I was stationed in Salalah in 1974 with the British Army.... We often went on re-supply hikes up the Jebal when the Heli's were down or not available... It was an amazing time in my life and seeing that country of 1974 change into the beautiful country we have today is wonderful... I fell in love with the country and its people.... God bless Oman... a true friend....

Was in Oman a few years back. Unfortunatly never got to Dhofar, but was able to see Nizwa and the Jabel Akhdar mountains, where there was a smaller rebellion a decade or so before the big one in the south. Such a beautiful country, I hope to return someday.

I'm from Dhofar and my uncle told me how scary july 19th, 1972 was.. Adoo "Enemy" attacked town of Mirbat at early foggy morning they were more than 200 armed soldiers with thier klashinkovs agains 9 men of SAS who struggled bravely defending the town till aerial support arrived which was the deciding factor of the battle. People of Mirbat still remembered that day and paying tribute to those who sacrificed themselves to defend peace.. And imagine if the assault succeded it would be a horrible massacre for civillians!

Before the communists organized the insurgency, under the previous sultan, a slave-owning absolute despot, the Dhofar region was a personal fief of the sultan, no roads were built no schools no hospitals. The communists built all these things themselves, ended internecine tribal warfare, and largely equalized the status of women. So while it was ultimately put down, the rebellion succeeded in forcing the transition, via coup, of the sultan's son Qaboos, who despite being a British puppet, was forced to give more infrastructure, money, etc. to the south and the rest of the country. So in terms of fighting for their survival and autonomy, their goals and others were greatly advanced by the struggle. You can see all this in the documentary The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived, made by a Lebanese woman. Her and her crew walked 500km across the desert to film the fighting. RAF were bombing civilians and destroying wells and other infrastructure these people needed to survive. It rather resembles the Kurdish women serving in the YPG, and the overall situation is also similar, as well as to current "Frozen" conflict in the Western Sahara. While the rebellion was put down (as commentators note, most work done by turncoat rebels (those who wanted autonomy compromised/got paid by the new sultan) a much larger portion of Iranian troops (and other gulf regimes to UK troops). The insurgents were supported by other states (including Saudis), but mainly by the South Yemeni Peoples Republic of Yemen, who shared a border.

However, there had been a Gurkha brigade stationed in Brunei since the Brunei revolt in 1964, which the British army put down on behalf of the Sultan of Brunei. Also, during the Indonesian confrontation of Malaysia (1965 /66) the British army used Brunei as one of their major bases.

The Dhofar communists wanted to free their country and the Persian Gulf from feudal slavery. It was because of them that the Sultan was forced to carry out reforms in the country. Oman therefore owes its relative prosperity to the communists, not the British. Prosperity that is built on the semi-slave labor of migrants from South Asia.

This British English has been long time forgotten and it was spoken in ancient times in GB. Right now "Allah u Akbar" is common saying of typical English man and it is part of English cultural heritage. This ancient custom saying comes from the region of Londonistan. If translated it means "God is great". This noble phrase is commonly used in capital of France, Belgium and very soon Germany. It just proves that cultures do not have borders.
