    I feel like that's something a lot of people who play this game don't take into account. They only see the events of the current game without realizing that this is something he's been dealing with for four whole years, and since he was 12. The player only decides what path to take and how Sunny's story will end (though the True Ending is THE canon ending, which honestly shows how resilient Sunny is). Seriously, kid deserves more credit.

They say ego will always reborn and reform but somehow he gets worse 2. Or stabbing himself just a snapping out of dreamworld technique 3. Maybe just self hatred out of guilt Omori isn't completely separate from sunny at least until basil fight but sunny progressively lose control on it anyway and cant prevent it from manifesting itself. Omori is never separate from Sunny, not even in the finale. Omori is as much of Sunny as Sunny is Omori. when a brain, especially a young one, goes through high amounts of distress, it has a chance to section off parts of the brain functionality so that they can function. in this case, Sunny doesn’t fully recall what’s happened, or fully accepted it, but Omori knows. they’re not two spirits inhabiting a mind, when it comes to dissociative disorders like this it gets complicated but just imagine two different settings in ur brain with different mannerisms and emotions/memories. Omori holds those traumatic memories so Sunny doesn’t have to face them, until he does, and the two integrate fully into each other. as for the stabbing, it might just be a desire of his or a method he’s used to escape his subconscious before. in dreams and similar subconscious states, large and intense actions can snap you out of it

    I think Black Space 2 being extra fucked up is because Sunny missed his chance to recover his memories and admit the truth, and is doomed to forever see himself as a monster and not even consciously know why. Black Space goes unchecked, the Black Lightbulb is never destroyed, and it just grows even more powerful and unstable. So uh, if this is getting you a little down just remember that he's taken a big first step toward dealing with all this and quelling the turbulence in his heart in the good ending.

    Sunny knows why. The crux of this game is a commentary on escapism, not amnesia. He would not have these fears and consistant triggers related to Mari if he literally didn't remember the incident. Sunny is a self-proclaimed liar. He knows exactly what he's doing,that his actions are wrong, and that he feels horribly guilty. He lied to his friends to protect himself and he lies to himself to protect what's left of his sense of self-worth. Saying Sunny is amnesiac strips away the catharsis of him choosing to break the Black Lightbulb and face his trauma. It strips the importance from the Something encounters if its just "oooh big scary eyeball monster" to Sunny and nothing else. It strips him of agency and moral complexity when we are told that Sunny chose to lie about Mari's death for 4 years and has to build up the courage to tell the truth. It also ignores that Headspace is, first and foremost, a story that Sunny tells himself on the daily to distract from his traumatic memories. Omori is his authorial avatar bcs Sunny doesn't feel worthy of imdulging in his childhood memories and wants to pretend (temporarily) that nothing bad happened. Again, escspism not amnesia

