Thanks. I usually set the first timer to 10 secs so I have time to align the shot over my head then 3 to 5 seconds in between depending on how windy it is.

👍Well done - useful info, competently presented, without distracting hype. Welcome back - was starting to worry, but looks like you are back in stride. Whiteboard use, with and without camera display, is very effective. An asside about rolling shutter -- read about how some have made lemonade by quickly rotating camera about the lens axis, during silent exposure, to produce "folded landscape" and similar creative effects. Haven't tried it yet, but it looks interesting. Look forward to your vids as new Olympus offerings emerge.

@@RobTrek Hi Rob as matter of fact I do have 3 questions. 1. I use the fonction button to come back to myset like you thought us but every time the camera goes on sleep mode it reverts to settings that I changed while playing with it and I don't remember exactly what I changed. Is there a way for the camera to permanently stay on my favored base settings? 2. I can't find part 6 of the series for beginners for the OM-d E-M10 do you know where I can find it? 3. After I am done that series what videos do yo recommend I watch next? Thanks a lot for your videos once again, and I would but much oblige if you would take the time to answer these questions.

I use the "Art" and "Scn" modes for mysets. #2 Part 6 is actually my recommendation for a 1st lens. kzread.info/dash/bejne/apuksNGDkZSye5M.html #3 I think any video about flash would be best or macro. I've watched three of your videos on the EM10 Mark II. This one is my favorite because this one had the least amount of 'OK's. But seriously these are great instructional videos. I'm planning on buying the Mark III, so this will provide me with a good introduction, realizing that they've reportedly streamlined the complexity of the menu system for the Mark III. One suggestion is that when you refer to another of your videos, you put a link in the description. Again great instructional videos. Thank you.

In my efforts to shoot the Aurora- your video setting would be the complete opposite. Off stabilization, off focus, open bulb, long exposures, single shot, with at least 3-5 sec pause between each shot to keep motor cool. Your video is so helpful, so I can see where these various settles are located. Thank you!

Your videos are phenomenal for beginners. Your way of explaining is easily understood and you show how to get best of this wonderful gear! I love taking pictures (Landscape and macro) and bought this camera last year. For this particular video, i have a question. Is there a recommended setting for the type of picture you are taking? So, for example would you recommend a certain shutter setting for portrait vs macro vs landscape vs moving subject? Thanks again for your wonderful work!

General shutter speeds for portraits are 1/60th or faster, macro & telephoto I'd go for 1/200th or faster. Landscape anything is good on a tripod. Moving subjects depends on how fast they are moving. People 1/800th, animals and birds 1/2000th or faster.

Thanks Rob for these great videos, you really go above and beyond for people with this camera! Please if you have time, could you recommend the settings you would use for shooting indoor sports e.g. table tennis. During competitions, I would most likely be using a silent shutter. There is also likely to be good light, so I don't think I'll need to crank the ISO too high. Any further advice would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

I love table tennis! Try using C-AF, Tracking OFF, Single Point Focus, Silent Continuous Low Shutter, Shutter Priority at 1/250th and faster, and C-AF Release OFF.

The best. I have own several M10. Currently M10 4. I'm using this video to reset my M10 4. It quit working and has been repaired. I been using my M10 2. I didn't like the handle on the M10 3 nor the scene setup. So I trade back to Adroma last year.

Very helpful, though I was hoping for more nuts and bolts explanation of silent shutter mode. It sounds like it is actually an electronic shutter mode, and the purpose is to get more burst speed from the camera. I'll need to research that further.

Do you have a video that explains best settings for shooting players in a soccer game? Or what would you suggest. Really enjoying your videos - I have had this camera for a while but I struggled to know how to use.

Thanks. I'd probably shoot in shutter priority at 1/800th sec, auto everything else. Select single point or 3x3 group focus. Aim for the chest when focusing. To keep ISO low, try 1/400th or even 1/200th. You may get some motion blur if they are moving but if you pan it could make for some interesting shots.

