Great memories of the airport our family used to fly into nonstop from JFK airport near NYC back in the 60's and 70's! We mostly flew Olympic 707's and 747's, so my father could visit his home country and our relatives. I am writing this in honor of my dear father, who passed recently this year at age 85 in New York. Thanks for everything dad. I LOVE YOU forever!

I worked at JFK for Olympic Catering (1989-1994)and it was an honor to be able to have boarded all of the four 747's but the Bravo plane was my favorite. I also loved Captain Petrou!

Flew Olympic Airways MEL to ATHENS, ATHENS to MEL in 1988. Landed at night and remember the taxi to the hotel. I was looking out the taxi window at all the hotels that looked the same, my mum making sure the cabbie wasn't running the meter up.

I was thrilled when I found this video it indeed brought me lots of memories when we used to go to Greece from Beirut to visit my grand parents who lived in Thessaloniki we used to land at East terminal by MEA and transfer to West terminal for Olympic Airways for our final destination Thessaloniki what a sweet memories which I missed tremendously. You've done a great job "Μπράβο σού".

Starboard76, I want to thank you for this great video. It has brought back so many memories of my child hood spent on the nearby beach watching these wonderful aircraft landing and taking off. Alas, that is no more. I loved that old airport too. Sure it was run down and a little on the tatty side, but it had soul. Many thanks again.

The good old times when Olympic was the real one, and the good old airport...

This is one of the best LGAT videos I've ever seen.I was lucky enough to live close to this magnificent airport and I have great spotting memories of it. And one last thing, duration of the video: 7:42! just like the SX-OAB,SX-OAC, SX-OAD and SX-OAE!

Thank you, and yes you are correct, it certainly did have soul and character! A very interesting operational layout..but of course because it was restricted by it's growth.

What a feeling: - it's very early 2000's - it's a beautiful hot morning - you're starting at a still operating 747-200 - I'd like to picture having a cup of coffee and a cigarette on that rooftop. - you're at an airport that now does not exist. Is there a time machine i can use RIGHT NOW?!?! 😭😭

I filmed B747-200 Olympic Eagle SX-OAB on a flight from NYC to Athens. Remember it as a memorably nice flight. This AC is the one now in storage at the old Hellinkon airport.

It's gonna be torn down i heard. At least keep the historic Eero Saarinen east terminal.

The sleek lines of the A340 reminiscent of the classic B707 and the blue OA cheatline reminiscent of Pan Am, the company - jointly with Boeing - responsible for ushering in mass transit jet age.

02:20 that's still RWY 33R like the previous landings, not 15. Nice video, brings back memories...

@flashbiddy thansk, and very true, a giant is no more. I'm only pissed because Olympic never sent the A340 on any of my visits to Heathrow, it always seem to come after I've gone on to another city. But I'm happy with my Olympic collection and happy to share it!

@@John1212168 Είναι βλέπεις που το αεροδρόμιο του Ελληνικού δεν θα ξεχαστεί ούτε εννιά χρόνια μετά ούτε είκοσι που έκλεισε προχθές ούτε και χίλια χρόνια μετά . Εγώ όσο ζω θα ελπίζω ότι θα επανενεργοποιηθει έστω και τελευταία στιγμή . Κι ας ξέρω ότι οι ελπίδες είναι λίγες . Ας έβλεπα για άλλη μια φορά το 747 με τους κύκλους να δίνει στοιχεία για απογείωση από τον 33Rή τον 15L ή να προσγειώνεται στο Ελληνικό μας κι ας πέθαινα .

@@KO-zh4yq δυστυχώς τέτοιες μέρες δεν ξαναγίνονται. Ελληνικά 747 κτλ.. Εδώ και οι πλούσιοι που τα έχουν σήμερα (τα 380 δηλαδή σήμερα) βλέπεις ότι τα αφήνουν γιατί η τρόπον τινά πανδημία τους τσάκισε και αυτούς. Και λέω τρόπον τινά γιατί είτε την φτιάξανε, είτε την εκμεταλλεύονται για οικονομικούς λόγους. Κάνει μπαμ πλέον.. Τέλος πάντων..

Είναι δυνατόν να μην έχει τελειώσει η δεύτερη καραντίνα , να μη μπορεί να πάει κάποιος από τα Χανιά στο Ρέθυμνο για δουλειά ενώ ο τουρίστας να έρχεται από 10000 χλμ μακριά για διακοπές και να μας λένε για τρίτο κύμα το φθινόπωρο ; Που το ξέρουν ; Και πόσο βουγια νομίζουν ότι είμαστε ; Για να έρθει λέει τουρισμός να ανασανει η οικονομία ... Η αλυσίδα έχει όμως πολλούς κρίκους . Για να δουλέψει ο τουρισμός λίγο να παγώσουν οι υπόλοιποι πολύ . Για τις καφετέριες,τα καταστήματα,τα συνεργεία, τα ανθοπωλεία δεν μιλάει κανείς ; Αυτός που πάει στη λαϊκή να πουλήσει τα προϊόντα του μπας και μπορέσει να ταισει τα κοπελιά του δεν τον λυπάται κάνεις; Το μόνο που μας νοιάζει δηλαδή είναι ο ξένος με τα σανδάλια και τις κάλτσες που θα είναι ολ ινκλουσιβ και θα παραγγείλει one tzatziki for three people ; Μόνο δουλοπρέπεια ; Καθόλου περηφάνια ;

@Shane028 yeah, it's funny, at 1st I hated the A340 (I viewed as a 707 ripoff - a dedicated boeing fan too)..but it grew on me.. now I hunt down A340s like crazy as they are limited in number!

