Shuttlecock must be the more official word. I'm from New Zealand and it was only ever called a shuttlecock or if you couldnt be stuffed saying the full word it would just be shuttle like "can you pass me the shuttle" or "where did the shuttle go". Obviously the abbreviated only makes sense if you're actually playing otherwise it sounds like you're talking about a vehicle shuttle. I've only seen it called a birdie on this thread. The only birdie I've heard of in sports is the golf term (i have no clue what it is but have family friends that watch alot of golf so have heard birdie mentioned when i've been at their place).
