OM System OM-5 - After 3 months, have I decided to keep it?

Фильм және анимация

I reviewed this camera shortly after I purchased it but it has a few design flaws that concerned me at the time. I have now been using it for several months and in todays video I will tell you if I have decided to keep it.

And the fact you buy your own kit is why I like and respect your reviews

I think you are a bit hard on the OM-5 for it's smaller battery size/life and the "unlimited" video recording feature. Even without an external power source you still get far longer than the 30-minute video limit of the E-M5 Mk III. The point of the OM-5, after all, is to have an upgraded E-M1 Mk III in a smaller, lighter, package, and you can't have that and a giant battery both. Otherwise, I liked that you pointed out that the OM-5 is quite small, yet can handle larger lenses more like an OM-1 with the quick addition of the ECG-5 hand grip. I have both the OM-1 and OM-5 and I love both. For travel it's hard to beat the OM-5 with just any combination of compact MFT lenses - and not just tiny primes, but also some pro-grade zooms which are half or less the size of a FF equivalent. I don't believe I actually heard you say if you are keeping your OM-5, but from the tone of your video it sounds like it to me. Good job!

I am somewhat crossing my fingers for a OM-5MkII with the OM-1 internals come autumn...

I got my om5 new from Cotswold Cameras for £699. Not the fastest delivery, but you can't argue at that price.

I do worry about OM System surviving if it continues the same mistake that Olympus made, ie holding back on features on the E-M5 models. To numerous M43 users, the E-M5 models (and now OM-5) are what we want as a compact but HIGH QUALITY camera. Olympus had insisted in degrading this line since the E-M5 II and look where Olympus is now. Many of us traditional M43 users believe in a smaller camera with the latest sensor, the latest IS and AF etc, and are willing to pay. We don't want the big E-M1 models and all those fancy wildlife or fancy film making features. I'm afraid that more will move on to Fuji or other systems, after seeing this OM-5. OM System is still doing the same thing as Olympus here, using very old sensors, old USB connection, and re-using left over parts in the trash bin for essential functions. Sigh.

As long as OM System only puts out used Olympus gear, I’m going to buy used gear as well 😁

Hi Bob…..what type of grip do you have for the OM5. It’s small grip is my only issue with my OM5, otherwise it’s great.

I have been in and out of Olympus M43 several times and thinking of going back again. Just wondering what your thoughts are on future of OM Systems?

Hi Bob just to let you know I bricked my new OM-1 checking for updates and that was my Acer Microsoft laptop so I don't think its just an Apple/Olympus problem gladly I got a full refund.

I use to own a m 4/3 lumix but my son got me interested in Fuji so I bought a Pro 2 . Well after having been a photographer for over 60 years (took it up while serving in the army back in 1959) I needed something lighter. I looked at several KZread videos on m 3/4 systems and hit on the OM 5. I ordered it on line, started to send it back, but decided to keep the camera and am glad I did. I do have a question that you or your viewers can answer. I had the original lumix 20 mm lens which is noisy when it focuses but is really sharp . Do the Olympus 17m or the lumix 20mm ll , also make noise when they focus? And really enjoy your videos. They made me come back to m 4/3 .

They do on the EM5 - M3 (just tested them). So if this OM5 is as they say essentially a rebadge of the former, then I'm guessing it's a yes.

For American viewers, the term "slated" in British English means to criticize harshly.
