On the block - Typhon 3s

Ойын-сауық

In this video we open up a new series for the channel where discussion and experience play a great roll in the rating a rig gets from the channel. In this first video in the series, AJ and Rob discuss the ins and outs of the Typhon 3s from Arrma. This car has been out for a while now and has become one of the channels favorite newcomer bashers. It is tough, fast, and easy to control. Come check it out as we kick off this new addition to the channel.

    How to fix the shocks from leaking : In the bottom there are two o-rings and a spacer. Replace the spacer with two o-rings, in total you now have 4 o-rings in the bottom of the damper. Mine have not leaked since I did this, running 3-4 months now with no need for maintenance.

    The Typhon 3s v3 was the second RC car I bought last year and I have had great luck with it. I have broken some a arms and had to replace the chassis once. But It has been bashed hard and the breakages were not the buggy's fault. Total driver error. (I let my 5 yr old drive most of the time and the cousins.) It takes the abuse even when I take it to the skate park near me. This has been a great RC for me. 👏🔥💯👍

    Fair score and well sead. Personal I think the only weaknesses are the shocks and the plastic spur gear. Having sead that I've broken arms, bumpers and even snapped the chassis clean in half! But if you do stupid stuff you can't blame the car 🤗 They are definitely an awesome starting platform though.

    Awesome videos, i have learned so much from your tutorials. I'ved notice that you don't have much videos on the Arrma Typhon 3S, i was wondering if you can make a video on how to modify the Typhon 3S so we can install a Typhon TLR body or the Typhon 6S body. I noticed the body mounting post on the 3S are different from the 6S and the TLR versions. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing your knowledge with the community.

    The 6s body is wider than the 3s but will go on. It will require some modding of the new body but it shouldn’t be too difficult. However, the 3s body will not go on the 6s because it is too narrow. Perhaps we will do a vid to show how we would go about it. I hope it helps😎👍

    Within our family we have a Granite, 3s Typhon, 6s Typhon, and a couple of Kratons. In comparing just the Granite and the 3s Typhon I find the Thyphon a much easier to drive rig. The granite is much more squirrely and prone to wheelie and do endos when braking. I put some of this to the taller cg but more so to the short wheel base. The longer wheelbase cars just seem to plant and go better. It would be a good comparison if you were to run your long and short wheelbase ( Vortek ) cars and give us your opinion based on two similar cars. Part of my problem is lack of experience driving, which you don't seem to suffer from. Keep up the good work. lg

    Really appreciated this video, thank you! I'm looking to buy my first RC buggy for light bashing use and had narrowed down my choice to one of Typhon 3S, Typhon 6S and HoBao Hyper VS2. I'll now be buying the Typhon 3S. I've seen some nicely priced metal shocks on eBay so will get those too. Quick question: For light bashing and good overall stability what weight shock fluids would you recommend? I'm guessing maybe 40 or 45 in the front and 50 in the rear.

  • @AJJAMStudios

    @AJJAMStudios

    For the 3s rigs I usually go for 35 weight oil both front and rear. For me, it allows the suspension to feel the ground better. The rig is not that heavy so it tends to run like a board with heavier oils. Let me know how your weight choice works out. I’m glad we were helpful 😎👍

    I personally rate the Typhon a 4/10 because its broken every time i ran it. The only RC i ever got rid of. Traded it for a Losi Rock Rey. It isnt the size or the power of the Typhon, just broke constantly. I have a Losi DB Pro which is nearly identical in size and literally only broke it the first 3 times out, then had a receiver die. Ive not had an issue with it since and give the Losi DB Pro a higher score. I do believe the Losi costs a little more though, havent looked up the price in a LONG time.

    I think you slightly undersold this as a car just for beginners. I have a Kraton 6S for serious bashing, but have been looking for a smaller 3S car to replace my cheap and fragile (compared to Arrma or Traxas anyway) ZD Racing 1/10 scale truggy. So as a secondary car of an experienced RC car enthusiast (starting with the old analog nicad brushed motor Tamiya Frog and Dirt Thrasher in the 80's and 90 with a few years gap until I discovered digital lipo powered brushless setups with proper drive shafts and bearings) I now see the Typhon 3S as a prime contender for that niche secondary/smaller/side/cheapass project car. The only negative thing I can think of for myself is it might not be small enough to fit in my backpack designed to fit 1/10 cars, which I use if I'm hiking or taking the motorcycle to the track. The ZD truggy barely fits, but its got huge monster truck tyres. A 1/8 scale buggy is probably going to be the same size or smaller than a 1/10 truck, especially in width. The light weight and smaller footprint are a massive bonus if I'm hiking anywhere, because I've learned that carrying a 6S Kraton in an oversized backpack is exhausting, cumbersome, and lacks any sort of grace. I've gotten to the point where I'll now only take the Kraton out at all if I can borrow a car to get it there, and take the ZD truggy in the specialty RC backpack if going by foot or motorcycle. It's a good tough vehicle with dirt cheap spares (which I have lots of) but the ease at which it destroys drive shafts and A-arms has taken all of the fun out of that car for me. I know I can rip an A-arm off and I have at least 2 or 3 spares, but on the day, when it rips off the show is over. So I drive it like I borrowed it from my grandma and lament even having to fix it when I get home if I still manage to break it. Cartwheels in a similar sized buggy to a 1/10 truggy are less frequent and severe, so that along with the famed plastic chassis Arrma toughness ticks all the boxes for me. I was originally looking towards the Vortechs as my intended secondary replacement, but I think I'm now set on the Typhon 3S instead, even though the Typhon 6S wasn't (and still isn't) a consideration. Great review guys, apologies for putting my entire RC life story and philosophy into a single comment!