  • @ElectricBarrier

    @ElectricBarrier

    3 күн бұрын

    @@jthecryptid I understand your reason for believing this, and we could chalk it up to a difference in interpretation, but since you're saying this like I am simply wrong and not interpreting it differently, I'll lay down some things as counter-evidence. I'll start off by saying Sunny's simply not that morally complex of a character, though certainly more than you're thinking if what I'm saying is right. Regardless, he still has the potential to just bail as soon as he does remember and repress the memory again. You can do an ending where he recovers the memory and then just immediately goes home, sleeps, and leaves without telling anyone anything or trying to help Basil. He can give in to cowardice and not work up any courage after he's recovered the repressed memory. Second I'll say that I do think it would be very interesting if that's what it was doing, I personally would still sympathize with Sunny if that were the case, though I know many would not(because there are some who do not believe this is the case, like you, and hate the character). I just don't think it is the case. Third I'd like to say I think the game is still quite metaphorical for what you're saying, or rather in some ways yes and some ways no. In the game's real world he is someone recovering a repressed memory and then telling people the truth that he had involuntarily kept hidden, in his mind that's not quite the case. Sunny when he is in his mind represents the part of him who wants to remember, fighting against the part of him that does not. There, it is indeed what you're suggesting, and Omori keeps the part that does know what he is doing and feels it's wrong in check. That is literal in his mind, it's a metaphor without. In a sense because we see both the distinction becomes meaningless, and the story is indeed about that, but subtextually. In text, he's just repressed memories. He subconsciously remembers it but not consciously, hence why he has those fears and triggers you mentioned. Now, for one, that's the entire symbolism of the Black Lightbulb. What possible other reason is there for that specific imagery if not representative of a repressed memory? If it weren't for all the other details, you could just chalk it up to "it looked cool" but with the rest of the context it's hard to see it as anything else. A light bulb represents having a thought, an inverse light bulb represents the opposite. Next is the fact the achievement/trophy for finishing the rematches against the fear bosses in the hikikomori route is called "Repressed", because that's what Omori does. It's the only time the game just flat out tells you, but it expects you to piece it together. Why, doing this even causes Mari's piano to disappear, making it clear he's repressed even the memory of her having played piano. This kind of thing happens in the normal route too. The door to the closet where the broken violin is kept can't be seen, but interacting with where it would be produces the text box "There is nothing there." This also happens after Sunny sees Basil's corpse in one of the variations of the "neutral" ending. A clear cut example of him repressing a memory on-screen. Further evidence is just how much dissociative issues Sunny has. One comes from the dummied out Black Space photo album text so it can't be too reliable, but he does begin to dissociate through the whole thing which is how he allows Basil to carry out his awful plan, he just sort of goes along with it in a fugue as he retreats into White Space. An example kept in the game is a similar fugue as seen in the Omori VHS tape in one of the Black Space fissures left behind by the keyboard keys. He stares blankly at Mari's piano and the word "Omori" on it before his eyes widen a bit. We also learn from Daddy Long Legs that originally, Headspace was less cohesive and Sunny traversed it as himself, but when he came across Black Space, the area where all his negative feelings and memories lay, he was horrified and created Omori to protect himself from it, using him and his "guardians"(Abbi, Humphrey, and the Big Yellow Cat) to create a more concrete form for Headspace and put Black Space deep below it. Black Space seems to be the repression repository, with the most deeply repressed things deepest in, watched directly over by Omori. Omori serves as the represser and guardian of the truth, it's just clear that he does when you look at everything. Another piece of evidence is just how the truth is shown, all the images are from Basil's perspective, leading many to erroneously believe they were photos he actually took lol. But they're from his perspective because they are his memories, not Sunny's. It's not even really correct to say SUNNY recovered his repressed memory, but more that he was reminded of it by someone who fully recalled the event. But this one is, I suppose, up to interpretation. The thing I see as making this possible is the White Egret Orchid connecting their minds as Sunny dreams, "My Thoughts will Follow you into Your Dreams." If you deny any supernatural elements in Omori, then this is a moot argument and the images being from Basil's perspective is inexplicable or has some other strange explanation I haven't thought of. Headspace serves as a way to continue to not remember the painful truth he doesn't wish to, by submersing himself in the fantasy he can further distance himself from that reality. I'm not ignoring anything about what Headspace is, it's function is to further facilitate that. It completely works regardless of which one of us is right. I'd also just like to say such a thing is quite common in horror and thrillers. Omori is almost assuredly inspired by Silent Hill 2, in which it's protagonist also repressed the horrible thing he did. Much of it would not make sense if that were not the case, though it's never explicitly stated there either. Because it's also somewhat metaphorical. This being the case doesn't detract from anything in the narrative, not his guilt and not his choice to try to atone, and I don't think it detracts from Sunny's either. In the end it is still metaphorical for all that; you the player are unlikely to ever kill your sister and repress the memory. You ARE likely to do something wrong, lie about and hide from it, and become increasingly guilty but not come clean for fear of the ramifications. That's the undercurrent of Sunny's story and what is going on in his head, it is a battle with his own cowardice that prevents him from remembering to protect himself from the consequences, fighting that so he may in fact BE courageous and accept them regardless and hope and work for a better outcome. I don't think that not literally being what happened really devalues that. Though if it was more literal it would also be interesting, I just don't think it is. The distinction becomes meaningless because that's the kind of story Omori is, anyway, Sunny is effectively still a coward who is lying to his friends and feeling guilty about it but gaining the courage to rectify this because that's how the story carries itself. It's just that kind of art piece. If anything, debating over whether or not he did repress his memories is kind of pointless if you're not trying to argue Sunny is a bad person who doesn't deserve forgiveness because he remembered what happened and was just lying, but hey man you asked for it! The crux of the game can be about escapism, though I don't think it is and I think this interpretation is very trite, and still be literally about (dissociative) amnesia. Much like how Silent Hill 2's crux wasn't that either despite being about that in the literal sense.

