Which one? DC, Virginia, or NY? I'm assuming DC.
It sold for $360,500. It was acquired by (or for) the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery. John Quincy Adams apparently played a crucial role in the establishment of the Smithsonian . Adams "...tirelessly advocated for the implementation of James Smithson’s bequest to establish an institution dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge."

Harrison Ruffin Tyler is the living grandson of President John Tyler (the 10th President of the United States, born in 1790)
People forget he was the ONLY person to have met and known both Washington AND Lincoln... Not to mention ALL the other founding fathers.....ALL of them.
It's so exciting to see what an American President actually looked like in a photo that old. So fascinating.
I don't know why but I get the feeling that John Quincy Adams would have loved modern technology and evolution of it through 20th Century.

I've seen copies of this picture throughout the years, but I'm glad to know that the original survived. As far as I know, he's the first U. S. president to have his picture taken, period, let alone this being the oldest surviving picture of a U. S. president. I don't know for certain, but from what I've seen, that's the case. And, there's only five presidents who were in office before he was, and 1843 is around the time when pictures were starting to come to be, so I assume he really was the first to have his picture taken, at all.

You mean to say that any private good of any historical significance ought not to remain private property? You have apparently failed to acknowledge that it is that very profit motive which is everywhere responsible for the wide-ranging preservation of collectibles which eventually find their way into museums. Even the major pieces found in today's most popular museum exhibits have changed hands through private exchange, and it is those private collections which have invariably presented that opportunity for posterity to appreciate the items and exhibits which materially connect us with history. Ultimately, use of the word "should" proves everywhere an imprecise and reckless exercise. Moreover, this absurd statement conflicts with the very oath of office undertook by the president featured in that coveted photo, and I'm positively certain that anyone remotely educated on the failures of the Smithsonian would pause before granting it complete access to everything of historical significance. As demonstrated by your comment, it is far easier to strike a claim than to investigate its foundation, or in this case its lack thereof.

Photo's on real emulsion photographic paper will last a very long time if properly cared for. Digital Prints, using ink jet, won't last very long, after a while the ink will begin to flake off like an old painting. I was a professional photographer and I keep telling everyone for important photographs that you want to keep and pass down, use film.
OMG could she BE any more perfACT

Why not put it in the Smithsonian museum or a national gallery for the people to see. It’s a huge and very rare piece of American history. It needs to be treasured and displayed in an honorable manner.
