Glad Olympus has continued with these; I always carry one in the front pocket of my bag. Started in the early 90s with an Olympus Mju then in 2004 my first digital camera a Mju 200 until replacing that with a TG-3 which died 2yrs ago and replaced by a TG-6. I always carry it as a back up camera. Mostly I will carry a normal camera with a prime lens and the Mju will provide a zoom if needed. I remember going on holiday and haviong trouble with my Nikon DSLR on the first day and then used the Mju for the rest of the holiday and it was fantastic. Returning home I dumped the Nikon and bought a Panasonic GX7 with 14-140mm for holidays and an Olympus 17mm f1.8. It was the end of SLRs for me. I have now moved on to my Sony A7II but still keep a Mju for all occasions. Mjus are just unique, nothing else like them; lots of fun ;-)

Thanks Peter for the update. I really enjoy TG-6 and it is my daughter camera really. She has been using it over a year now and it still runs like a champ since she was 5. In camera charging is so slow on TG-6 so USB-C is a really nice addition. However, these small upgrades (video, construction mode, etc) on TG-7 doesn't justify to pay $150 over TG-6.

One other amazing feature of this and every TG starting with the TG-3 is the in camera macro focus stacking. It is truly phenomenal. The TG-1 was my first Oly camera and my first point and shoot. I got the TG-3 when they introduced focus stacking and then the TG-4 because it added RAW. The quality and awesomeness of these little gems was a huge factor in my change from Nikon full frame to Olympus - in my case the EM-1 Mk2. I have my TG-4 with me always and will now look at this new version to see if it is worth upgrading in my case.

Good thing they kept at it, first ever Oly I bought was the TG-6 which didnt last more than three months due to the menu system and that I bought the red one over the black. Three years after that I finally cracked it, with no little thanks to you. Ended up buying a second hand TG-5 this summer, based on the price being right. I am somewhat keen on the TG-7, but that is mostly based on the upgraded screen over the TG-5, but not before it dips in price.

An extra durable every day carry camera. Shutter speed priority would be an added feature. And a digital ND filter (like the Canon) would be nice, too.

I bought the original TG-1 for motorcycle travel, then got the TG-4 and next the TG-6. These cameras should not be judged by what they don't have that other cameras do, but rather by what they have and can do that other cameras can not. By that I mean the compact size, and amazing durability. The camera you have with you is the best in the world at moment vs. no camera at all, and the TG series has allowed me to get some amazing shots which might have killed my cell phone. Thanks, Peter.

I have had the TG-6 ever since it came out. It replaced my old TG-830 and was a significant upgrade. It's a great little durable camera for casual shots and I take it with me whenever I am going on a local hike, a beach resort or to a casual get-together where I just want a camera to take a few snapshots i.e. where I am not that worried about maximum image quality and just want something very pocketable. I suppose I could use my phone in the latter occasion but I really don't like the ergonomics of using the phone and prefer an actual camera body. Looking at the TG-7, I do not see anything that would prompt me to upgrade from my TG-6. If they added a viewfinder and a shutter priority option I would snap one up.

Used TG-4 for field work (needed a camera that can be used in dense vegetation without worries of camera breaking down as it will get dirty or wet unavoidably). Much more convenient than using anything bigger plus image quality was sufficient fr my use, so might need to upgrade the old TG-4 to this one. The old camera still works, but it has been reasonably abused so it might “die” some time soon. Macro shots are good with that light diffuser, and like the fact you can sink the camera (if not going deep diving) without any extra housing needed. Also has worked fine in cold temperatures. 😊

Great video, Peter! I like how durable these cameras are but I am a bit disappointed they didn't add anything really new over the TG-6. It would've been really nice if they were able to update the lens a bit and maybe have used a new sensor. It didn't even have to be a bigger sensor just an updated sensor in general. I know the smaller sensor keeps it small and gives it the ability to focus closer. But jeez this has been the same sensor and lens combination since the TG-5 (maybe even longer honestly). Or at least sell this camera with ALL the accessories. That would make the camera worth buying over the older models.

