Lot of trust it seems in a big band. Trust between arranger and performers, what’s written, band members, trusting yourself to know where you are at in the song and where the band is. Too stressful to think about but what you shared sounded great and you fit in just right so you’re doing right!

yoyo frankie! been subbed for a long while, need ur advice: im a functions/session bass player and wanted to start doing vlogs in the future of gigs: how do u capture audio/video at gigs? ive seen some options for zoom recorders and i have a fairly decent camera on my phone. any info for like, audio capture, mounting stuff etc would be really appreciated! ps: love ur channel and videos, always inspiring seeing a master at work in a field im in/ aspire to as well! pps: im based in the UK, been looking into agencies to expand myself, any thoughts on how much a bass player would need to read (im relearning reading atm) and what opportunities this might bring to me? obvs i realise as a winds/brass player its essential. wondering about what sort of gigs would be helped/more available if i read? i got my grade 8 20 years ago, and am reasonably competent at the majority of genres and been gigging as a session/function player for about 15 years or so

Hey! I would recommend using whatever stuff you already have access to and then figure out what gear works best for your needs after that (it’ll be different as a bass player). I’ve used just my phone, but all of my camera gear should be linked in the description of the video. If it isn’t check out the video on my channel titled “all of my gear in one video” I would say reading could definitely help, but using your ears is arguably more important. Definitely be able to read chord symbols though!

@FoolishFrankie thanks for the feedback, I'll check our ur gear video! My ear is pretty damn good, I learn by ear exclusively thus far, as it really efficient/I'm so used to learning massive sets.for example, karaoke house band I learned 88 songs in under two weeks for that project. I wanted reading basically for things like Pit work/shows/theatre shows etc. I already read chart/jazz charts fluidly so that's good to know I'm on the right track! Thanks again for the reply. Ur channel is a big source of motivation/inspiration for me, keep up the good work!

Ok, tell the truth. You just don't want to play clarinet, right? There's no way someone as talented as you are cannot play that just as well as you play all these other woodwinds. Just wondering. Awesome vid.

No I definitely am significantly worse on clarinet😂 but I also do not want to play it so two things can be true😂 thanks for the kind words and for watching!

Most relatable comment: “I gave up the clarinet years ago.” I’ve played sax since 1980. Picked up flute in early 1982 and flute may be my most audience impressed instrument even though I’ve never put much work into it. Clarinet however, OMG me and that instrument just do not get along. I’ve tried since about 1985 and while I’m able to do what I do decently, I can’t do a lot and am nowhere near as proficient on clarinet as saxes or flute. Clearly I should have given up the clarinet years ago!
