"Radar Love" is a song by the Dutch rock band Golden Earring. The single version of "Radar Love" reached #9 on the Record World chart, #10 on Cash Box, and #13 on Billboard in the United States. It hit the Top 10 in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada,[5] Australia, Germany, and Spain. According to Rustyn Rose at Metalholic, the song "is a rock masterpiece, from its hooky chugging bassline, to its simple but unmistakable riffs, to its catchy anthemesque chorus. Even the jam which rides the song out is note for note classic." The song has been chosen by many magazines and websites as a Top 10 driving song, often ranking in the top three. It was chosen as the best radio song by readers of the Washington Post in November 2001. It was the #1 driving song in Australia (Australian Musician Magazine, November 2005), beating two AC/DC songs; and in Canada (BBC Canada, March 2006).[10] In 2011 it received a vast number of votes as the "Ultimate Driving Song" in a poll on PlanetRock and "finished well ahead of its nearest rival, Deep Purple's Highway Star."[11] The bassline, guitar improv, and drum solo riff was used in the late 1970s and early 1980s as part of the opening credits and theme to the long running Australian current affairs programme Four Corners produced by ABC before it segues into the official theme, Robert Maxwell's "Lost Patrol". Golden Earring is a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as The Tornados. They achieved worldwide fame with their international hit songs "Radar Love" in 1973, which went to number one on the Dutch chart, reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, and went to number thirteen on the United States chart, "Twilight Zone" in 1982, and "When the Lady Smiles" in 1984. During their career they had nearly 30 top-ten singles on the Dutch charts and released 25 studio albums. The band went through a number of early line-up changes until settling on a stable line-up in 1970, consisting of Rinus Gerritsen (bass and keyboards), George Kooymans (vocals and guitar), Barry Hay (lead vocals, guitar, flute and saxophone), and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums and percussion), which remained unchanged until the band broke up in 2021 following the diagnosis of Kooymans with ALS. A number of other musicians also appeared in short stints with the band over its history as well. Thats all folks.............grtz Carl

@@VinE83656 you are absolutely right. For sound reasons they would use the studio recordings and have the bands lip sync to them. Which allowed the band to get high before the show more than usual. If you watch carefully you can see they forget what chords/notes they are playing on the guitar and the drummer is always drumming to a different beat.

Keep in mind that modern late night show performances still don't have much of any audience energy, you typically just get the pop at the end when the band finishes the song. And it's still awkward too in many of those live performances.

Great Reaction Guys.Mixed feelings for me. I saw my best mate socially over 3,000 times as we grew up in S E London together and we had identical interests and we used to go each week in 1971-1974 to see the Top Groups of that time including Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and Supertramp and he was really excited that this Dutch Group were playing at our favourite venue and for once he left ME to make the arrangements on this Sunday. As we got near we wondered where the 3,000 queue was and got to the entrance only to see that they played the PREVIOUS WEEK and I got the dates wrong. It was our only ever argument in knowing him for 49 years and we never did see Golden Earring :(

Golden Earring was HUGE in Europe but only big here in America. They were from The Netherlands and were excellent live. So good in fact, very few American bands wanted them for an "Opening Act". They were usually blowing the main act off the stage each and every night. Just ask Santana, Ted Nugent and the Doobie Brothers.

There is no way they'd blow Ted Nugent off the stage especially in the 70s . I saw Ted about 4-5 years ago after he had knee surgery and he was still jamming harder than guys half his age and still moving all over the stage. Ted was never afraid to have great opening acts . He knew he had "his" audience .

@@XA351GT I agree with most of what you stated. I saw Ted Nugent 3 times back in the mid 70's twice when Derek St. Holmes was still in the band once without him. Then I saw Ted in the 80's once and 90's once. Ted has always been a good performer, hardcore "true to his music" type of guy. Not a "sellout" that's for sure. Although in 1978 at South Phillys Spectrum, Ted and his band were struggling. If I remember correctly, the guy who took Derek's place was sick coming in and was really sick that night playing. Ted was great as always. One of the only times I've seen a Philadelphia concert crowd leave in droves before the show ended. Wasn't Ted's fault, hey a bandmate was sick as a dog. I want too say he apologized but I really don't remember. I'll bet you a case of his jerky that if Ted remembers that night, he will admit Golden Earring blew him off the stage.

