Any reason why my figs look like they aren’t growing anymore? I water every other day last year I had so many ready but this year it looks like the growth of the figs are slowing down. Any suggestions? I have about 70 figs on my tree lol I want to be able eat at least half lol

vito fall normally figs go through three stages of swelling: from a double-bump at the node to a little figlet, from a little figlet to a nickel-sized fig, and from a nickel-sized fig to swollen and ripe. Figs seem to sit at Stage 2 forever. They seem to sit as a nickel-sized fig forever. Then, suddenly they’ll swell practically overnight. If your fig trees have slowed down their green growth, that’s a good sign they’re switching their energy to ripening. You just have to be patient. It isn’t easy.

Just got an I258 cutting and can't wait to grow my tree! Every reaction to this variety has the taster saying OMG in total shock of how good it is.

Thanks! I've tried for years to root an I-258 with no luck. I finally bought a rooted cutting and it's growing beautifully!!! My I-258 is covered with figs so this will be my first taste of this fig. After watching this video, I'm even MORE excited to try this variety !when the fruit starts to ripen in a few weeks!! I love your videos. Educational and inspirational!

Glad to hear you got one! It's a fantastic fig. I'm not sure if you're growing it in a container or in ground. If you're growing it in ground, the figs it produces the first 1-2 years won't be representative of the mature product. After the fig tree puts down roots and gets large, it really produces large figs. We're talking figs in the 60-75g range after a few seasons. If you're growing it in a pot, they probably won't get that large consistently. Now that my in-ground tree is on its 4th season, it can really make some big figs. @@TheMillennialGardener It took me 7 years to get a rooted I-258 . I raised it in a pot for the first year with no fruit set. But it's in the ground now, 3' tall, and has 27 figs, all still green. I've also noticed that fig quality improves as trees mature, so I'm very excited about my first taste test. Last year, my VdBs were attacked by SWD, which was heartbreaking. I started an aggressive IPM program to bring them under control, and hope to avoid them this year. My figs will all be individually bagged in ultra fine mesh bags this year. I'm also in NC, in the Charlotte area. Any words of wisdom about SWD controls that have worked for you if you've had to deal with them?

The only way I’ve found to control SWD is to bag the figs when they just start to begin swelling, and pray for no rain. Dry weather and bagged figs is the only thing that works. When they ripen properly and get that drop of honey in the eye, that keeps the SWD out.

I ordered both of these this summer, can hardly wait.

Thanks. I have an Olympian I purchased from Baker Creek Rare seeds. She was a tiny live plant. This is her third year. I’m in Maryland, so the figs are much later to ripen. This year are the most figs yet and loaded. She is approximately 5’ 6 tall and 6’ wide. More shrub like. I enjoy your channel.

zeppypaige me too! I have a Smith and Chicago Hardy almost ready, but I want to wait for the tree to produce a few more first. The first couple figs don’t seem to be up to par with the next few.

For a the perfectly ripe fig you have to wait for the tree to loosen it's grip on the fruit so never tug hard on the stem be cool and wait. lifting the fig up a little will be enough as it was with the Olympian.😎

Andrew Hunter I don’t think this fig could’ve gone more than another full day. It didn’t color properly, so I’m pretty sure it is just a common problem with the first couple figs. This fig was very very good, but I’m sure they will get a lot better as the season progresses.

It was a nice treat for her. Her eyes went wide. She wasn't expecting how good the figs would be!

The i258 only gonna get better taste the firs one is really good but after few they staring to get better enjoy thanks for sharing 👍👍👍

They look really good brother. Keep up the good work. One I need to acquire is Olympian. I still havent tried I-258 but just imagine when we taste them completely ripe.

After sampling the texture, I do think this was completely ripe. I think it's just that the "first fig" or two, or three, don't ripen normally for various reasons. I have another I-258 swelling and ripening and it looks different. It is much darker purple already, and the eye is blood red. This fig didn't have any red internals. I think the hormones just need to catch up on these figs...like they need to fall completely into "ripening mode" and the first few aren't all-in.

First year fig grower..two hardy Chicago and one Celeste and no budding figs yet. I did get them later in the season and Alaskan fish emulsioned them to help with pot shock so that may be why. Wish me luck on wintering them in Massachusetts lol

Frostydawg24 if you can keep them in the garage above freezing you should be alright. Look into a product called a Thermocube and a space heater. It’ll kick the space heater on when temps drop below 35. Nifty.

Good review. I have the arabic version of the italian 258 grown in a pot. The taste of the fruit is never comparable to the fruit from the mature tree, even though the pot fruit is very good but neither the taste nor the size is matching the mother tree fruit. It is good to know that the I 258 arabic version is called : Shihami and it is the best ever variety in Palestine, Palistine is the fig capital in the world because it is the homeland of the best varieties in the world. It is well known in Al Khaleel city, which is called now Hebron. In other cities in Palestine it is called : Qulaibi. The only one problem with Shihami veriety is being a slow growing. In our culture the Shihami fig tree is a must have in nearly every home garden if the owner is interested in figs.

Olympian is a good fig, but not in the same league as I-258. It is a fresh tasting peachy fig. The I-258 is deep, rich and syrupy. At least that’s how they are first year. I am curious to see how they’ll both do as they age.

Love your videos my friend. You’ve done an awesome job with your trees! How do you keep the birds from stealing them while you are away?

Thank you! I really appreciate that. Luckily, I have not had a problem with birds. Maybe it is because my trees are too small for them to land on yet? My problems where I live are insects. The ants, leaf hoppers and wasps are crazy where I live.

I’ve got some in the ground but after following along with you now for a while, I’m changing gears. I plan to do a new variety in pots. I will be using your methods, fertilizer, etc. I don’t believe you could have done anything better. That I-258 is amazing! I’m high bidder one one right now, but I have been beaten every time so far. Please keep the camera rolling!

I 258 is not a honey fig and always has a reddish interior / berry flavor on any of the sources I can find. Can you double check what fig it actually is? I am curious since you say it tastes delicious. If you bought it as I 258 it was probably mislabeled. (if you mentioned this in another video then please tell me where to find it)

What about texture which one do u think has a more firm texture it looks like Olympian but what do u think?

Olympian has a much firmer texture. Olympian tastes and feels like peaches. To someone who has never had a fig, you could probably blindfold them and tell them it's a peach and they may believe you. I-258 is much softer, more syrupy and runnier. The two textures are very different.

Can’t be the second day my leafs are drooping. It’s a very hot summer this year. Almost every 2 days I need to water.

Olympian is very common. A Google search will return many sellers. They're even sometimes carried at big box stores. You can check Figbid and many online nurseries like One Green World, Just Fruits and Exotics, etc.

Dayum, you should make an Only Fans for your figs.
