Really illuminating introduction highlighting how much lack of knowledge there is in non Muslim communities considering Islam/Muslims have been in the media discourse for over 15 years. Repeatedly studies have shown religiosity is a protective factor against extremism. It saddens me how ignorant people can be but such is the world we live in. This is why these lectures/books are so important to challenge preconceptions and ideas. Need to step outside of our boxes with open hearts (Muslims also!!).

Beautiful speech! Mr role model says: If you do not have a brief system, at least be a free man, free from selfishness, prejudice, arrogance and bigotry! Just remember that religions were send to make us more human. If your religion makes you less human then give it up and seek a better one!

I adore Omid Safi - a compassionate, warm human being who has become that because he's a person of faith. But I wish I could ask him some questions: These days Christians are undergoing rigorous questioning by atheists about our faith, and there is no way today's scientific minds will accept myths as proof that Jesus was the person we proclaim he is. We have, however, very good reason to believe that most of what is said about him in the gospels can be verified, because of early traditions and sources like the gospel of Mark which is said to have been written as soon as about 30 years after the crucifixion. According to historians this is too early for myths to have developed. From what I've heard, the time lapse between Muhammad's death and the writing of the hadith is much longer, so myths almost certainly would have developed. To me it seems that the crucial and pretty things said here by prof. Safi about the Prophet are mostly based on myths.... And then I have read many things about him that are quite certain, like his multiple wives and the battles and beheadings he got into, which make it incredibly hard for me to accept the pedestal Muslims tend to place him on....

One can create any mythological idea in no time, so 30 yrs is plenty of time to get all kinds of funny ideas in circulation and acceptance by a mostly illiterate and naive public of the time. All religions have their mythologies and even the history of scientific ideas has its own mythologies constructed by European powers at their height of colonial triumph in the 19th century. I should know as I am not only a practising scientist but also very much into the history of science. Fortunately, there are plenty of sceptical historians of science who have come to doubt these mythologies of the way science developed over two millennia and many in the field are active in investigating and exploding these myths, but the same is regrettably not so for history of religions that will find ready acceptance amongst believers. The rest of your argument is nothing more than a biased rant stemming from huge ignorance on the subject!

For an ancient manuscript that is amazingly early... The time gap between the event and the written source is 400 years for Homer's Iliad, 900 years for Caesar's Gallic Wars, 1300 years for Plato's Tetrologies, and you pull up your nose for a time gap of 30 years? And some of the Christian creeds, like the one found in Corinthians 15, are even earlier. The 1 Cor. 15 one is said to have developed within 3 - 5 years after the crucifixion of Christ. A 30 years time span is considered more reliable because eye witnesses would still have been around to criticize what was written.

Mohammad is obliged to lead common believers to heaven, Moustafa is for elect to take them to God, Ahmad is for the few, who vanish in ETERNAL.

Brother islam doesn't need anymore colorful way to explain. Islam is already shinning .

I really appreciated this lecture, though I really wish he didnt share those white-washed Persian depictions od the Prophet. It might seem petty, but the fact that the Muslims tradition sort of gets things right by depicting the Prophets of Shem as dark brown-skinned people (mostly much darker than Omid himself), and we have so much scholarship to support this, and we're just at rhe tip of the iceberg in terms rediscovering them througg genetics, just makes it a tragedy not to put it foward to an audienxe who assumed the Prophets were just olive skinned versions of Europeans, because this is what most of the current people of the regions look like. Most of Bani Israel fled to Africa, not Europe and Asia. Their descendents at large now practice Islam and Christinaity, while only a minority maintain a Jewish/Hebrew identit anymore, though they are still brown as al-Tabarri described the sons of Shem and Ham. Perhaps Muhammad was an exception, but many of his family memebers, including his uncle and cousin Ali Ibn Abu Talib was a dark brown/black ("adam") skinned Arab. InshaAllah in the end times, the full truth will be revelaed. True Muslims understand that race doesn't make one superior in the eyes of the Most High, though when race is purposefully hidden, it becomes necessary to speak up. Perhaps Omid isn't a racist, but those depictions od Muhammad were clearly made by people with strong biases. The Prophet's family were slandered for their dark skin under the Abbasids. You can read that in al-Rumi: "You insulted (the family of the Prophet) because of their blackness (bi-l-sawad), while there are still deep black, pure-blooded Arabs (al-arab al-amhad akhdar ad’aj). However, you are white - the Romans (Byzantines) have embellished your faces with their color. The color of the family of Hashim was not a bodily defect (‘aha). (Abu al-Faraj al-Isbahani, Maqatil al-talibiyyin, ed. Ahmad Saqr (Cairo: Dar Ihya" al-Kutub al-Arabiya, 1949) I really wish he didn't even get into the NOI question, unless he was ready to unpack the history of African Islam, being that the first American Muslims were Africans, and unless he was ready to get into the details of how exactly they developed their theology. As unorthodox as it appears on the surface, it borrows from many Muslim traditions, even the fringe segments (ghulat shi'a, and hanbali anthromorphasim), as well as "unorthodox" (though less fringe) Ahmadis (the sect Walid Muhammad perhaps belonged to). Also, when he speaks of allowing the people of the religions to define the religion themselves it struck a chord with me. Though many Muslims aren't on the same page with myself, nor Dr. Safi, and perhaps this is the issue. InshaAllah we will one day come together as a community who rejects all injustice, and who tends our the "Salah" in purity and dedication to our Lord and Hir creation.

I'm not a believer but I'm starting to like Islam because of his lectures, but comments from a self righteous Muslim like you scares me. Maybe majority of Muslim are indeed judgemental and self righteous.
