The band is Karpe. Previously known as Karpe Diem. The album is Omar Sheriff. Magdi has an Egyptian father and Norwegian mother. Chirag’s parents come from India, but Chirag’s father, though originally Indian, came to India from Uganda as a refugee. Chirag said in an interview that when his parents have an argument, his mother will at some point throw out “that’s because you’re from Uganda!” to her husband. Norwegian is Chirag’s father’s fifth language. However, both Chirag and Magdi are born and raised in Norway. Karpe has been active for more than 20 years, but this was the first album where they mixed Norwegian with other languages. Fairuz means victorious in the Arabic language. Baraf means ice, snow in Hindu and Somali. The opening line is “brown feet in the snow.” Also check out “Toyota’n til Magdi” (Magdi’s Toyota) and “Gunerius.” Gunerius is a place in Oslo, Norway’s capital.

Diaspora pop. New genre by Karpe. They do a infusion of languages and culture. This song in particular tells the experience of being children by immigrants. Having to translate for their parents at the doctors office, doing taxes or what not - grown up things. Invisible to non-immigranter. Karpe shed light on these experiences. Putting words to the feelings. Bridging a gap between those who know, and those who need this insight to understand and learn. Intercultural dimention/translation. Their music and art has meant a lot to people across generations, they feel seen, heard and understood. And it has opened Norway more as a society, being the small country that we are - but still diverse. Love Karpe. Greatful for their album Omar Shariff
