I’d suggest personal security when you are in and around your car is important, and you should be considering it.
Number-one item on the ‘must have’ agenda there: a super-bright LED flashlight. (Bear in mind I’m not a lawyer. None of this report is legal advice.) This is the Olight Warrior Mini - my new, all-time favourite flashlight for everyday carry. It’s brilliant. (Yes - pun intended.)
Olight is huge in military and law-enforcement, especially in the USA. I didn’t even know they had an outpost here in ‘Straya. But they reached out to me, and here we are, reviewing the Warrior Mini, and it’s big brother - the Warrior X Pro.
Importantly, Olight has no influence over this report.
But why should you even carry a flashlight? (Especially if you’ve survived this long without one.) I mean, here in ‘Straya bad men tend not to ride over the hill, one evening and put everyone to the sword, inconveniently.
To which I would retort: When did Noah build the Ark? Before the rain, dude. Plus, this is not not all about defence and violence - it’s about support in a range of foreseeable situations, out there.
Such as, say you can break down somewhere remote, middle of the night. Try changing a tyre by Braille. You’d kill for a flashlight. Checking fuses. Seeing where all that water is leaking from. Or when you just dropped that screw, those keys … whatever, in the dark. I know you can do some of this with a phone.
But perhaps you drive around a bend, middle of the night, out in the boonies. There’s a crash. It’s a bad one. You’re the first responder. People are hurt. 20,000 serious injuries on Australian roads annually. This could easily happen to you.
If it does, you need to park your car to stop someone else crashing into you. You’re going to need a flashlight to assess the victims and help. Find your first aid kit, which I hope you are carrying. Gotta build the Ark before the rain.
Alternatively, you might just park one day in a nice, seemingly safe spot. Lots of people around. Broad daylight. You go off and … help cure cancer. Feed the homeless.
When you come back, it’s dark. You’re alone. Or, maybe, not alone, in the worst possible way. It’s not the same environment as before. Like, it’s just not. You are particularly vulnerable to attack getting into and out of your car, alone. And between the car and your home if you park on the street.

It's got nothing to do with torches, but after watching your video a while back about capacitor jump starters, I bought one a while ago and finally had a chance to use it on the weekend. I pulled into a Bunnings carpark and noticed an elderly couple with their bonnet up a couple of parking bays away. I had a chat to them and found out they had a flat battery, so grabbed the jump starter out of my car and had them going in no time. It was a sunny day and starting to get hot out in the sun, so I got to feel like a good bloke for the rest of the day and even my teen daughter who was with me had a good opinion of me. Like the Boy Scouts motto says, "Be Prepared".

These things are being reviewed on a heap of channels on here that I have seen and seem to be handed out like candy come the "Black Friday" US sales phenomenon. I love watching gear reviews but when you see the same product over multiple different channel types it does get a bit repetitive. Having said that I keep torches in our vehicles, backpacks and around the house so if this one is any good then go for it.

I've still got a 4 cell and a 6 cell Maglite. However, when comparing their light output with a modern LED flashlight (torch for those still living in the 17th century) the difference is astounding. With the 6 cell Maglite I can make out the trees at the back of my house. With my big LED light I scare the sh*t out of the squirrels.

Superb advice again JC. I got a similar version on AliExpress while ago. Bought them for wife and son's cars too it proved to be so handy. It is so similar to torches you talked of. Copycat?? I did get a small yellow cover for my torch too. In flashing strobe mode its superb on roof of car to warn oncoming cars somethings not right ahead. One other thing my Dad had in family car and told me to put in my car when I was a new driving kid, is a piece of wood that you cut to fit between seat cushion, or seat mount under carpet and brake pedal. I've been first or one of the first at a number of prangs over the years. I put hazard lights on then put wood onto brake pedal. That way cars behind see bright brake lights and hazards. With additional strobing torch too. Unless its being used by me around the crash. You did mention it but torch gets used most often searching for lost crap under seats! As the other JC said in John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it!

Flashlights are a good tool to disorientate someone but they won't make someone disengage. With multiple attackers standing in different locations around you the chances of you successfully fighting back with just a bright strobing flashlight goes down. Since you already have keys in your hand walking out to your car, you can put pepper spray or flashlight on a keychain and be gripping them ready to deploy.

The Lumens never change. The thing is the torch companies never mention lux. It is possible to have large lumens & if it doesn’t have a focused beam, it may not appear that bright.

Hi John. Here's a puzzler from an aspiring car tinkerer. I bought a fifteen year old petrol Subaru with 160000 miles on it for 2000 euros from someone who clearly hadn't taken good care of it. I put another 2000 euros into it with new brakes, struts, tires, fluids, filters and battery and now it runs like a dream. It would be easy for me to put my thumbs behind my suspenders and raise my nose to the people who called me an idiot for buying the car, but really? Was I doing something smart or am I just a very lucky idiot? I knew that the timing belt had been changed when I bought it.

I'd choose the Warrior X Pro. After a few seconds of purple spot generation, it has a built-in facial DNA sample collection function. I'd see it beneficial to be collecting that DNA for as much of your attacker's disorientation as possible to be of maximum utility to the authorities. Who knows, your attacker might just decide to depart if he/she felt the stock of DNA depleting.

@@stevej3483 Rubbish. There are millions of products being made in China which are highly spec'd and exclusive to parent companies all over the world. It's just outsourcing the manufacturing - which is necessary for countries that have no real manufacturing capability - like Australia. China can make things at any price point/quality. The only reason China gets a bad name is because countries like us don't ask (or pay) for the good stuff. It's our fault - we create the demand for cheap crap because we're cheapskates. Anyone who believes that China made a decision to make cheap products and sell them to us without our participation is ignorant - and probably racist.

Interesting until I saw the price, holey moley, do they come with a bar of gold? We use the little Fenix E25UE 1000 lumen (around $80ish) and the much bigger Aldi 1500 lumen torches that sell for just $30. The Fenix and the Aldi are both excellent and we have never had an issue with either. The Aldi would certainly be handy for self defence as a crack over the head with it would put off all but the most determined attacker and even those would be thinking twice.

I have a lot of high end flashlights, I have had better luck with Fenix than with Olight personally but Olight are not too bad. Surefire have been the most reliable for me but they are many more $$ than Fenix and Olight. My current EDC is a Fenix PD40R as a primary and a Fenix LD01SS as a secondary with a Zebralight H501 and Surefire P2X Fury in my first aid backpack. My previous primary EDC was a Olight Javelot M23 which I did like while it was working but after only a couple of months I could not change modes anymore, fortunately the mode I was stuck with was maximum output so I carried it for another year or so like that.
