Olive and Donut attended a live event - pretty proud of how these amazing girls did! Leash review video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4Ok26dsoM6YfaQ.html
I've never done an event where I sat at a table and people came up and met my rats. That sounds like a super fun thing to do, and I would very much like to! But I have done the pet parade at my hometown's yearly festival for many years. They are usually quite a few people, especially kids, who would like to meet my rats and pet them, so I'm careful, of course, to only bring rats who are chilled out and comfortable around people. I hadn't thought of bringing treats to have people feed the rats, but that's such a good idea! I'm sure it would make my rats a lot more happy to do it, if they associated new people with treats and food.

Ahh that's so cool! I chose Olive and Donut for the same reason, both are quite chill and like people a lot so I wasn't worried about them spooking or nipping. The treats were definitely a hit, especially the liquid ones which encouraged licking (a lot of people would ask if they would bite first, so I would model it by first feeding some treat off my own hands, and then people were much more likely to say yes to doing it as well).
As a rattie owner for several years, I can say that rats are the ideal pet: intelligent, responsive, loving, and often hilarious in their antics and behaviors. The only downside is that they don't live for long. Maybe, one day, domesticated rats will live as long as cats and dogs? One can hope.
How wonderful, getting people used to the idea of having pet Rats to have and to hold. Those cages bring back memories of many years ago, myself being terrified at first. Yet, little did I know the love and joy three little ones can bring. Wonderful job Shadow, Olive and Donut, keep up the wonderful work and keep the Rattie Love growing and glowing everyone🐀❤☺.

YaY!!! Pepper likes to climb me and sit on my shoulder too. As soon as I take her out of her condo, lol, I attach her to my shirt like velcro and up she climbs. She feels safe and if scared she runs and opens the top of my shirt and climbs in. Then she will peak out with her head to see if its safe. Lolol. How I know she feels safe and comfortable is because she will start cleaning herself and take a treat. When Pepper is scared, she shakes and refuses food. Her twin Natasha was the opposite. For Natasha, food was food. Lol. Pepper is now 2.5 yo and cancer free. Thank you lord. 😊 I'm so proud of you.🥰

Lol exactly what I said when I saw all the other rats!
Two Halloweens ago my husband and I took our friendliest rat to the trunk or treat at my job. He just held Constance the whole time, she was too excited to be in her cage. The kids ADORED her, the parents not so much, but she loved it, sat on people, kissed people really changed a lot of people's thoughts on rats!

My 2 babies, Happy and D'Artanan are still a bit nervous about me but have started getting used to my smell. They are now 14 weeks old. They are spoilt rats, I watch your videos to learn more about what I can do to make them happier and comfortable. Roughly how long before they get used to me does it vary? Xx
I just love all your rats, I use to raise rats as a kid, and now again as an adult, and right now my girls, are still new, and I got a harness for them, and I feel like an idiot because apparently, I was putting it on wrong, though it didn't help that my girls weren't holding still for me to put them on. Anyways, love the video. I used to take my rats, when I was a kid to things like this, and they were great with people, but don't know if my girls now would be good with it or not, again love the video.
Comes down to one thing...trust. They trust you enough to relax and have fun. Glad to hear it went well.

They are such trusting little rats, definitely made the experience go better because they really like people in general.
2:04 OMG, is that a serpent on the left? 😳 It's really cool that a bunch of people brought all different animals to the event for people to see and experience, but I'd be afraid of the rodents freaking out being so close to that snake! 😬 I also find it really sad to consider what exactly those owners feed to their reptiles 😥 In any case, I'm at least glad people got to see some of your ratties and maybe hopefully their impressions of these creatures have softened somewhat and they gained an appreciation for how great rats truly are! ❤
@ShadowTheRat
2 жыл бұрын
Yup, there were quite a few snakes there. Pet rats don't really seem to care about predator smells in my experience though, either they had that instinct bred out or its a learned one that they never have a chance to learn. I was more afraid of the barking dogs behind us (not seen in the clips) scaring them, but they didn't seem fazed by them either (although the dogs were definitely intrigued in a less than good way by the rats lol - so I'm glad their owners decided to keep them well away from the rat table!) Its not all that uncommon for snake owners to also have pet rats, or breed pet rats alongside feeders - most snake owners do try to be very humane with feeding in my experience, doing frozen/thawed when possible or even using an alternative meat substitute (sorta like a lab block for snakes, only its hard to get many snakes to accept it). I couldn't have snakes myself, but I can see why people like them and given that it gets a lot of people into rat ownership as a side its pretty interesting to talk to people who have both.

They are amazing! Definitely do some research on proper care for them and make sure you get at least 2 but I would recommend 3. 2 are ok though! ❤️ they are really good pets and I would recommend them 100% just look into proper cages for rats, what toys and stuff they need in their cages, and how to bond with them etc and what their diet should have! They are amazing pets just make sure to do research

That's a big fear for me as well - actually earlier this year I was walking with Pickle on a harness outside and my neighbors dog charged me :/ The dog wasn't looking to hurt anyone, just excited to say hi, but of course I know that once he saw the rats it likely wouldn't have gone well. Thankfully my brother was with me so I had him distract the dog (who is people friendly) while I ran back inside. Anyways after that I stopped going out for a bit, then when I started up again I picked a time I notice my neighbors are rarely out (usually between 6 pm and 8pm here). I usually stick around my yard, and in this case we stuck to the part table for the most part which kept risks minimal.

@@ShadowTheRat I think my heart would skip a beat if that happened. I'm glad it ended well! I live pretty high up in a flat and I'd take the elevator to go outside. (So also no backyard.) Some people in my flat own dogs and they're not always on a leash when they come into the elevator to go on a walk. Maybe I'll see if I find some sort of rat pouch where I can keep them enclosed in where other animals can't reach, and let them out once I'm in a saver area. Do you have any experience with such pouches? (Video tip??)
Aaw were they pooped out at the end of the day?

A bit near the end of the event, but during the drive home they rested and by the time we arrived they were ready to play again lol. I expected them to be so tired at night but nope, they still ran around for hours! IDK how they do it but I'm glad they seemed to enjoy it!

I am a little concerned, if this isn't too much stress for those neophobic pets and if the harnesses aren't a choking hazard... plus the risk of them getting sick since pet rats don't have an immune system accustomed to being outside (unlike many cats or dogs). Please take those things into consideration when you introduce rats to an audience. But on the other hand, I am glad that you are taking steps to help improve the reputation of rats
@ShadowTheRat
2 жыл бұрын
The harnesses don’t go on the neck at all, instead going around their front limbs and crossing on the chest. They are perfectly safe in them, and my girls have used them for hours and hours well before I took them outside on them. That’s why people use harnesses actually - because it puts no pressure on the neck and prevents any damage to that sensitive area. As for them being neophobia that’s why I only chose my most confident rats. You can see that both girls were taking treats (something a scared rat won’t do), both were walking around and nicely relaxed when being held by people. I wouldn’t have taken them if I thought they’d hate it, and I’m happy to say they did an amazing job. They even did some trick there, and they have to be quite comfortable in order to respond to trick cues! Finally as for illness they were only kept on the table, and I take them for outside walks at home so they are used to that sort of going out. It’s still possible they could contract something, but not all that likely when they were being kept to their own area and away from other animals. Rats can only contract a few select things that aren’t passed on by rodents, so by limiting their exposure to other healthy rats and preventing them from going on the ground and encountering any bodily fluids like pee, you really reduce the chance of them contracting any diseases.
I don't know same people who have rats in South Africa pet rats is really not popular pet 😒
