This Haikyuu! episode definitely gave me a bit of "Winners and Losers" vibes (S1E16). Anyone else? The feelings I had watching Ohgi Minami were similar to those I felt while watching Michimiya and Daichi's old friend 😭
I loved the immediate backstory we got from Ohgi Minami but I'm wondering if and when we will see them again.... but it was even more of a treat to see the Karasuno boys in action in their first "real" match since getting their butts kicked in the Tokyo training camp. So proud of them!!

    Just to let you know at 5:05 the translation puts in ‘I’ but that is not what he is saying. In this sentence he doesn’t mention him or the team and a more accurate translation would be “will beat everything and go to nationals”. They sound similar but there is no orega or bokuga which means “I will”

    @@Lydia-go7sl Yeah, in Japanese sentence structures, pronouns or the doer/reciever of the action are often omitted. Hinata in that scene didn't use any pronouns, so it can be anything. Also, it's not the first time the translations on Haikyuu has been contextually inaccurate (take it from a professional translator).

    When Kyoko says Tanaka looks good with a banana, what she's actually saying is that it looks "fitting" or that it "suits him". So in essence she's kind of saying he's kind of like a monkey. Not quite the compliment Sarah took it as!

    Hinata actually doesn't say "I". It's just the translator's assumption. In Japanese, the subject/doer in the sentence is often omitted. He omitted the subject in the line he said, but it can be assumed he meant "Karasuno" and not "I," because he's never shown to be selfish in the way Kageyama used to be. Edit: There's another mistake in the translation for this episode. At 17:46 Granpa Ukai doesn't say "I came to see a practice at Karasuno," he actually says "I came to OVERsee practice at Karasuno." Those are two very different things.

    6:00 Actually, Hinata didn't say "I" necessarily. In Japanese, you don't need to say the subject. He just said "going to beat everyone, and go to nationals." It's left open whether he meant himself or the team. So, don't worry. He's not being super selfish. It's just that we need a subject in English, so they had to put something there. It could just as easily have been "we."

    I love Ohgiminami's backstory. Their captain going for that ball at the end is probably one of the most underrated moments in Haikyuu, mostly because he's a tertiary character so most of the fanbase probably don't connect with him emotionally like they do with the major characters. But man, it's really a great moment. It just hits me in the feels every time I watch it.

    I interact with the haikyuu fanbase on twitter to an extent, and I can tell you a lot of ppl were drawn to the manga/anime esp bcos of its ability to make ppl connect even with tertiary characters. Either way, if ppl are reading/watching haikyuu without feeling for these characters, I'd say they're doing it wrong.

    Actually, Japanese is a language that can be used without a subject. Therefore, it is possible to speak without the words "I" or "we". When Hinata talked to the captain of Ogiminami in the bathroom, the English subtitles said "I'm gonna beat-" but in Japanese, Hinata said neither "I" nor "we".

    “You need to hate losing more than you love winning.” This resonates with me in so many ways, not even related to volleyball. Also Sarah, I’ve watched this episode so many times - with other reactors, even - and only just realised during your reaction that Coach Ukai’s reflection on Karasuno formerly “being used to losing” was meant to provide a strong comparison to Ohgi Minami’s attitude. It seems to all come together in a way I just didn’t see until now. That’s why I love this series so much, you can watch it endlessly and still get some new insight! Also, I love the little stories your editor tells with the animations on the side. The blender and Karasuno orange juice made me laugh a lot ❤️ great job editor-san, please keep it up!

    I actually commented about it before too but it is the person who is translating putting that “I” in there. Unlike English Japanese doesn’t require subject in every sentence Hinata is just saying “gonna beat them all and go to Tokyo” I guess they translated it that way because he was alone and without his teammates in that moment But yeah Hinata never said “I” in all those occasions not even once in 2nd season

    5:55 So here's the thing about Japanese that's both convenient and confusing at the same time XD; they often omit the subject of the sentence. So translators have to guess the subject based on previous sentences. Since Hinata just introduced himself, the translator might decide to put in "I" rather than "we" in front of that sentence, but Hinata himself didn't make it specific which he's referring, so it could be either of them. Also, I'm pretty sure someone else already mention it, but Hinata and Kageyama hasn't used the freak quick in this match. They used a regular quick.

    4:50 It's the english translation, Hinata doesn't say "I", the Japanese language generally doesn't mention subjects in sentences, he's basically saying "I'm Karasuno's freshman, Hinata Shouyo! (I'm/we're) going to win, and (I'll/we'll) go to Nationals!" The subject is implied because who else would Hinata be talking about? But it's difficult to translate that implication to English.

  • @cassnake1
    @cassnake12 жыл бұрын

    5:50 - I just wanted to clarify a little language thing. Unlike English, Japanese doesn't require every sentence to have an explicit subject. What Hinata said was literally "going to defeat all and go to Tokyo", but since the English language has to have a subject, the subtitles added the " I'm " at the beginning. Hinata wasn't being selfish/egocentric at all, it was just a language thing

  • @Shirley36

    Also it's interesting, rather than seeing them again in future episodes, we actually very very briefly heard of Ohgi Minami before this... In Season 1 during the tournament and the boys had just returned to school to catch the sports coverage on TV, Ohgi Minami were mentioned as the school that got absolutely destroyed by Shiratorizawa that day, 25-6. In fact it was that exact match which was shown in Towada's flashback this episode.