    Sometimes I think people might take me more seriously if I changed my username. But then I remembered why I chose this name, precisely because no one could ever take seriously the mindless ramblings of someone who believes the pen is mightier, but who couldn't be bothered to proofread his own username for typos. Ironic, isn't it? Isn't it? No really, does this qualify as irony or not? I'm bad with the English lingo.

    Agreed, the Typhon is not "just" for beginners, but it is a great place to start. It is light, fast, tough, and runs a long time on the standard 5000Mah batteries. I have the Vorteks and it is also cool, but there's something about the Typhon that just feels right to me. I've had to switch out the arms on the Vorteks, and my Senton 3s, but after the RPM switch I haven't broken one yet. I do have the RPM arms for the Typhon 3s but the stock ones are still holding up nicely. If you haven't seen the unboxing video for the Typhon 3s yet, I suggest you give it a look; we really test it and it comes through with flying colors. As far as your story goes, it's nice to find someone who has a long history in the hobby just like myself; I began in the late 70's. I did step away from the hobby for a time, but the Lipo and brushless stuff drew me back in. I can't say I'm sorry for coming back to the hobby, for it has led us here, you and I, talking about the new stuff and thinking of the cars that got us here. I appreciate your comment, and look forward to others in the future. Bash on, my friend. AJ

    @@AJJAMStudios I can say it was equally nice to find your channel, maybe it's a generational thing but your videos seem more down to earth than the other RC channels done by younger guys. You also seem to have a similar mindset to mine with regards to things like functionality, durability, ease of maintenance, finding the best cheapest upgrades, etc so you have a lot more videos with practical and useful knowledge than any other channel I've seen. I watched your Kraton EXB essential upgrades vid several times after deciding to get one, plus a couple of other related ones like the ear plug diff upgrade. I ordered all of the upgrade parts online and waited until they all arrived before buying the EXB from my local hobby store about 6 months ago, because I didn't want to be tempted to run it before bulletproofing it. With my previous RC cars (and planes, helis, quadcopters, etc) it was rare that I would end an RC session with anything other than breaking an essential component. But so far I've never ended a Kraton bash session due to breaking something, essential, and I have your excellent maintenance and upgrade videos to thank for playing a major role in that. I think the only things I've broken on it are two top shock mount bolts, both done in the same bad landing off a skate ramp onto grass. That didn't end the session though, I found I could get them to hold in place with some Kapton tape I had on hand, as long as I didn't launch it or snap the steering back too fast with wild turns. Anyway I just realised I've written another life story chapter here so I'd better sign off. Thanks again for putting out such great old school style videos about new gadgets!

    That is awesome to hear. The idea that our format is well liked is a great thing. Thank you for giving us an insight we had sort of lacked. From this side of the cameras it can be hard to see how we affect those who watch our content. We do our level best to get what we've learned out there as a way to help the RC community as a whole. I also spent some time with RC airplanes, helicopters and such (I'm not good with helicopters). The hobby can take many forms, and there's a niche' for everyone. We just found a way to do what we love (Bashing) and share it with others; while still holding down full time jobs. It's a struggle at times, but comments like yours are what make it all worth the effort. P,S, I'm glad your Kraton is holding up well. Thanks for commenting 😎👍

    @@AJJAMStudios Thanks for the feedback on my feedback. I don't comment often because they usually turn into epic walls of text like I did above. But this time I felt like I needed to put some more background into why I thought the Typhon 3S could also be ideal for a non-beginner. Also, if you're wondering about my much less serious comment above lamenting my choice of username, it's because I forgot I was using my loungeroom's generic account that I set up for public use. I noticed as soon as I posted my first comment which was intended to be taken seriously, so I felt I had to poke fun at myself for doing so under my ridiculous sounding generic joker account. I love driving my Typhon but man this thing is constantly broken and on the bench. It takes a lot of upgrades to really make it durable. Plastic shocks leak and need to be replaced. Plastic spur is trash and needs replacement with metal. Rear plastic input and crown gear cannot take 3s power for any sustained period of time so you can either replace every few months or switch those to metal as well. Chassis flex breaks the rear slipper hubs and gearbox case after awhile. At this point I've spent a lot more money on my Typhon than my Maxx which while much more expensive out of the box is far more durable than the Typhon IMO. If I can ever get this thing bulletproof it would be amazing.
