On Location Bridal Portraits with Off Camera Flash

Join me during this workshop in London where we work on location with off camera flash during a bridal portrait session. In this tutorial, I will show you how quixkly and easily you can use flash to create extremely unique looking portraits for your wedding clients and wedding portfolio.
We used the Westcott FJ200 // bit.ly/3DtuDYr for this shoot. Its the perfect flash for travel. Lightweight and powerful.

    That is the way to set your camera and light to do this. I see some many trying to change both background and foreground exposures at the same time.

    Those are great pictures - very nice. I am a bit confused though, about what you said about lowering the ISO will make your flash NOT work so hard. When you lower your ISO you reduce the sensitivity to light, both ambient and flash, which will in fact require your flash to work harder.

    remember - we are talking specifically in high speed sync... the higher your ISO the faster your shutter speed. which pushes the camera into high speed sync - which makes your flash work MUCH harder to get the light there by firing smaller bursts of light. by lowering ISO... you are also lowering your shutter speed and thus getting it below HSS levels. does that make sense?

    Okay, I am a wee bit confused. First you said you would shoot it at 2 stops under exposed. Then at 1:58 you said 3 stops at 3200 shutter speed (same as two stops). Then when you photographed the girl, the settings were shutter speed was 6400. Please clarify.

    no worries at all. :) the main key to understand is im not shooing in manual mode. so the settings are going to drift as the light changes. if you watch the video you can see the sun coming in and out just on me while im talking. this is EXACTLY why i like shooting in aperture mode because its using the cameras metering system to adjust settings (shutter speed) vs me having to manually adjust or to keep metering. you cant work fast that way. so thats why the shutter is all over the place. im using the in camera exposure compensation to accomplish this vs manually adjusting the exposure triangle. does that make more sense? let me know.

    great tuto. why aperture priority which is going to change the speed and iso ? i thought manual was recommended. how do you evaluate the flash power vs distance for first try ?

  • @SalCincotta1

    @SalCincotta1

    i find aperture to be the most efficient way to shoot. iso does not change during aperture priority. it changes shutter speed. think about the way you work... im not shooting sports or action... so do i care if the shutter is 1/4000 or 1/1000?? usually no. the thing we care about most is depth of field... thats really the creative setting. so aperture mode allows me to focus on that. manual mode however... the camera will not adjust anything... which would be disastrous shooting outdoors in changing lighting conditions. you would either have to stop every 2 min to re-meter... OR... you would end up with pictures that have exposure all over the place making more work in post production. as for flash power vs distance... for me... i start at a power of 5 and put the light 6-10 feet away. thats my baseline and then i adjust from there. hth... great questions!

    Thank you ! I agree with you for aperture priority in natural light. I use a7rv and aperture priority min ss=1/250 iso auto and change expo comp. But as soon as i connect godox v1s on or off camera i cannot predict how camera measure exposure of face, background and change ss and iso. This is why i need to switch to manual, select aperture for dof, change ss to expose sky,... iso 100-800 max and try several flash power for face.

    If there is no any close object behind model and we need softer light or if shooting from below up with ultrawide lens (close vail shots) we can use translucent umbrella (80-100cm) for lighter setup?

    great question... in all honesty... ive been shooting this way for over 10 years... and not just shooting, but printing my work as well... and i gotta be honest... ive never seen a loss of DR. I MEAN... AT ALL. Now, perhaps at a senor/science/digital level... someone might find something... but to the visible eye... i call BS on it. especially shooting raw. NOW... I will say... ive seen the opposite... when you get to the higher range of these cameras... ISO 1600 3200 6400... etc.. there is a definite loss of DR.
