Omega Planet Ocean 2500 VS 8900 Master Chronometer Comparison 4K

In this video I compare two Planet Ocean models
2500 Liquidmetal Limited Edition Ref: 222.30.42.20.01.001
Master Chronometer 8900 Ref: 215.30.44.21.03.001
The Planet Ocean has been part of the Omega catalogue since 2005 and has become a much liked and respected watch.
I look at the differences between the case, dial, bezel, movement, lume, crown, HE valve, bracelet and clasp.

Great video. For me I just picked up the PO in black 8900 movement, 43.5 and love it. I was bringing my SMP 300m 2254.50 in for service and just couldn’t resist. I love the size and movement.

Haha...I couldn't wait to get home to check out your video. I managed to sneak it in at work. Another good video, Dan. I'm really enjoying your channel so far. Of those 2 I'd have to go with the LM. There are many reasons for this choice, with the main ones being size and the open 6 and 9 numerals on the LM. Those open numerals are a nice nod to the first gen PO. All the best!

Even with the endlinks on the 2500, it still wears better due to thickness. The 8500s are too top heavy. The first 8500 with the matt ceramic bezel and matt Black dial would be my 2nd pick... if it were thinner. Slim wristed guys would be limited to the 2500 versions. Having worn a standard orange PO 2500 for 10 years, I would say its a great weekender but as I've aged I wore it less. I feel the newer ones lost the elegance and smart casual appeal and went full shiny tool watch. The smp300m 2500 ceramic is a more cost effective sample of the glossy dial/ceramic bezel and dressy diver. But for me its more common, not a fan of skeleton hands or the lack of taper on the bracelet. Bought and sold but a solid watch. The 2020 smp300s have crossed into the same big shiny tool aesthetics of the newer POs, an overlap. Omega have vacated the dress diver space and left it to the sub. I tried on the 2020 sub and its ok but i did see it under the indoor lights, the LEPO and sub don't look at there best then. The sub bracelet and claps have lost its elegance and the watch is too common, esp with the fakes out there, it nice but really did little for me in person. The first ceramic subs are too boxy. The older non ceramic subs have the proportions but not the sturdiness or tech/materials. So, after looking at blancpain as well (bathyscaphe is stunning in person but only a 40mm version would do, the dial is one of the best) my conclusion is this. This PO limited edition liquidmetal is the perfect dressy diver (for me). The hands have the elegance, the visual effect is amazing, esp in natural light. The design more timeless than the newer models and it has enough visual interest vs something like the sub. It honestly still looks better than anything new I have seen in person for the last decade. It seems to go with everything I wear. In 10 years I have seem plenty of planet oceans (more 2500s) but never seen someone with the limited edition on. Sure it commands a premium but its reasonable compared to the sub at retail or any of the newer POs. If you gave me 2020 sub at retail I would sell it on for this. I managed to pick up a mint example last week. Its a keeper for sure. It'll get noticed for its looks and not the brand name. I have got the perfect fit for me in hot and cold weather without needing to resize, although an upgrade to the newer omega clasp is possible. They do come up for sale now and then, so anyone looking for a smart diver I wouldn't hesitate.

I disagree. The older PO's only appear flatter and less top heavy, but they have that protruding case back which does not allow the watch to sit flat on your wrist. The 2500's actually sit higher on the wrist and wobble more if you add lack of micro adjustable clasp. Female vs Male end links is an acquired taste, once your eyes get used to one version, the other starts to look odd.

I have a first generation PO chronograph and just picked up the new PO without a chronograph. I prefer the new one, as I like the new numeral font, improved bezel (worlds better), new crown and He escape valve, upgraded movement (worlds better), bracelet (worlds better), etc. I do prefer the old steel case back (I don’t really like display backs), and the old second hand which I hadn’t noticed until you pointed it out. I also prefer the uniform lume color of the older POs. My older PO chronograph is a 46mm behemoth that I honestly don’t have the wrist size for, and it doesn’t get worn.

The first gen Chrono is a beast! I could never get one with the weird dial layout and date window. I agree that the new one is a huge upgrade on the first gen, but my PO really was the sweetspot as it were. Enjoy your new watch! 😁