Im more of a boeing fan and while the the 747 is my absolute favourite, i have to admit the a340 is a stunning aircraft

I think i flew on all 4 of them in the early 2000's. I remember when they were shiny and brand new in september of 2000. The last time i flew the A340 it was filthy. I'm very angry that they shutdown Olympic. Crime of the century.

Considering how old those 747's Olympic had were, they must have had really good pilots for them not to crash.

It's amazing how this company came to an end!!! How did they managed to destroy this carrier!!This was the dream of Aristotelis Onasis and some people they didn't respect and bring the company to nowadays situation the sell everything ,unacceptable !!!

Those were the days!!! A different era of travel, when each seat had an ashtray! The flight attendants were sexy and people didn't fly dressed in pajamas and slippers like as if they rolled out of bed and all the sudden they were at the airport... Yeah the onboard entertainment sucked back then but you didn't care because the seats were big enough for you to have leg room, recline the seat and go to sleep. Not like these days where they cramp as many seats in to a flight and if you're over 6 foot tall and flying economy you have to squeeze in to the seat while your knees are hitting the seat in front of you for 10 hours... Also back then you got 2 big meals, now you get one small disgusting meal that you can barely eat. The airline food has gotten ridiculously disgusting. Back then your bag weighed more then you and no one cared, now your bag is half a kilo overweight you have to pay some ridiculous amount of money... Back then there was no personal entertainment system but they allowed people to walk up and down the isles and talk, the back of the OA airplanes was the social section, also the smoking section! ... Great times!

So very true. Not to mention that you we need to practically need to strip down so you can get on a plane because the powers that be decided to bring a couple of buildings down. What a farce. It's one thing after another with these yahoos.

​@@tafnamtaf8909 The food was great onboard Olympic, I still have forks, knives and spoons with the Olympic Airways logo engraved in them, I use to keep them as souvenirs lol..... Stainless steel utensils back in the day!... Not the plastic take out crap they have nowadays.

And senseless attitudes like this is what makes me not want to share the other 99.9% of rare video footage I have. "Just put out to there and let people take it...I tell you what, you go and invest in laptops severaliPads & iPhones... then stand on a street corner and give them away...then I'll be happy to 'just give away video clips to whoever wants them'... FYI - Rare footage gets more valuable like anything else over time. In addition to that my footage has appears on several news cast.

One of the greatest single runway airports around, traffic at Eleftherios is nothing compared to what fly through Hellenikon!

Distracting? Hmmmm,do I care more about people hijacking and stealing my videos..OR do I care about a distracting watermark? Tell you what, I see you haven't been made any videos yet..go make some decent videos or go back into the past and get stuff like this video (which is very rare now) and you put it out there to be stolen by anyone. And it's happening now more and more.

You really can see why olympic collapsed, the fleet was so old, and the older something is , the more it costs to maintain

kye rosendale actually, it was mismanagement..Onassis ran it like a private toy (which for him it was)..and when the state took over, it was too late to adopt a whole new attitude (work ethic). Basically, the same path (fate) as Pan Am & TWA.

+kye rosendale Well the fleet was kinda old indeed, but that's not the the reason it collapsed. American for instance had, until recently, quite an old fleet too. What caused Olympic to go bankrupt and disappear from the radar was the exact same reason the Greek state itself is bankrupt. You had for instance an army of incompetent people who received insane wages , poor strategic decisions, etc etc. Olympic was a state owned business which wasn't competitive anymore with the likes of Aegean Airlines, which emphasized on major hubs and alliances (e.g. Frankfurt with Star alliance), whereas Olympic flew destinations such as Sydney or NYC on its own. But the bottom line is that this airline was horribly mismanaged when it became state-owned, Onassis knew exactly how to run a business, unlike our incompetent politicians in Greece. Just to give you an idea, he was about to order Concordes when his son died (and right before he lost interest and gave the company to the state). A carrier which has more or less the same issues in Europe at the moment is Air France. Same mentality (i.e. not bothering to perform well-don't care), same structural issues.

+Starboard76 I don't think so, regarding work ethic. It may have been Onassis' hobby, but he knew how to run a business. He was about to buy Concordes when he gave Olympic away to the state. And the state in turn made this airline a huge mess. Corruption, mismanagement, the exact same things that got us in such deep sh**t in Greece. A country doing the exact same mistakes with its own public owned corporations is France, which has the same structural problems Greece had and still has...As for TWA and Pan Am, they mainly collapsed because of poor strategic decisions, and some mismanagement, too (wrong hubs for TWA with St Louis- bad acquisitions for Pan Am with National airlines- most profitable routes cut, etc etc).

Jools VK Pan Am collapsed because the US government did not allow the airline to operate domestic routes, even after deregulation, allowing American and United to create hubs where passengers can transfer between domestic and international flights, but not allowing Pan Am to do that.

I've flown on one of OA's A340s, in the mid-2000s, on a short flight from CDG to the new ATH. Great experience. I'll miss the A340s.

I've also flown them from Toronto to Athens vice versa at least 5 times. I liked the A340's as well and it's a shame how they ended up abandoned like orphans. They really suited the Olympic livery, and a much needed replacement from the dinosaur 747's they had.