Thank you. That is an amazing photo and I certainly see why sequential shutter was used. That lens is way sharper than I thought it could be. Inspired. Hey, we all know you live near the big city lights, but if you ever get a chance to find a really dark location, could you try and share your approach to milky way photography? A tall order, but you do have that 7-14mm wide lens...which is what I guess you'd use looking toward the Southern sky. Guessing you'd have to go all the way to Zekiah Swamp (I used to live up that way). Anyway -- you are a great instructor. Thanks for a really fine channel.

Thanks. I'd probably go out to Shenandoah and use my 12mm f/2.0. It's a full 2 stops faster than my 7-14. Still a tough call. Wider lenses let you use longer shutter speeds, so I'll have to experiment. My goto camera for astro is my Nikon d750 and 20mm f/1.8. Haven't tried any of my Olympus gear for that yet. Rob, the glass on the viewer of my Olympus E-M10 Mark 2 broke, so I think I need to look at soon buying another body. I was really happy with this model which I think I got to know and feel comfortable (in a good part from what I learnt from you). For that reason I wanted to ask what model of body would you suggest will be a good replacement? and in which I can use all the lenses I already have. I am not a pro, I am retired and do photography as a hobby, so I have to work with a limited budget. Your suggestion will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance...🙏

I think either the E-M5 Mark II or Mark III would be a great upgrade/replacement. However, if you like the tilting rear screen rather than the flip out, then go with the EM10 Mark ii. Skip the Mark III and IV.

Hi Rob my question pertaining to the em1-mark iii. Specifically in video mode. I found the shutter speed step is very slow. Is there a way to increase the step so it doesn’t take like 5 minutes to adjust from 30 to 60 or 60 to 120 ? I find one click dial in video mode increases shutter speed by like 0.1. Vs in “Still” mode, each click dial increases the shutter speed variably and fast. Thank you

You just need to turn off flickr scan. Goto the video menu -> Mode Settings -> Flicker Scan "OFF".

Dear Rob. I am going to purchase OM-D E-M 1 II. but I am scared about the very complicated set-up with all the various possibilities. Thrfr I was very glad to find your intro-course for setting up the OM-D 1o II. Could you pls let me know whether such basic set up would be the same with the camera I like to get. The settings and menus are very similar, you should have no problem adapting what I show here to the em1.ii. The only significant difference that stands out is the auto iso is limited to 6400 on the em1.ii. The menus are also spread out a bit more and the super control panel has even more options.

I'm saving that for another video and the em10-ii took the acc port away! I use the sema on my pl8 and love it.

Very great tutorial, Thanks! However, in my Shutter Settings if I rotate the front dial I can't see the anti-shock and silent option. The setting only switchs from Single, H, L, 2sec, 12 sec, custom. Can it be a firmware versione problem?

Hi. Which camera do you have? Check the "D" menu for display settings for shutter modes. Sometimes anti-shock is turned off by default.

I've recently bought my first ever camera - a E-M10 Mark III, so thank you for your E-M10 tutorials, I've been enjoying them. Would you be kind enough to clarify a dilemma for me in regards to the silent/electronic shutter? Reading the entire User Manual (yes, I certainly did) I've only seen the silent shutter mentioned under the SCN or AP modes. Under those modes the interval shooting feature is greyed out. I've also seen your timelapse tutorial and noticed that with Interval you only get a choice between standard or anti-shock shutter. Have Olympus made interval shooting incompatible with the silent shutter option? I need a hours-to-minutes (ex 5-6h to 10min video) solution, but without a silent shutter option, my mech shutter would chew itself to death in a matter of months.. Do I only have the option of shooting video and then shrinking it in post?

Seems like they disabled access to the silent shutter when using the timelapse on the Mark III. On my E-M10 Mark II, I can set the shutter to silent in PASM modes, then go into interval shooting using silent shutter. It does seem your only option is to record video then shrink. Just note that video is limited to 29 minutes and the battery will only last about 1.5 hours total. So you'll need to restart the recording and swap batteries or use a dummy battery.

