There's so many amazing Australian distilleries finally getting a foothold on the market outside of Australia. Cant wait for them to get more recognition

As a Melbournian, I honestly wasn’t aware of the history behind the lack of Melbourne whiskeys. I can confirm that Starward Two-Fold whiskey is the more commonly used staple in Australian bars. You perfectly outlined the strike in the market; high taxes and a monopoly of larger companies has not only meant that local distilleries are struggling, but breweries too

Sounds like the Canadian whiskey market. New entrants are basically locked out here. Practically every other form of alcohol is fair game(gin, vodka, beer, wine, liqueurs)

Haha the Aussies do say the ‘z’ in Shiraz, and interestingly some wines here made from the same grapes are still labelled Syrah to indicate that they are made in a more Old World, softer style than a Big Boi Barossa Shiraz, so Aussies know both words 😉. Great video, Starward Two Fold has been a game changer over here for bars wanting to do all Australian rail pours, and the Nova is my personal fave! Glad you got to try them.

I've always found Starward to make exceptional cocktail whiskys, so this is exactly the channel for it. A coffee old fashioned with two fold and Mr Black makes for a great purely Aussie cocktail.

The costs associated with whiskey production is expensive and thus the whiskey made here is relatively expensive and on a smaller scale compared to overseas distillers. It sucks if you need to spend $120 aud + for a decent bottle

That history of the Australian whiskey industry was super interesting- glad to hear it’s coming back now. Tasmania having a similar climatic conditions to Scotland threw me for a loop too. Thanks for the informative video!

I am loving Australian whisky! Superb history! Much appreciated! I have either brought back Australian single malt whisky or friends visiting have brought some and oh am I ever appreciative! I love their peated whisky! I enjoy Starward and a couple of other distilleries! and I think the quality is extremely high! Fabulous video Leandro!! I hope all is super well!! Cheers!! 🙂P.S. I say Melbourne - like Melburn - it's how locals seem to say it and friends but a friend married an Australian so maybe her way of pronouncing might be impacted as a Canadian. Her hubby also says Melburn! I guess it can be pronounced in different ways! Nice to get the bottles! This is whisky I'd drink often if I could get it more often!! The Vitalis is my fave by far!! Scotch is my jam over everything else so these single malts are very appealing. I am happy to have a couple of bottles of Vitalis on hand! It's sure not easy to obtain - not in Canada anyway - we can't order in. Yay for visits to Melbourne and friends coming to visit!🙂Cheers!

Limeburners from Albany, Western Australia is another nice drop

Huge fan of Old Hellyers Road distillery in Northern Tasmania. They are in the process of going public and seeking investors. I have been there too. Great distillery lunch & tour. Never had a bad drop from them.

You're tasting with Glencairns. Fantastic. It's really the best glass for sampling hard spirits.

Lark in Tasmania. A single malt that brings tears to the eyes (in a good way). Cannot recommend it enough. Sweet and weirdly has a smoky edge despite not being peated.

Interesting. Most international whiskies I’ve seen are made from barley.

I studied in Australia for a period of time, and I don't know anything about Australian whisky! The only local Aussie spirit what I know about is the Bundaberg rum.

An answer to a question I didn't even know I was interested in. Love this kind of video on trivia about beverages. Meanwhile Marius just dying behind the camera about "the smell of deez nuts"

You should definitely check out Archie Rose both single malt and rye if you get the chance. They are based out of Sydney and have won many awards.

Great vid on the history of Aussie whisky! Starward is a solid whisky, so is Lark. But if you like big, bold in your face whisky, go any of Overeem’s cask strength releases

You pronounced Shiraz correctly the first time. The wine industry in Australia is way bigger than the spirits industry as it should be. Without the wine, you can’t have all the finishes you have with whisk(e)y plus there is a lot more diversity in wine.

Would love to see you taste more Australian spirits and how you feel they compare to the world’s stage. I know I’m bias but I know we already produce some of the best wines in the world and I would be interested to see if our spirits are getting to that level also.

Is this available anywhere I’m willing to buy it if it’s available. Big single malt fan so some of these sound great. Seelbach maybe or other online stores? Great review. Enjoy!!

Kind of ironic to have Starward in a video talking about overseas companies buying out all the Aussie whisky makers, when the same thing is happening again - Starward is mostly owned by Diageo these days.

You’d be hard pressed to find a popular brand that wont take money from a conglomerate these days but I get the irony to further the irony the distillers company of Edinburgh is now Diageo since 1986!

So Melbourne, Brsibane, and Darwin all kinda have the same end pronunciation 😂 you had it on your first correction Bonus, Canberra is just Canbra

See if you can get your hands on Manly Spirits whiskey. They also do fantastic gins and vodkas

Wait for it… 100% Pure Agave Spirits are being produced…it’s not tequila but it’s very tasty

Syrah and Shiraz are different grapes in Israeli wines there’s a lot of both 🇮🇱

Correct me if im wrong but i was taught that if the spirit comes from a country with a letter “E” in it, whisky would be spelled whiskey? So the editing team needs some explaining to do…or does it accept states as well?

We spell whiskey the way we spell it and other parts can do what they want. We don’t change our spelling based on where the whiskey is from it’s the same word spelled differently. There’s your explanation 😂

A week after his trashyness house party (mind u this is MYSPACE era 'we still love u TOM' the government imposed a alchopop tax where upto 25% markup was added onto the final price. The housing crisis, cost of living, terrible public transport, unstable internet, barrier reef dying, offshore outsourcing, constant droughts and bush-fires But what really grinds my gears in Australia is the insane tax on alcohol that continues to climb every year. At least Wine is cheap. But funnily enough, it just moves our alcoholics to cheap wine instead of good whiskey

There's nothing wrong with pronouncing the R in Melbourne. You're American, we get it. It's all about the emphasis. You have to put it on the MEL.

Lark is overrated overpriced swill… its reputation here has nosedived with the surge of newer distilleries. Tassy by far has the largest production, Hellior rd being one of the better ones. The problem we have though, is that our whisky, whilst being able to hold its own on the world stage, is young. Unaged and 12 to 15 year olds are priced as if they were 18 to 21 year old imports. In a decade or so, when there’s a more appropriate stock of young, semi matured and matured drops, the market will have its 2nd renaissance. Japan is currently going through this stage, with prominent brands cutting export numbers and putting out none age stated drops in order to age up their stock to meet global demand. The other issue is that almost every whisky has won some kind of award and that pushes up the price massively… for example, line burners port cask was $140/160 a bottle until it won 1 award and then it jumped to more than $280 a bottle. This is for a 12 year old btw… start up costs are too high, alcohol taxes are too high, distribution and sales deals take a greedy cut from distilleries, demand is too high and the result is a whisky you need to sell an organ to afford.

Say Melbourne in whatever way feels natural to you. Don't codeswitch just to appease idiots. You have a different accent than us and you always will. You don't walk into a Taco Bell and say 'Burrito' all weird do you?
