Omo Learns to Chuff! Check in With Our 9-month-old Hippo Calf

Ойын-сауық

Our little hippo calf, Omo, is 9 months old, and he's outgrown the baby-proofing in his indoor training area! He's nursing less and eating more solid foods, which are helping him grow up big and strong. He recently weighed in at 435 pounds. That may seem huge to us, but Omo is still just a baby. He lives full-time with his mom, Zambezi, and has been learning to communicate with his aunt, Kasai, and dad, Biko, who live separately in the same habitat, by making little 'chuffing' noises. Keepers have seen Omo's personality continue to get bigger, along with the rest of him. They say he doesn't just enter a room; he explodes into it. Check in with Omo, his mom, Zambezi, and Water's Edge: Africa lead keeper, Philip, in this video update.

Bad News! Omo was inbred to an aunt-nephew mating. Zambazi's sister Binti gave birth to Biko in 2002.

Hi Danielle. Omo is the result of a Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation between his parents, Biko and Zambezi. SSPs track detailed genetics for the populations of animals in human care, and make recommendations based on the best genetic pairings available. Biko received a breeding recommendation with both Zambezi and her sister, Kasai, as desirable genetic pairings to produce healthy offspring. If you’d like to learn more about SSPs, and breeding within AZA-accredited facilities, please visit www.aza.org/species-survival-plan-programs?locale=en.

Omo being 435 pounds at the age of 9 months is bad. Omo is even smaller than Fiona at the Cincinnati Zoo at 9 months, who is now 5 and just 2000 pounds. Hopefully Omo is not going to be a "little boy" hippo at an adult age.

Thanks for loving hippos! The average weight for a 9-month-old hippo is between 400 and 500 pounds, which makes Omo’s 435 pounds a very healthy weight for his age! Like other animals, each individual grows at their own rate, and some can grow faster than others. Although we do not have firsthand background on Fiona’s upbringing, it is possible that her specialized circumstances from birth, or her need to rely on hand-feeding from keepers, resulted in her unique growth rate. Omo’s dad, Biko, is on the small side for male hippos, so there is a chance Omo will be smaller when he is fully grown.

НАДО ЖЕ, такие крупные животные и травоядные. Сколько же им корма в день нужно?