    Imagine dreaming waking up to your dead sister’s distorted face staring at you from the ceiling. You run out and find yourself in this place, you run around the maze, reliving your childhood traumas until you want out. So you stab yourself with a knife, hoping to end it all, only to wake up in the same room with your dead sister’s distorted face staring at you again… and repeat. This is like that creepy childhood dream where we keep waking up into the same dream over and over again (happened to me once - got up and went to school only to realize its all a dream x5), but much much worse.

    i don’t believe it’s intended to be impossible. all forms of black space are the true memories that Sunny has accidentally suppressed due to trauma. the first part of Black Space is confusing, unsettling, creepy, cryptic, etc. Sunny’s brain has been repressing for so long that the memories are jumbled and distorted, and extremely overwhelming to remember all at once. The deeper sections of black space like here, or like when fighting Abbi, show instead what happens when you continue to fight the repressed memories. they swell into unrecognizable monstrosities that feel so extremely dreadful and hopeless, yet you can still see the inklings of truth scattered around. however it’s so detrimental in this state of mind that the truth may be overshadowed by the emotions that rise up from it instead, making it even more difficult to heal.

    Words cannot describe how real this is. Sunny can’t even decide what he is anymore. He’s just an afraid child, who’s afraid of his own reflection. He sees himself as both a monster, and the weakest, most broken, most pathetic person. But underneath all that, he’s so broken, and betrayed by himself for doing what he had done. It’s why Omori saying, “KEL loved her and you killed her.” “AUBREY loved her and you killed her.” “HERO loved her and you killed her.” “BASIL loved her and you killed her.” “MARI loved you and you killed her.” Notice how each time Omori speaks, he brings up the person who’s been more permanently scarred by what happened, but in the end, he says something that stings like a blade in your chest. “You loved her, and you killed her.” Sunny saying this is so truly painful, because he betrayed himself. He betrayed everything in his entirety, his life, his future, his friend’s futures, everything, but the only person who he knows could never forgive him is himself. “YOU loved her, and YOU killed her.” You had EVERYTHING, and you destroyed it all. That’s why this picture is so fucked up, because words cannot describe the feelings Sunny feels towards himself fully. That’s why his self image has become so contorted, so misguided, so unrecognizable, that he doesn’t even know if he’s a monster, or someone that monster had destroyed. It’s an embodiment of his grief as an image.

Just have it pool around him for a while, maybe have text appear sometimes like "It's not working." "You can't wake up." "You can't wake up." "You can't wake up." "You will never wake up." And then appear in that bed, in your dream, slightly confirming that... you didn't even wake up. You're literally still there.

    I truly love Omori, the art, music, and all of its tones. as someone who’s mental illness has been more than the socially acceptable amount my whole life, and have had to grow and push passed it by myself, these representations are so beautifully designed. some symbolic, some literal, i can relate to a lot of Omoris depictions of trauma responses. it all really hit me when they went to Deeper Well. such a creative way to describe memories so dissociated within your brain that they seem like nonsense in a stressful and suffocating world submerged by an ocean of confusion. then Humphrey and his song HCL:H20 being a clever reference, as that compound “dissociates”. White Space as the default subconscious space, and Black Space representing the garbled and distorted reality that has been unintentionally suppressed for so long that it’s overwhelming and makes you not want to even digest it all. not to end on a negative note but it seems like the fandom kind of either glosses over the mental health part, or talks abt it way too much in a way that seems a bit glorifying. living with schizoaffective and bpd as my two major disorders my whole life has changed my entire world, some good and mostly worse. i don’t think it’s fun to want to go thru something like Sunny did, and i think it is ok to let this game be grounded in reality and delve into the (intentional or not) symbolism for trauma responses and dissociative matters. it’s a bit sad that beautiful games come out like this and always run the risk of negativity and toxic positivity, such as children or even adults wishing (and acting) like they have similar issues. that’s the end of my long schizo rant lmfao

    The guilt that he endured over himself snapping and pushing Mari down the stairs by mistake is something that he'll have to deal with for the rest of his life. I'm not sure if this is on "Omori Route" or not, but reading the comments, this only appears on the console (Nintendo Switch?) version of the game. The crying symbolizes that guilt, so much so he wants to punish himself for what he did, having remorse, and a desire of deserving death for what he did. I can understand why he's afraid to walk out of his house, especially to face his friends, as Mari was their friend, and had a positive impact in their lives until that fateful day...
