On Location with Joel McCrea, Barbara Hale and Jimmy Hunt! Plus INVADERS FROM MARS! AWOW!
Ойын-сауық
Working with western superstar Joel McCrea in two movies was a thrilling adventure for child actor Jimmy Hunt. Plucked from grammar school in Culver City because he looked like a young Van Johnson with his curly hair and freckles, eight year old Jimmy Hunt made his acting debut as a young Johnson in HIGH BARBAREE. The natural actor learned quickly and appeared in over 40 movies; including, SORRY, WRONG NUMBER, PITFALL, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and several westerns.
Jimmy’s favorite memories are of the two westerns he made with Joel McCrea. The first was SADDLE TRAMP in 1950, a year he appeared in two other westerns. They were director John Sturges’ THE CAPTIVE starring Lew Ayers and Teresa Wright and ROCK ISLAND TRAIL with Forrest Tucker. The second Joel McCrea feature, THE LONE HAND (1953), took Jimmy and his mother on location to Colorado and gave him the key role of McCrea’s son and the film’s narrator.
For film fans, Jimmy’s most remembered movie is the classic sci-fi Technicolor feature directed by William Cameron Menzies, the still frightening INVADERS FROM MARS (1953).
Hunt joined Rob Word to talk about his amazing career at The Autry, Nov 8, 2022, for A WORD ON WESTERNS and shared stories of what it was like to work with so many cinema legends and to still be recognized by his fans at memorabilia and celebrity autograph shows.

What can we expect when our former President sleeps with porn stars, cheats on his wives and taxes, instigates a failed insurrection and after losing badly says it was rigged and now wants to suspend our Constitution. Anything like this ever happened before, in your lifetime? Or Ever?

Mr. Hunt talking about playing Cowboys & Indians or Army (when I was a kid we called it War or later GI Joe) were some of the same things we did in the late '70s into the '80s. The country's values were still fairly much intact at that point. Things have certainly changed.
Been waiting all morning for this! Thanks Rob.
Yes, watching your videos of the yesteryear westerns are comforting. This generation could learn a lot by watching them and applying some of their principles.

Thanks for your comment, AJ. Glad to see some from a younger generation enjoying westerns. Spread the word and share our interviews! Let's keep westerns going.
as a kid actor jimmy Hunt was such a natural that's what made his parts look so convincing and why he was getting the jobs that he got, not a snob noes brat as Lucille Ball would say, a fine show Word as always and hats off to Jimmy, very likable and enjoyable to listen to, thanks Word and Joel McCrea had a real likable smile, miss seeing him
Great story, and Jimmy and his story of all the great actors and how well they all got along and was successful and made for great entertainment and be able to see the westerns a great genre of our time.
Lovely interview Rob, much thanks, we need to cherish the last of these actors who entertained us as kids😊👍
Great interview! Joel McCrea was and is a favorite of mine and many of my generation! Thank you Jimmy and thank you Rob! Your interviews on Sunday morning are a high point!!
@A Word on Westerns : Rob! How fortunate you are to interview such great actors, unpretentious actors! Jimmy brought back a lot of memories, playing cowboy's and Indian's, and army! Jimmy is so down to earth that you want to invite him him for supper. Rob, you are the very best and please keep bringing your fans these great interviews!!!!

There is something to be said for a long gone generation. I'm not even 40 yet, but this is real entertainment. I had the opportunity to meet Wyatt McCrea and his wife Lisa a while back. I named my son Wyatt, and I always encourage him to watch these with me, so he can learn that once upon a time, there were values and morality. Thanks again Mr. Word for another great interview.
What a fabulous interview with Jimmy Hunt! I love the history he shared and the stories of his interaction with the other actors. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful interviews with us!
I am about the same age as Jimmy(maybe a little bit younger) and when I saw Invaders from Mars it scared the pants off of me. I have said it before but Rob I so enjoy seeing these people from my childhood and I thank you for bringing them in.
Thanks for another interview of forgotten stars like Mr. Hunt and all the great people he worked with and keeping those memories alive.
I'm just a youngster (65), but I love watching all these interviews. Yes, as a kid, I had a beautiful 6 shooter, and lever action rifle. My brother and I would watch Roy Rogers and then go outside and have our own western adventures.
Wonderful reminiscences of Mr. Hunt on 50's filmmaking. Rob, thank you for providing these tiny glimpses of a time gone by. I'm sure it evoked fond memories for many of your viewers who lived through this time.

