Omega 3 as Depression & Anxiety Treatment

Omega 3 as Depression & Anxiety Treatment
In this video, we introduce Robert D. McMullen, MD who is a psychiatrist in NYC who has been performing psychopharmacology for over 30 years, the last 10 of which include transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS). Today, he will discuss some omega 3 as a treatment for depression and bipolar disorder.
Firstly, studies have shown that if you take omega 3 it really helps with depression. The main fat that helps is the EPA and a recommended dosage would be at least 2 grams a day. This was first described in a paper in 1999 by Andrew Stoll who had remarkable results testing fish oil on patients with depression. According to Dr. McMullen’s calculation, to achieve the results he did with his study, Dr. Stoll must have been giving his patients 18 pills a day of fish oil. Furthermore, one of Dr. McMullen’s patients has been receiving 18 pills a day of fish oil pills for depression since 1999. Whenever his dosage is decreased to 10, the patient immediately falls back into the depression and remits as soon as the dosage is increased, which further shows the positive effects of fish oil supplements on treating depression.
Secondly, apart from double-blind studies performed, there are also observational studies performed that support fish oil supplements as a treatment for depression. One such study shows that Japanese people and Eskimos have very low depression rates. This is due to the fact that these people eat very large amounts of fish, meaning they consume large amounts of Omega-3.
Thirdly, there are a number of different types of lipids that are not equal in effect. Likewise, Omega 3 and Omega 6, in particular, have different benefits as well. Humans have 6 to 10 times as much Omega 6 (which we obtain from corn oil) than Omega 3 (which we obtain from fish oil) in the body, which is not good for our bodies. This due to the fact that the walls of our brain cells are made up of 40% of EPA and DHA, which are fats that we obtain from fish. Due to the fact that a lot of our food contains corn oil, our Omega-3 becomes a smaller part of our diet which affects the Omega 3 levels in the brain. Our ancestors consumed a lot more Omega 3 due to the fact their diet consisted mainly of plants and lean wild animals such as deer, both of which contain a lot of EPA and DHA. Therefore, limiting the daily consumption of saturated fats containing corn oil, and taking 2 fish oil pills a day will help us greatly in increasing our Omega-3 levels, which has shown to help with depression.
These are just some of the findings presented in the video above regarding Omega-3 as a treatment for depression. For more information, call TMS Braincare at (212) 362-9635, or fill out a contact form at tmsbraincare.com/ today!

I'm struggling with depression all my life. I'm 47 now, The last 2 years I couldn't find a relief, especially the last year. I had severe anxiety with akathisia every single day (pure nightmare), and the only thing could give me a temporary relief was Lorazepam but in long term my anxiety, depression got worse, I had no appetite, and I was weighting 55 kilos and 183cm height. I had suicide thoughts and severe brain fog. Antidepressants stop working, and I've tried every medicine and supplements out there. Blood tests were fine, but I didn't test my Omega 3's. I decide to stop Lorazepam and felt a little better than I start taking 1750mg EPA/DHA and eating 2 eggs in the morning. In 15-20 days my anxiety gone, and my severe depression almost diminished, my SSRIs start working again and I feel great. Omega 3 are essential and will keep taking them now along with Vitamin D and other. Don't ever lose hope, you have to be a doctor of yourself and try to find what your body needed. Believe in your self and believe that you can cure from this disease. I pray for all people who struggling.

@@jayros4269 sorry this is a long answer so I’ll front load it with the answer to your question- about 4 or 5 days. I watched a video similar to the one above about omega 3s and depression. I started adding two heaping tablespoons of ground flax to my diet everyday. It was a only a few days after that that I noticed a significant change (woke up in a good mood and then had energy to get stuff done). I switched to fish oil because ground flax is hard to eat everyday- it’s super gritty. I’ve been reading about it and binge watching videos about it and it sounds like it doesn’t work for everyone or every kind of depression so I don’t want to give false hope to people but it *definitely* works for some. For me, I didn’t feel any difference at all for the first few days and then on like the 4rth or 5th morning I just woke up… different. I hope it works for you.

Don't do a megamix yourself, ask a MD or a specialist doctor, all neurotransmission inhibitors must be stopped PROGRESSIVELY and SLOWLY while Omega 3 cans be increased slowly too. Also Omega 3 and other fatty acids tend to do also blood thinning and lower arterial pressure; so it can render low dose aspirin useless. But all that must be performed carefully and checked with blood tests along the way. hypnotics and anti depressant are chemical drugs with addictive side effects, so slowing down must be very slow, to avoid any withdrawal effect. Natural products are always better than pure chemical, but sometimes when natural is not enough, you may have no choice but to use chemical. Each person is different, unique. So things must be tested slowly, carefully, assessed, and blood checked.

Just make sure you take it with a meal or snack that has some fat, it improves absorption a lot in comparison to no food/low fat meal/snack. It’s been studied. However I’m cutting down the Klonopin as it rarely helps and often makes me impulsive, act out of character and disinhibition comes out a little, perhaps some aggression feelings too. it can happen with benzodiazepine’s and I’ve had it first hand and demonstrated it to myself over and over so that’s why it has to be really needed to take it as I know over 1mg I get cranky. I’ve decided to up the fish oil and fresh spirulina daily and drop the benzos. I’m not making any long term benefit at all from them and maybe they are interfering with my anti depressant effects? it's better if the fish oil is fresh. The body protects itself pretty good from rancid oils, it just taste like shit but won't kill you. if a product leaves bad taste or fishy burps, either cool it down, or take in the beginning of a meal, or change brand.

This video is the first I’ve seen (of many) to suggest that the more you take, the better. All the other research that I’ve seen indicated that there was a “therapeutic window” of around 1,000 mgs EPA, daily. Taking twice that appeared to reduce effectiveness, as did taking 3 or 4 times that. Incidentally, 18 grams would be around 36 pills a day; I’m really happy with just the 2 pills daily and the difference is undeniable. Night and day. It’s about $16 or $17 for a bottle and every few months our grocery store has a bogo sale. Especially ask your doctor if you’re on any blood thinners or have any issues with your blood’s ability to clot. I really recommend trying it if you’re interested. I used to have panic attacks, anxiety, and not be able to get anything done. It’s not a magic cure but if I was at a constant 8 (of anxiety/depression) before, now I’m at a 3. Doing my dishes, getting the mail, talking to people, not avoiding my family... all weird but welcome changes. It’s been a little over a year on them and I felt the difference after only a few days. They absorb best when you take them with something with fat in it, like whole milk yogurt or avocado or... whatever you like that’s fatty. Don’t take 18 grams 😂❤️

@Doughknot Lump low LDL is linked with higher all cause mortality. It is an innocent bystander, trying to fix inflammation of the arteries. It’s only relevant where LDL is small and dense. Stay away from seed oils and sugar and you’ll be fine. But don’t take my word for it - plenty of proper science out there. I’d recommend Ken berry and ted Neiman as good sources.
