Older Polaris XCR, XLT Indy: How to adjust belt deflection and sheaves. Fix squealing or “creeping”

This is for the 1990s Polaris snowmobile such as XCR, XLT an Indy. If the snowmobiles are much older than this they are going to need a shim adjustment but on these ones it’s a very simple adjustment there are just no videos available on KZread that I could find to show people how to do this I made this short video. Hopefully this will help somebody

    That's awesome. That's what happens when I go to pull start our 98 xlt triple 600. I always noticed the squeal when pull starting the engine. Happens with both our 500 twin and 600 triple. Thanks so much. Great video.

    Easy explanation and a useful tip. I didn't know about having to remove a bolt to use the spreader tool. I replaced a belt in the past but I forgot how I did it (and I have the tool).

  • @rotorav8

    The bolt is super easy and super fast to remove making it faster than pushing back the rear secondary sheave (pulley half). Fighting the spring can be a bear. I can do it sure but some people would like to make life easy and some people have arthritis so it’s a cool tip. Newer sleds have a special hole for it. Older sleds require you remove one bolt. Honestly even being pretty strong and only 42, when my hands are freezing cold it gets harder. It’s a socket or wrench you should carry anyway.

    Yeah you want to either throttle it to engage and go or not. Slow throttle rolls will ruin a brand new belt. If you want to do slow take offs such as trail riding or trailer towing then you need to change the clutch springs and/or change your gearing but those are whole topics alone.

  • @rotorav8

    @@memmacat many people set them up to rev up and hit hard spinning the track. Trail riders hate those riders because they leave burn out bumps and hills. It also fries the belt if you want to slowly start. My tundra is clutched to take off smooth as butter. This is also really nice when you’re floating on deep snow and you don’t want to burn out, spinning the track and getting you stuck when you’re towing a trailer. I ride fresh deep snow a lot and use a trailer a lot.

    Thanks for the video I followed your advice. I'm surprised that turning a thin lightweight piece of metal on the outside of the secondary a couple inches to the right or left makes a difference. How does this mechanically work? Is there something inside going on when I turn that little metal ring that I can't see?

  • @rotorav8

    @rotorav8

    3 жыл бұрын

    The ring is like a tapered shim. In the past you had to remove the belt then remove the pulley before you could change out the shims to add or remove thickness as your belt wore or you replaced it with a new one. This is a much easier type of a shim that doesn’t require disassembly.

    I looked all over KZread and Internet I wish u had a better thumbnail/picture & title like a how to do belt deflection on old 1999-2003 clutches without or with tool u can also twist secondary while holding one side and slide the other side opposite way and the sheaves will spread apart & loosen belt without taking any bolts or tools out but I’m glad I know it’s not super hard because it says 10 lbs of torque and the torque wrench gone atm and the slead has been going great but it’s almost 3-1/2 and the old belt which was perfect except it had a burn mark tht was banging when it went around so I put in a belt from a 550 fan super-sport Polaris belt-#1178 instead of the Polaris belt-#1180 belt …practically it was the same length and width tht I could tell matching em up and it had no problems sense but I wanted to raise it up a little tiny bit cause I’ve seen videos on people saying the grooves should be above the top of the clutch sheaves not level with it so it needs tightened up a little to be perfect but I dnt want to make it worst or break anything cause I can’t fix anything else till summer and there’s a big storm coming anyways good video it could use a little enhancement But so does my English/grammar so let’s say fuck it and maybe I’ll make a new video of this and post it for relevant people tht are having this problems and can’t find the right thumbnail and title without wacthing every video like I had too

    Ive been twisting and pushing the back sheave on the secondary then using my cold hands to yank and pry the belt off for years, my whole life really. Yes, that works, but if you are cold and just want it to be simple or maybe someone isnt as strong as us then it is so nice and easy to screw a little tool in and simply remove and replace the belt. I look at it like a an electric start with a pull start back up. CAN you pull start it? sure but its sure nice to push the button. On my sled I had a heavy secondary spring in there so it didn't open up so early because i like to pull sleds and it also gets the RPMs up before it tries to shift so early and brings it down. I noticed better fast performance and better towing trail performance. That heavy spring makes changing belts suck a lot when done the old way. If I set my belt as high as you say it causes the creep to start and makes a lot of drag when pull starting making that really suck too. It also wears flat spots in the belt when idling in one spot destroying your belts. Thats how mine was set when I got it.

    @@rotorav8 thanks for the reply yeah I tried ur tool method worked really easy jst like the 550 fan because it had a tool and the 800 xc sp didn’t come with a kit when I bought it the belt had a burn mark like u said but the whole bottom end was gone cause the rear spring housing was broke I had to have a custom rod with a curve and shock in the middle I had one made at a tool shop my buddy did it but I jst wanted to switch the belt out cause it was making noise and I forgot and didn’t want the indent/burn mark to ruin my clucth but I wasn’t trying to be rude I jst was saying this is a really hard thing to find on KZread and I think we could make more videos about it to help people find em