I like this interview with Jimmy Hunt. Jimmy is a good storyteller, lots of fun & very interesting. It was nice to hear that Joel McCrea was a great guy. Thanks, Rob!
Such a GREAT interview with Jimmy! So very rewarding to hear heart warming stories of one of my favorite stars, Joel McCrea! I saw Invaders from Mars when I was 8. Scariest movie I had ever seen as a youngster. To imagine that my parents, my protectors, could become zombie monsters blew my young mind!! Rob, another wonderful job of being a master interviewer. The hours of homework that you must do in preparation really pays off big as you draw interesting and fascinating information from years sometimes forgotten. It didn't go unnoticed how grateful Jimmy was for having a chance to relive a positive part of his past. Thanks Rob for all you do in memorializing an enjoyable part of our lives and passing onto generations an era that may never be repeated.

I thought it was scary, too, lp. I had nightmares. I spoke to Jimmy yesterday and he is doing well. He enjoyed doing the interview, as did I. Thanks.
Thanks Rob for these interviews. I love these old films and myself am pushing 60 now remember so many of these stars from my childhood, I long for this type of content to be recreated today. Thanks to you , my kids and grandkids are introduced to these actors and get to see them now as well as watching the old films and shows with me . We're losing so many , as life dictates, but you are preserving what I hope will be re-shared for generations to come. I foolishly wished for many of these old guys to return one last time to the big screen, but know it isn't likely possible in their advanced years. Please keep doing what you do , even if one on one without audiences if necessary. The fruits of your labor will outlive us all. We love you for it as much as you love doing it. ♥️ thank you again.

Rob, Throughly enjoyable entertainment touching on the many wonderful personalities, especially my fav, Joel McCrea and a bit of social commentary thrown in for good measure. Cowboys and Indians, good vs.evil, right and wrong for goodness sake! Hoppy and The Lone Ranger filled in when my parents were busy washing cloths, Ironing cloths and preparing meals. I turned out just fine, thank you! Happy Trails......
Another winner, Rob! I've seen this kid many times but never took note of his name. You've matched things up nicely for me. Thank you!
Wow, I remember the cap gun sets! I had a Hopalong Cassisy 2 gun set! It is probably why I was interested in collecting SAAs and Single Action Shooting Society. It was an extension of the fun of my youth!
This was truly so enjoyable, just loved listening to this Joel McCrea telling us about things that happened behind the scenes, etc, how that we have lost so much from the good guys verses the bad guys. The character of America that once we all chairish so much at one time it seems is gone... Thanks Rob Word for this interview.

A very insightful interview. What wonderful career. Thank you Jimmy and Rob for the great memories.
This was another very fine episode of AWOW here, Rob. Jimmy's recall was excellent and he was always very positive about the productions he was in and especially his co-actors overall. And yes, his thoughts about things not only being better in that era, but also things made more sense. That sense or common sense if you will is really lacking these days.
Great stuff Rob brings back great memories. Jimmy seemed like a natural I guess that's why they kept hiring. I will have to check out the lew ayres and Teresa Wright movie with Jimmy looks like a good one

Another good one, Rob. "Invaders from Mars" is a favorite and I have if on DVD. It was a strange movie, but had one checking one's parents for signs on the back of the neck. They had a similar plot in the first season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" but they never followed up on it. It is nice to hear about other films that might be interesting. I really like the beautiful Teresa Wright from "Mrs. Miniver," "The Best Years of Our Lives," and "The Pride of the Yankees." It looks like an interesting film, but clip only showed that Lew Ayers cannot sing. 👍👍😀😄
Thank you
Thank you Rob! I remember messaging you about Jimmy Hunt during lockdown, glad to see this interview in full!! Weirdly enough this morning I put the tv on and The Pathfinder was on with Helena Carter. Usually I wouldn't bother watching, but as I was hungover I kept it on as she was in it and I was thinking about Invaders from Mars. Crazy that this was uploaded the very same day! The Lone Hand is a personal favourite of mine too :)

TO me the differences are the level of education and the then predictability of a good future that our fathers who fought in war promised us. IMHO, we OLDER PEOPLE have let our children and grandchildren down by allowing the opportunities of a good education from occurring with no likelihood of getting a JOB. THE RICH DIDN'T HAVE TO SEND OUR JOBS & good UNION WAGES & great Health Care to other countries. .... AND WE HAVE MISLEAD Ourselves into believing by saving the WEALTHY that somehow we save ourselves. THE BAD GUYS HAVE WON to many Battles in the last 50 years & THE PEOPLE (we little guys) need to act like a HOP-A-LONG Movie and clean the BAD GUYS OUT of town! just my opinion ;) lol

