Olivette Cocktail Recipe - Cocktails After Dark - Glen And Friends Cocktails after dark
This classic cocktail comes from the 1934 cocktail manual called "My New Cocktail Book" by G.F. Steele. This is a classic gin cocktail that uses bitters and absinthe to really enhance the flavours found in a dry gin. This post prohibition era cocktails book really lays the groundwork for the coming golden age of cocktails.
Olivette:
1 jigger Dry Gin
3 dashes Orange bitters
3 dashes Absinthe
2 dashes Gum syrup
dash Angostura bitters
Strain in cocktail glass, put in Olive, twist lemon peel on top and serve

I didn’t quite get Glen’s love of Dillons until I had it in a simple Gin & Tonic and was blown away. It’s now my go to for a G&T.
Have you ever made any recipes like this with Gin's predecessor called Jenever or Genever? I never heard of it until recently but learned it was the drink that inspired the Brits to make gin. It might be interesting to see how some of the standard gin recipes we all know change with the other liquor.

Watched the video and made it. Absolutely wonderful! I used Roku Japanese gin. I have my absinthe in an atomizer so I gave it 3 'sprays". I was concerned before mixing but in the finished product...everything works well together and nothing, other than the gin particularly stands out. The olive was odd but it also really works as a garnish and great little treat at the end. Lemon garnish is a must. Outstanding...thanks so much!!

I first encountered and brought some Ungava home from a visit to Montreal several years ago - really enjoyed it. You can sometimes find it now in Washington State.

My first and only bad hangover came from drinking gin...I avoid the stuff because I'm afraid the smell or taste would trigger sickness lol
HI GLEN! My friend and I are big fans, we watch your show every night. We love your ice cream videos and has a suggestion. Pickle ice cream. It seem like the perfect thing to add to your arsenal of strange ice cream flavors.

Loved the video, as always! Say, do you have a recipe for a “Depth Bomb” in any of your books? My husband just watched W.C. Fields in the “Bank Dick” (1940) and he ordered one. My husband hasn’t been able to find the drink on the internet.
Nice cocktail recipe but I might need to substitute for the gin. It was my favorite spirit when I was young until I ... overdid it one night. After that, even juniper berries might make my eyes cross.
Since you like Gin. May I recommend the Japanese gin: Roku. My personal favorite.
I'm laughing my ass off at the word "rimming" being censored out from the subtitles.
This makes me want to drink alcohol again. But I am not going to. But I can see how this is virtually a chemistry experiment

there a copy of this book on Ebay but it's the 1930 print and the seller wants 1312.90, plus 50.00 for shipping
Interesting drink but I don't know how I feel about the briney taste of the olive paired with the liquorice flavor of the Absinthe.
Also known as a gin old fashioned with an olive garnish; or perhaps a gin sazerac?
Are there any good beer cocktails?

My dad and friends drank beer with Clamatta tomato juice splashed in it.
Trouble finding an unflavoured gum Arabic, which one did you use?
I do not drink alcohol, but I find myself watching these every week because I just enjoy your videos!
Maybe next time do one without the Absinthe and see if it makes a difference or not, at least you would know.
My favorit gin drink is a GinGin mule, should be made with fresh ginger

Not a gin fan... So... For what it's worth, you might try coating the glass with absinth like a Sazerac. That way you get the character without the dominance (I guess you already achieved that). Seems like this recipe would work with almost any liquor. Brandy? Bourbon? Rye whiskey? Use rye and swap out the orange bitters for Peychaud's and it's pretty much a Sazerac. I'll drink to that! BTW - Can someone tell me what is a Nick and Nora? I know who Nick & Nora are/were but never heard the term referring to glassware.
