Solid advice. I rolled with Roy a few times in North Carolina shortly after getting my purple belt. I can attest for anyone who finds this on KZread that Roy's pressure and control is almost shocking, especially in light of the fact that he's a perfectly normal sized guy. Just as he describes here, he neutralizes the typical athleticism "advantages" (younger, stronger, bigger, faster, etc.) in short order. By the time he started hunting submissions, I was desperate just to get out from under him. Some of the more memorable rolls of my BJJ career thus far.

As a 65-year-old Brown Belt I didn't find this very useful, as it assumes you can get on top to apply pressure. My own game is based on being perfectly happy on the bottom, or the top, and "inspiring" my partner into working harder. I consider it a victory if each person I roll with ends up bright red and puffing....

ideally, I'm on top yes. But, in the video I explicitly talk about playing guards that limit movement and maximise control so that I don't have to outpace or outwork my opponents. I also prioritise guards where I can use my weight from the bottom and use the power of overhooks and underhooks rather than grips and open guards that allow too many options. Lastly, I prioritise sweeping as my guard action so I can try to get on top if possible. I discuss this some in the video

I'm 49 and I've been in BJJ about a month now at Triad BJJ in Archdale NC. It has been exhausting chasing these young guys around and I was getting hurt in some way every class. I did the things in this video today and it changed everything. The young guys were exhausted and I actually got a blue belt in side control (hopefully, he didn't let me). Everything in this video was right on. Right down to a guy trying to bench press me off. I will definitely be following Roy's advice going forward.

59 and overweight. I started GJJ 3 weeks ago and love it ! I’ve been an mma junkie since UFC 1. I do have one concern…I have never had knee issues but since starting GJJ class my knees are stiff and sore. I ordered some asics gel knee pads and hope they will help. Thoughts ? And at 5’10 245 I hope to learn your weight n pressure game. Thx !

Prof, this is great advice, and here's the BUT... What if you've come to grappling late (eg 60) and you never learnt the heavy pressure top game, and it never feels like you'll ever learn the heavy pressure top game because you're always the recipient of someone else's game. I'm 12 months in and learning how to survive and escape but rarely do I get on top. These young guys come at meet like an express freight train. I can contain them and came them done, but a pressure top game seems a long way off. What are your top 3 recommendations for the older new grappler who wants to get into a position to use a pressure top game? Tnx

Great question! First, I would focus on learning to defend and escape as well as learn more control based guards first. This is true of everyone who starts jiu-jitsu. That should be your first priority, Second, talk to some of your training partners and ask them to let you practice just being on top. Ask them not to try hard to escape or to put you in guard - or, if they do, to let you start back in a dominant position. I have to imagine you have some training partners who are relaxed and humble enough to let you do this, Third, set small goals. Don't even worry about submissions. Make your victories things like passing a guard or escaping a mount or pinning someone for 30 seconds. If you make your goals big (tap the 20 year old beast, for instance) then you will always be disappointed. I'll add one thing. I don't escape side control to guard very often. I usually fight for underhooks and come up to my knees for waste control (see Lucas Leite's Coyote Guard for an example). Underhooks and escaping back to having my hips facing down is a huge part of what gets me on top. I#m not trying to be cheesy and plug my stuff but I do have a seminar I filmed about escaping pins that I sell (very cheap) if you're interested. graciemuenster.com/store/ Let me know if this helps or if you have more questions!

@@roymarshjiujitsu Prof, Thanks for taking the time to answer. I am fortunate to have a couple of excellent instructor who will roll (for 15mins!!!) in order for me to 'see' things by doing 'catch and release'. This, and a crappy knee) took us to side escape->half-guard with underhook->slight back climb->seat belt. All good. Then the leap to full pressure execution.....It will come, I know. I admire you ugly, lovely, pressure game. Executing it slowly, powerfully and crushingly at minimal exertion. Thats the goal. But let me bring in another of your videos too. The 5 S's. Now when I get into that half-guard-ish position, my first response is stand-up. That response, more than anything, get admiring comments from the 20 y'olds. I'm going to be seeing Ross H next week (whom I think you know well). I'll be getting his assistance on this matter. I'll look at your video now. Again, thanks for taking the time to respond

I think you are never too old to start training. I will say, however, that not every gym is the same. Some gyms are great places for people of all ages to train and some I would steer very far away from as they won't be concerned with people's safety. Go visit and speak to the instructor. If everyone there is between 18-28 and the techniques seem designed for an elite athlete then you're not going to find a good fit - even if you are in good shape.