Wonderful Interview Rob. Why do you keep stopping these stars after a certain time. I believe most of them just enjoy telling stories of their past as we do just listening. Have a part two or three if you think that the interview is too long for KZread. Question, Do you know all of these names and movies off the top of your head which these actors and show biz people were in and played with,, that they have forgotten and you remind them of. Do you prep before the interviews. If so tell us how you prep, do you just use IMBD or other sources. Thanks again.

Thanks for your comments, Edward. Hope the following answers your questions. I love film and have a pretty good memory. I have an extensive library and do my own research. IMDB helps, too. Then I cram the night before like I’m taking a college exam for the interviews. Unlike network talk shows who usually give guests 6-8 minutes to plug a current film or book, I try and keep the conversation focused on films and TV shows we might consider classics, mostly westerns, of course, so that our past interviews are not dated. Timeless, I like to think. Given our time constraints, I keep our conversations going as long as possible. As we’ve grown, the length of the interviews has gotten much longer. It all depends on how many of my invited guests show up for the two hour block of time we have in the Autry’s Wells Fargo theater. If 5 people show up, that equates to a shorter interview than if only 3 arrive. Our exceptional crew, Mike Clark, Bret Hampton, Richard Ragon, RJ and a couple PA’s arrive to set up at 8am for taping between interviews between 11am and 1pm. When finished, we strike cameras, lighting, audio equipment and our props and set and are gone by 3pm. Nine years ago, when we began broadcasting A WORD ON WESTERNS episodes on KZread (January 2014), most people viewed them on their iPhones, so we were advised to keep the segments at the then acceptable length of 3-4 minutes, excerpted from the 15-20-minute original live interviews that took place in The Autry’s coffee shop/restaurant. We only had an hour to shoot back then so when 5 guests showed up, obviously, the interviews had to be shorter to accommodate those guests who took time out of their schedules to join me. Each episode was edited to my guest discussing a single topic. That often meant 3 short AWOW episodes from one guest taken from a 12 minute interview as we talked about several different films. It was taking about 20 hours per week to book talent, crews, do a rough cut, gather clips and illustrations to produce and edit these shorter episodes. After 9 years, times and viewer acceptance for longer segments (and large screens) is now possible, so we began extending episodes by using the interviews in their entirety. We have more than tripled the running times of our original episodes from 2014 when we started. But now production time for my “hobby” is 45-50 hours a week, 52 weeks out of the year! I'm continuing to launch a new episode every Sunday and, during the Covid shutdown, we added a Friday night western. The pressure of my (self-imposed) schedule, after 9 years now and counting, is relentless. We do tape a two-hour interview show with multiple guests every other month at The Autry Museum in Los Angeles. It’s free and open to the public, where the individual, live, interviews can be seen. They now run as long as 25 minutes each. If only one or two guests show up, I can do longer interviews but the audience is a little disappointed with the “no shows.” I like the longer interviews but, that may mean only having enough content to post new shows once a month. The short episodes made it possible to post weekly. Now beginning our 10th year, we are the only weekly series to even attempt documenting western film history with interviews of the filmmakers. I am very grateful for all of the guests who have appeared and of our very astute and western film loving viewers who give me the energy to continue with their amazing comments and loyalty. Thanks for watching, sharing, and subscribing to our history of western films and TV. Until they cart me off to Boot Hill, there are more new episodes coming every week! Adios, and thanks again.

@@AWordonWesterns @A Word on Westerns Yes i guess that I've always underestimated the time and money that it takes to create quality entertainment. I hope that you and Rob Jr. can make enough on KZread to keep this show going. I'll be honest I don't watch every movie completely though but give you a thumbs up every time regardless. I have watched all of your interviews on KZread, sometimes twice. My son walked in while I was typing this response and was surprised as I at the time that you took to write such a complete lengthy response. My 2 favorite TV westerns were the Hugh O'Brian Wyatt Earp and Have Gun. Anyone still around that was connected with those shows that can come in. I consider the 30 year old 1993 Tombstone to be a classic now. Will any of them come in maybe they can say somethings about the other cast members including Harry Carey Jr. Again thanks for the response. See you Friday. Ed