I get the feeling that OMDS are just updating some of the existing cameras from Olympus to move ahead with the rebranding as old Olympus stock runs out, and also give the market something new talk about, rather than not releasing anything. This extra time gives the R&D department breathing room to work on something spectacular. OMDS have really been only going for a couple of years and it takes a long time to develop something brand new, even if they are still working with a lot of the old Olympus staff. I suspect that when something really new comes out it will be pretty spectacular. I know lots are waiting for a new Pen F. Personally, I'm glad it came out now as I was about to buy a TG-6.

OMDS hit it out of the park with the OM-1, and we know the OM-5 will need updating by the end of 2024 if only to replace the microUSB with a USB-C port as required by the EU, and they still need to do something with the E-M10 series. I'm OK with them making careful but strategic steps. But, putting what they have done so far into context, they have three cameras with the OM System label that are truly weather hardened and adventure capable.

Good points here. OMDS is basically a start-up in a way. It is quite small company. OM-5 do not need to be upgraded. You can sell cameras without USB-C after 31.12.2024. The regulation is for new equipment. The cycle for 5-cameras has been about 3-4 years. I would expect upgraded OM-5 not until late spring 2024 or even August 2024.

@@ForsgardPeterPeter, living in the US I wasn't aware that the EU USB-C mandate would allow existing equipment to be grandfathered in. That's great news for OMDS because, as you said, the OM-5 is good for several years, and now OMDS can put their money and energy into other products. The good thing about "startup" companies is that they typically have much faster decision processes and can react to market conditions faster than large bureaucratic organizations. Thanks.

TG-7 really differentiates itself from the competition with its accessories. Nikon COOLPIX W300 beats it by sheer depth but add the external case on the TG-7 and the TG-7 wins. Hi Peter! I watched this video with great interest because I have been using a TG5 since its first days replacing the TG4. I have some comments to offer, particularly for people considering whether to upgrade from a TG5 or TG6, and for those hoping to maximize usability of this model range. I have found the TG5 to be a great travel camera and also I love to use it on the beach and on rocky shorelines where salt spray and sand are a threat to other equipment. Sometimes I even wade into the water to make "portraits" of waves. My TG5 has many advantages over an iPhone: it's rugged and has computational functions that are not available on the iPhone, such as focus stacking and pro capture. The TG5's macro capabilities are incredible, and as you point out, the ergonomics allow for unusual shooting positions that are awkward with an iPhone. So what's not to like? As far as I can tell from the specs, the TG7 lens is unchanged from TG5 and TG6. While the zoom is unique compared to iPhones, people should know that there are some significant image quality issues. At f2, the corners of the image are unacceptably soft at the widest angle setting (25mm full frame equivalent). Fortunately, there is one physical aperture stop, to f2.8, that improves resolution in the corners.(The remaining "aperture" stops are handled by neutral density filters.) But if you like to shoot at the widest angle of view, even stopped down, image quality in the corners is not great. At the other end of the zoom range (100mm full frame equivalent), the image is unacceptably soft and low contrast across the entire area. If you use the lens in the full frame equivalent range of 35mm to 75mm or so, and keep it stopped down by that one physical aperture, you will be pleased with the image quality. And you will be impressed with the macro images as well.

@@rumrill5020 There is one full physical aperture stop and a three stop optical ND filter. So at the 25mm equivalent focal length, the available apertures are f2 (wide open), f2.8 (physical aperture) and f8 (ND filter).

  • @guidoz1747

    @guidoz1747

    9 ай бұрын

While it may seem odd to only have two physical f-stops and the rest being dealt with by ND filters, stopping down using aperture would probably have introduced some serious diffraction issues, which are not there using ND filters. As the small sensor already has enough depth of field (comparatively speaking, of course), stopping down would possibly ruin more than do good. I use a TG-6 for underwater photography with an optically-triggered external strobe - and if you are using the extremely capable macro abilities the amount of light needed is often such that the control feedback cannot switch the strobe off fast enough - so you get over-exposed images. But, with the ND filters in place, this can be controlled very easily, with great results. I normally use a house dSLR with macro lens underwater, and while the image quality, as such, is better, the small, compact and easy-to-use TG's come very, very close in macro - they have a good reputation for this, and deservedly so.

