On the brink of War! Standoff at Checkpoint Charlie
On October 27th ,1962 the world stood on the brink of Nuclear War. At a small border crossing between East and West Berlin, the Soviet Union and the United States stood toe to toe, tank to tank, ready to start World War Three. The standoff at Checkpoint Charlie had begun.
In response to a diplomatic incident, Soviet and American commanders on the ground moved T-54 and M-48 tanks to the border between east and west Germany. The standoff lasted for hours as officials waited to see if the situation could be resolved. It was on of the most tense direct standoffs of the cold war. @AnyHistory
Historical Background: The Cold War began shortly after World War II ended in 1945. In anticipation of a Soviet attack, the United States and its allies formed the NATO military alliance in 1949, naming their global policy against Soviet influence containment. In response to NATO, the Soviet Union established the Warsaw Pact in 1955. The 1948-1949 Berlin Blockade, the 1927-1949 Chinese Civil War, the 1950-1953 Korean War, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the 1956 Suez Crisis, the 1961 Berlin Crisis, and the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis were all major crises during this period. The United States and the Soviet Union vied for influence in Latin America, the Middle East, and decolonizing states in Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

The same year with the Caribbean nutklear crisis would be too much ! When the wall was erected, simultaneously at Tushino the sovs displayed their newest flying baddies, a B-58 red wannabe inkluded.

@@ElonMasks Both had to do with tense moments during the war, but the Missile Crisis is definitely more recognized than the Standoff at Checkpoint Charlie. Though I will say, TSACC was more tense given the Russians and Americans were RIGHT IN FRONT OF EACH OTHER. Roughly 65.58 meters from each other, with both sides threatening to fire at each other, and that's terrifying.

@@imokguysivetoldyoutoomanyt2427 You are right. Even throwing a stone and hit one of the soldiers(doesn't matter which sides) can trigger a all hell breaks loose between these 2 giants at the moment.

Very interesting. I know of the Berlin Crisis but not that it was caused by opera tickets. I believe there is now a restaurant at Checkpoint Charlie. Thanks for the post.

Checkpoint Charlie is still there. Restaurants are plenty in this Region
Its very wholesome on how they defuse the situation by one sides tank moves an inch back and the other side follow until both sides went home...

The US should have moved the troops towards the Soviets, they were weaker in every sense
A WW3 averted in 1962, and now 2022 we have another possible nuclear standoff between US and Russia over Ukraine. These two countries never seem to get along.

They never will until Russia changes like for example a Coupe or a civil war, that would have the potential for a better leader to get into power and build a new and better relationship with NATO

I'm visiting Berlin and I came across your video. I'm 41 seconds into this video, and...great intro and good clear voice. Looking forward to the rest!
There’s nothin’ that gives me goosebumps except for this footage of tanks facing each other. I don’t know how to tell the feeling of what I feel except goosebumps.

Things were bad enough when a Hind-D came across the border and landed in camp gates in 1984.
I am friends with a man who was there and was on the cover of LIFE magazine Sept 8, 1961 as a result. Hell of a guy.
Excellent job telling the story of the purpose of Checkpoint Charlie and the defense of Allied access rights into East Berlin! Fantastic! Rafferty NCOIC Allied Checkpoint Charlie 89 90

I do like the timbre, elocution, tonality, and pacing of the narrator. Very good job, Russ! And no, I did not know about the opera tickets issue! One more reason to avoid going to the opera, I suppose ...😮😯😲💃

Your pronunciation of the word nuclear needs some work, but otherwise a good video.
The mere whiff of weakness would have tolled the Westless Berlin reunification.
The Americans tank barrels was pointed straight while soviet was angled upwards
Americans casually deploying a nuke it a city centre 😂
I never like it when I hear nuke-yah-ler instead of the correct nuke-klee-er.

The Americans would not last that long in west berlin. Remember that Berlin is essentially surrounded by the Soviets. Unless They hold out till NATO breakthrough the Fulda gap, they are not going anywhere.
This was 1961, not 1962.
