darkness before the dawn).

The Holy LORD name is yHvH so perhaps the Trinity is in actuality... a Quaternity with two (H) separately diverse holy spirits not as wives but more as a comforter... as a private and pesonal (H) to comfort with the y and then the v a second comforting [H]? But even as EvE is the body and (h)Adam is he head perhapseven in the Godhead the (H) is with the y uniform as one and v is the head of the other [H] in seperate but similar union?

For example the spirit of the cherubs is described as being present in/powering the ophanim. It's not a trinity or quarternity but dyads the first begetting the second which made all other things.

It's triune in all respects. 3 celestial hierarchies with 3 ranks in each, each reflecting the person's of the Godhead; for instance the Seraphim(fire) God is oft describes as a consuming fire, the Cherubim (wisdom) Jesus Christ the Logos, the second person of the most Holy Trinity; and the Thrones, upon which the ineffable is seated, reflecting within their capacity the Holy Spirit , carrying the energies between Father and Son. Three is where multiplicity begins without dialectical tension.

Dionysius believes in the intelligibility and place of matter in the natural order. In that respect he isn't a gnostic. I would also say the ultimate union in Dionysianism uplifts the church community into union, it doesn't necessarily entail a moment of mystical personal union. Yes he is influenced by Proclus, but he is still very much dealing in Christian metaphysics.

@@Walker_Flocker Dionysius isn't a Gnostic lol. He isn't a dualist which Gnosticism relies upon a dualistic interpretation of Platonism. Creation isn't viewed as evil in Dionysius, in fact he views the act of creation as an outpouring of goodness and divinity, energies of God, and not as something evil. And matter, unlike in Gnosticism, is not ascribed ontological existence as something evil, but rather is a predication of logoi, forms, that exist of God self-manifesting Himself as intellectual properties.