    Sarah, about Hinata saying "i am going to nationals" it's actually a typical japanese mistranslation or one of those lost meaning translations if you may say. In japanese grammar is actually very common to omit the person in the phrase and also "i" and "we" use the same verb conjugation so when translating, if you don't know japanese well and don't know the situation you can't really tell. In my opinion Hinata definitely said that with "we" in mind, he just is a straightforward guy so they omitted for the impact. Hope i clarified things 😊

  • @jlyn608
    @jlyn6082 жыл бұрын

    As for the "I in team" bit, the translation is off. Hinata doesn't say "I will go to nationals," as Japanese doesn't really use pronouns. "Official" anime translation work is often outsourced, low-budget, and/or extremely rushed, so the literal sentence on-screen isn't necessarily something you can always take at face value. A good rule of thumb that's helped me a bunch: always assume that any and all pronouns might be wrong, and, if something seems unusual or out-of-character, then you can normally assume that it was probably just poorly translated. That, or maybe it's meant as a joke-- Kiyoko saying Tanaka looks good with a banana, for example, is basically just meant to be silly, for example. But that can be difficult to convey with text. Just wanted to try and clear some of that up, though, as I always used to get SUPER confused by stuff like that! Super hyped to see these reactions to the upcoming games! Always such fun. ^^

    Another fun watch. Lots of great advices, too. It kind of bothers me that she keeps calling Haru-Kou "Inter-High", though. I guess she's taking the word "Inter-High" to mean "any tournament that leads to nationals", but "Inter-High" in Japanese high school context is a SPECIFIC name for the big, all-sports summer (nationals) event, so calling anything else "Inter-High" is misleading &/or may lead to confusion. I usually leave my personal opinions about some of the iffy subs, but there were very few this ep, & since many have already made comments about the "omission of pronouns in Japanese" & Kiyoko's "Bananas go so well with the monkey-ish Tanaka" comment, I'm just gonna mention 1 that bothered me (even though it's not that big a deal). 20:35 「馬鹿は…俺か…」➔ "I'm... a fool..." I would have preferred it to be translated to something more like "I guess... I'm the fool...". If it's simply a statement saying "I'm a fool" it would be more like 「俺は馬鹿だ」, but the wording is reversed, & the 「か」that suggests a questioning nuance is there because this phrase is tied in with the words right before it. So it's more like a "I thought him a fool for saying all that, but I guess the real fool here was me" type of line.

    Yeah I think it's relatable being in a match that relates to Ohgi Minami situation. But you are right, there's a certain pride to giving it your all even in the end.

    I feel like I've commented this before, but in Japanese it is very common to drop pronouns, so a lot of the time when you have issues with Hinata saying 'I', he's not actually saying it but because of the translation :/

    14:55 "I wonder if we're gonna see more of this Oghi Minami school, because that was some heavy backstory right off the bat" Yeah, no, that's just how Haikyuu!! rolls lmao. Letting you off easy without making you feel absolutely devastated for every single defeated team, no matter how short their cameo is? Yeah, no can do. Suffer. And that's why Haikyuu!! is one of the best pieces of storytelling I have ever laid my eyes upon. Unparalleled. This episode is really good at showing Karasuno from the other side of the net. When Hinata goes in for the last swing, your heart actually drops because in that moment you can't help but root for Oghi Minami. It is an unexpected feeling, but an exciting one. They've often called Hinata and Kageyama monsters, but this is the moment where you can actually feel it for yourself for the first time, as someone who's never seen the stuggle behind their plays and only gets to experience the finished result, a seemingly effortless unstoppable attack.

    How I explain Haikyuu to my friends who haven’t watched this anime yet. Is Hinata Shoyo is the shinning protagonist, in a show filled with protagonist. Lol

    I do like in this show that they have some characters that look 30 with mortgages because some people just look fully like adults in their teens. I think it’s a funny realistic character design.

    In Hinata’s defense he doesn’t really say "I” or “I am," that’s the translation.

    I remember I played soccer in middle school. I definitely had a habit of loosing. But like we didn’t even have enough members to field a team. So we just had scrimmages and had to borrow members from the other team. 😂😅😂

    w00t! Another amazing episode! I'm always so excited to see you upload, it's so much fun hearing your opinions and thoughts on this. I'm really enjoying this watch-through with you. I hope you're doing well Sarah! I hope you have a fantastic summer! Here in Colorado, we're about to get our first big Spring snowstorm, something like 8-18 inches forecasted. Do you guys get those same sorts of snowstorms in Canada during the Spring or is it a little more forgiving? Either way, I hope all your training is going good! Sending you all my best wishes and positive vibes! ✽-(^▽^)/✽

    Technically, 6:06 Shoyo really didn't say "I" on that one, it's more like, "beat them and go to nationals" kinda..

    Hinata doesn't explicitly say he is going to beat everyone, but he doesn't say "we" either. It's more like he's saying "gonna beat everyone and go to nationals." That's what you would say the literal meaning. I guess usually it's implied that he means himself, but I think Hinata thinks of it as "we."