"Disco" was a popular TV show in Germany in the 70th. The audience in the studio was told from the TV direction to be quiet during TV coverage to ensure best sound pleasure for the TV viewers! The technique standard in the 70th was a little bit poorer than today. Imagine the audience would dance and clap their hands the sound level of this noise would disturb the sound of the bands. That is the reason why the crowd in the studio looks so dead! You can notice this audiences reaction in a lot of of old clips taken in the 70th for example Hey Joe from Jimi Hendrix, Child In Time from Deep Purple etc. The stage for a band in a TV studio was very tiny but the audience was very close to the artists so a noise level from the crowd would kill the sound of the artists. The audience in the studios kept silence because they were happy and glad to watch and listen their idols without paying money for it! The clip is a cut from the complete TV performance in a Studio in 1973. At that time the sound in German TV was only in mono! The stereo sound has been remastered to the clip today that's also the reason why the sound of the singer does not fit to his lips.

You should look up this utube vid: Wet Willie Live in Macon 1973 macon ga has been a major hub for many southern blues/ rock bands since the 1960s as a 60 yr old, the seventies were in my opinion the best for some of the best rock bands of all time!!! Blues originated from the plantation life and it morphed into rock and roll! The old saying: blues had a baby and they called it rock and roll! Many of your seventies rock bands remade blues songs of the old great black blues artists!! It never dies!!!

I'm British and this was one of my favourite songs in 1973. In the video they were German teenagers attending a tv show. They had strict upbringing and weren't comfortable about letting themselves go, especially on camera, but they will have enjoyed it. Different now.

This is one of the first songs I remember from when I started listening to rock music back in my early teens. It was on Radio Luxemburg, a radio station that only lightly elderly Europeans will remember. It's almost 50 years ago now, funny how time slips away. Anyway, great to take a stroll down memory lane with you, and see your reactions. You two really love music, you seem very open to different genres and styles. And if you want to try another band from Holland, check out the song Hocus Pocus by the band Focus.

Golden Earring were a Dutch band who were formed in 1961 and only announced they ere retiring a few months ago. They are primarily known in the US for this song and Twilight Zone, from about 1981. The singer's name is Barry Hay.

The video is a live performance on a german tv-show dedicated to showing new music. It was called "disco" and ran from '71 to '82. The audience isn't jamming because they are 70s german people probably paralysed because they are on television. All of them want to show their best behaviour just in case Uncle Fritz and Aunt Trudi are watching at home. Also I guess it was considered rude to 'disturb' an artists performance back then. Clapping and cheering is for after the performance. :)

Golden Earring are a Dutch (Holland) band the only one I know of that reached worldwide appeal. They are or were the longest working continuously active band with the core being formed all the way back in 1961. They had to call it a career earlier this year when one of them members was diagnosed with a disease. but a 60 year career is pretty damn impressive. George Kooymans on guitar 1961-2021, Rinus Gerritsen Bass 1961-2021, Barry Hay Vocal, guitar 1967-2021, Cesar Zuiderwijk Drums 1970-2021.

Absolute banger this one! Golden Earring were one of the Netherlands’ greatest bands of all, who never really made it internationally apart from this song & “Twilight Zone”. Deserved a far greater career abroad. Band members were: -Barry Hay (lead singer) -George Kooymans (guitarist) -Rinus Gerritsen (bass & keyboards) -Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums) Personally the drums on this song are just on another galaxy. Zuiderwijk is a drumming god who too rarely gets his dues in comparison to the other legendary drummers of the game.

This is from a German TV show and during those days the audience was either just sitting there like zombies or they were clapping to the wrong beat. This particular audience went for the zombie option. The ironic thing is, the best driving song ever comes from a country that you can cross in two and a half hours by car.
