I agree with your points on being skeptical about critics and criticism in art specifically, however! She was married to Annie Leibovitz, so keeping that in mind and in context, can perhaps lessen the blow of her criticism in a sense, in my opinion. Otherwise, nice summary of her book!

You should never say you like or don't like art, because who wants to know why you think what you think and it would take too long to find out. ASK: what is the artist trying to say; does the artist achieve their goal. Photographic art is democratic, anyone with a camera can create it. Some photos are more successful than others.

I disagree, I like to know what people think about art. People have binary opinions about food, cities, books, politics, furniture, clothes and they should be able to like or dislike art. I think the current protected status of art repels people and they turn away from art to other visual media like films or television.

Oh, one last thing, I appreciate your thoughts on the book, however I don’t agree with your choice of word at the very end to describe her book as very authoritative. I do not like the word authoritative to describe anything unless you’re a prison warden. Especially if it concerns art. Susan Sontag, while a good writer, with good insights and retrospective thoughts on the subject, is, in my mind, just another person sharing her views and thoughts on the subject. Mind you, she had a particularly famous and very talented partner to share and gain insights on the subject.
