Say You Love Me wasn’t “Om” Alec Khaoli’s first solo recording but the 1985 EP solidified the bass player and songwriter’s standing as one of South Africa’s most consistently innovative pop auteurs. He built a career on ubiquitous rock, pop and soul hits with groundbreaking bands like the Beaters, Harari and Umoja. But Khaoli’s seemingly endless fountain of music continued outside these ensembles.
Khaoli released several successful solo works beginning with 1982’s “Magic Touch,” while he made records with Umoja and worked on other productions with friends. Driven to create, he says songs came to him quite spontaneously, and he built them up quickly, normally beginning with bass lines and then adding Prophet 5 keyboard and other synths. This creativity was aided by Khaoli’s own recording studio. He was the first South African to have a privately-owned studio. As black artists were not given equal time in the white-owned studios, having his studio allowed Khaoli to develop in his own way, at his own pace. Hence his productive output during the 80’s and early 90’s, releasing 5 LPs with Umoja and 5 solo LPs, along with numerous singles and EPs.

I agree member. I mean almost 250 Thousand who have watched this video since 2017. It might not be on the level of the Americans who normally clock around millions, but it sends that message to say there is talent in Africa. Thanks Om Alec

I think music 🎶 of those years was marvellous from all corners. Of course in Uganda South Africa 🇿🇦 music was very prominent and tapes from Ssegico used to have numbers 10,11,12..... other songs from eg Hot soul singers are now available on KZread.

Memories that will last for ever and ever!! I can't stop listening to this song!! Thanks Om Alec Khaoli!!!!!!
Those were the times of brentwood, crocket & jones / flosheim, ivory like necklace, a hat with a feather, lexington cigarrete, coins in the pocket, okapi, that green shirt with black horses on it, white socks with black dice on it, 'permed" hair, a belt with a bullet like handle and yellow dust cloth to wipe off dust from shinny shoes. What a fashion!! You couldn't date beautiful girls without those things. I really miss how our uncles, brothers etc used to roll back in the 80s. Those were the good old days when music was "danceable' and enjoyable. Times like that will never come back!!

this song and other South African funk songs from this era (1985 thereabouts) WERE SUCH MONSTER HITS ALL OVER AFRICA..OMG!!!
Craftsman. Deadly on synths and he always operated outside the trend space but he was always 'on time'. I would love to hear an interpretation by the current generation someday soon. Long live Om Alec!
Oom Alec is the one of best Bass guitarist we have in SA!!!!!

This song is fascinating when you really put your ear to it. The rhythm carries the melody throughout the entire song. Yet it's never repetitive or overbearing. There's a lot going on within the instrumentation as well as the vocal performances of Om Alek Khaouli et al in every section of the song. No part is exactly the same. Everything in this song just seems to totally click. Great composition and recording. It's a masterpiece of our AFRICAN culture.
