On Terroir, Riesling & Austrian Wines | Andreas Wickhoff, Master of Wine | Wine Podcast

Welcome to the 4th episode of the No Sediment Wine Podcast. In this episode I sat down with Andreas Wickhoff, Master of Wine & Managing Director of Weingut Bründlmayer to dive deep into the topic of terroir - from what is terroir to climate change. We also talked about Riesling grape variety, which is responsible for some of the best and age-worthy wines of Austria, as well as Austrian wines in general and their potential of becoming collectible and investment wines.

Another interesting and geeky deep dive into viticulture, viniculture and Austrian wine. I especially like his point that there human element is often forgotten when talking abouts terroir. Us wine geeks do get too much into soils to the neglect of other terroir influences. Andreas make a valid point about the distinction between climate change and global warming. Climate change is what makes winemakers jobs more difficult every year. When he talked about Riesling's ability to make a very wide range of wine styles, I thought of Hungarian Furmint. As it can make complex and age worthy dry single vineyard examples, oak aged dry whites, off dry styles, Tokaji Aszu and sparkling wines as well. Thanks for making these in-depth podcasts, Agnes. Very cool and educational, they're are much appreciated.

Thank You. Yes, but he speaks very well in English and it is easy to listen to him. Which is also important for those who only use audio platforms. 🍷

Wow, what an educational discussion again, thanks! Eye opening considerations about the mythical terroir and maybe the 'classic' definitions can be refreshed and elaborated after all. Looking forward that dissertation 😀 🍷

To be completely honest, I haven’t tasted that much, mostly only ice wines, and my opinion is purely theoretical. But if understanding correctly - the high quality and limited production is also seen in their still wines. 🙏🏻