I have noted that the brand name has changed but the other changes seem much more discreet. I'm very clear about the reason for this camera. 1. A very good camera had to be updated due to parts in it being discontinued in world market. 2. The technology in the camera was really good enough. 3. When releasing the camera with updates internal, its good to do some relevant feature updates as well. And they did. 4. The camera has sold good with its "only" 12 mp for a long time and does still. The tech in it is still very complex and complete update in everything is not worth loosing the profit, despite its not 100 mp stacked with 20 times zoom and m43 sensor. The camera is made for what its made fore. 5. Price range of this type of camera will in these war and infaltion times not accept much expensier tech update. Its better to wait a year or two more. 6. It's gonna sell well for next year or two. By that, i dont see the big complaining from all those people as fair. I was disappointed by the OM-5 too, but only because all the wrong rumours that made me think it would have the stacked sensor. But now I have it professionally at my job, and it wins over Nikon D850 and Sony 7R3 any time i use it except for some film making where the Sony still has better hardware (usb-C, headphone for example). But he OM-5 is so super in whats it made for. I don't need better camera except for USB-C and battery capacity. I don't have the TG-5,6,7 ot similar, but I have seen how happy users are with the camera models. GOOD ENOUGH THEN, - DON'T COMPLAIN i say to all those boring complainers. Complains hurts OMDS future, and all our future with compact camera gears. Thank you Peter for sticking up with OMDS. I agree with you, the cameras are good enough. The only thing i am hoping for is a new OM-2 with bigger like 30 mp non stacked sensor and the rest as OM-1. And they are sibbelings with different user groups. OM-2 for those who want megapixels and video centric, and OM-1 for the ones who wants speed, photo quality and durability in nature centric.

Basically, it's still the same camera as the TG-5. Same body, mostly the same controls and features, same lens, same sensor. And there's nothing wrong with that. Olympus basically perfected this category of camera, so keeping it alive with a new iteration of the same is nice. I am still using my TG-5 - should it ever break down I will try to find another used TG-5 or TG-6 at a good price and if I cannot find one, I can always buy the more expensive TG-7 if I have to.

The reason I never bought a TG-6, and won't buy the TG-7, is the lack of an EVF. I find LCD screens in intense sunlight very difficult to see and compose with, and this is a camera that is going to be used outdoors in intense sunlight. It's a shame, as I'd love to have one of these to take places where I won't risk my OM-1. Perhaps a future TG-8 will add EVF.

I use both GoPro's and a TG6 for underwater video and photos, and the use-case of either is vastly different: the GoPro excels at video and wide angle - without strobe triggering it is horrible for underwater photos (due to lack of light you get image noise as the ISO goes up, and without artificial light, lacking colour), and you simply cannot get too close to anything without it being out of focus. The TG's on the other hand are far better for photos because of the flash which can trigger an external ones, and the amazing close-up and macro abilities. Having zoom also makes it a bit more versatile in a certain range - where the GoPro's view is still far too wide even in linear mode. From a video point of view the TG's fall behind: you can always hear the clicking of the autofocus, and the zoom sound is horrible. But, if you want to video a small creature, it does work rather well - and that is something you simply cannot do with a GoPro. So, if I need some wide video, I use the GoPro, if I want photos and macro, the TG.

I had 3 Olympus TG and still have one TG cameras, used just for holidays and trekking, and to be honest, they are just OK, tough definitively, easy to use YES but just more than average image quality , I have an entry level Fujifilm XP, twice cheaper and the image quality is at least equivalent and better underwater. I want to say I'm an big Olympus fan (+ Canon, Panasonic) since the OM2SP (film), and had, since I started my digital journey with Olympus, the E10, E1, E3, E520, 8080CW, OMD-1 MK1->3, OMD-5 1->2 + various point and shot including 3 TGs. And my main complain about TG are no or very low innovation from one generation to the other and so-so image quality. And to be honest, not enthusiastic of the new cameras OM System released till now, it's just rebadged models from Olympus with a few marketing add-ons, therefore my next camera will not be an OM System, I tested the OM-1 and except some minor improvements, it's an OMD-1 MKIII with a more AF options + AF often a little less accurate than the OMD-1. The Panasonic G9II when released will be my next camera.
