Nice work, as always Jack. Appreciate your content and creativity! You fit a lot into a short vid. Straps... those figure 8 straps are crazy. When Thor was doing thumbless deads with all that weight... and now just finger tip holds. Everyone has access and in Strongman the deadlift is a test of back strength, so all things being equal for all athletes, seems ok. I saw Magnus in the pre-WSM meetings talking about having to at least maintain your thumb on the bar using straps, but I'm guessing that went out the door (just from a range of motion aspect). Best part for me was the water bottle carry... was thinking "there must be an Eddie Hall comment coming" and there it was! Keep 'em coming!

Straps are okay for me, grip is important but you're not trying to see who has got the best grip when you're deadlifting (especially if you have a hercules hold in the comp). And if you say it's less "functional", you're not lifing barbells in your day to day life, that's why strongmen lift odd objects like stones. Damn this became a wall of text

Casual lifter that cares about strength? No straps, so you don’t have to add training time to hit grip. Want to get the most out of strength training? Use straps! Great video as always!

He won the Arnold Amateur and has placed pretty well at the Arnold Classic. He's new on the circuit but he's not an unknown. If Thor, Mateusz, and Martins competed he may have finished 4th or he might have still won who knows. He was definitely a hot prospect for a couple years but I didn't think people expected him to win this soon. As for the gear, who knows. They can all take what they like but I don't think just doing more gear than others allowed him to win, he came in on point and outperformed others. He does advertise GH on his instagram stories lol

Coming from a completely casual fan of strength sports. I feel like deadlift after a certain weight doesn’t become a true feat of strength if it is being pulled with a suit, straps, and wraps. Obviously I’m not gonna try and sit here saying Eddie Hall and The Mountain’s 500kg deadlifts weren’t fucking dope as hell, legitimate, and I could never even begin to imagine reaching that weight. But in my simple opinion, strongmen, powerlifters, and any other strength based athlete are considered strong because they move weights that the average person can’t move, and they should do so without any type of assistance. That is how you truly know that it is the person that is moving the weight, not the person and then some help from the equipment. I honestly feel that if you don’t have the grip to deadlift a weight, you’re not truly lifting it. You might as well just squat the weight in my opinion. I fucking hate seeing equipped powerlifting records, stop trying to explain the mechanics of why they need to lift a certain way. Fuck it homie, either you can move the weight raw or you can get better. I’m just saying people, i hate seeing someone bench 800lbs, but with 2 slingshot sleeves, a bench shirt, an arch and some bullshit piece of wood marking when you’ve hit “depth”. Sorry for the rant, I know it kind of lost any organization after the first sentence.