In case you're interested, I've communicated with Olympus CS and they've assured me that if the mechanical shutter would "wear out" it would be covered by the warranty, no question asked. Also they've expressed that the shutter estimated life (e.g. 100k, 200k, 400k actuations) is a mere estimate, as they don't actually wear-test shutters to their limit. If I may ask you one more thing, as far as you know which of the E-M10 IV, E-M5 II/ III, EM1 II/ III - DO ALLOW the use of the silent/electronic shutter in interval shooting? (in case I might want to buy another camera) Thanks again.

It would have helped if you had explained what mechanical shutter, anti-shock mode, and electronic shutter actually are and how they work. Along with their pros and cons.

Generally, I'm in aperture priority, lens set to f/5.6, ISO 400, and flash in full manual. I have three custom modes (mysets). Myset1 is HDR 3shots +/- 2ev with flash OFF, Myset2 is HDR OFF and flash ON, and Myset 3 is HDR & Flash OFF, custom shutter shutter mode 5 shots with 1 second interval. I use Myset 1 & 2 for interiors and exposure blend them in Photoshop. I use Myset 3 for exterior shots when holding the camera high up for overhead shots. This gives me options to choose which shot looks best as the camera is usually unstable when overhead and the composition is all over the place. I adjust the flash power depending on the size of the room. I will adjust ISO to give the flash a bit more reach and balance ambient. At some point, a room is too large for the flash, so I will set an off camera flash in different parts of the room and take multiple shots. I learned everything I do on that channel with some minor adjustments.

Rob, thanks for your tutorials, they are fantastic. I use an on EM-1 (MK1) and I find the shutter speeds to be a little confusing. For instance; when setting the shutter speed down from 1.6", the next setting is 1.3" then 1". Now is becomes confusing because as the shutter speed becomes faster the settings are 1", then 1.3, 1.6. 2 and so on. What are these values? Is 2 actually .2 of a second and 1.3 then .13 of a second and so on. nobody has been able to provide a defintive answer yet. Please help.

Hi. The shutter speed is represented in fractions of a second. So 1" is 1"/1". 1.3 is actually 1/1.3 1.6 is actually 1/1.6 and so on. 200 is 1/200 Hope that helps. -Rob

I see the settings (single, sequential, etc.), but what about FULLY manual settings where I can set the exact shutter speed I want. I have an OMD EM10 mark iii and I cannot find where I can set my shutter speed other than the pre-determined settings you mention. So, can we not shoot completely manual on this camera? Thanks

Yes. Just put the mode dial to "M". You can then control everything.

Yes, I know to put it in Manual Mode. But I do know see where/how to select shutter speed. I can see ISO and aperture, but not shutter speed.

@@debbiekarnes22 Hi. By default, when you are in M mode, the front dial sets aperture, the rear dial sets shutter speed. If this is not the case, go into the custom menu "B" and check the dial function there. You can assign the front and rear dials. ISO is usually set in the super control panel.

How can I turn off shutter sound when shooting on auto? Thank you 🙏

Just a clarification, please. In the High sequential mode, you explain that the auto-focus is only applicable for the first shot (no C-AF, /C-Exp), while for Low sequential mode, the auto-focus is applicable for all the sequential shot, but this happens only in C-AF mode or automatically also in S-AF mode? Yes, silent/electronic is the same. It's okay for portraits unless you are using flash. Then mechanical shutter is mandatory.

Most of them should be there, but I don't have a mark 3.

20:38 Rob you said that you, for the Rls Priority you turn this function Off, but in your previous video (Ep. 49) about camera settings, kzread.info/dash/bejne/rH57s8lwpcrFaJM.html, you said that you leave it On. 21:10 Here you said that you always leave the Image Stabilization On but in Episode 49 you said that you turn it Off. Could you clarify this little bit more? I think this is important for beginners and help the customization in general settings that can be stored in Myset and IAuto. Once again you are doing great, great job for Olympus users. Best regards and keep going on.

Hi. Thanks for pointing out these contradictions. Often my personal settings vs recommended settings can differ. At the time of ep.49, I was shooting a lot in manual focus, continuous high shutter, so I prioritized shutter speed over focus and stabilization. For beginners, I generally recommend prioritizing focus and stabilization over shutter fps to get sharper images. Hope that helps. Please don't hesitate to point out any inconsistencies. I'm always happy to elaborate or make corrections.
