The twists are insane in this movie! One of the movies that opened my eyes to Korean cinema! The eating octopus scene is real. The actor is actually vegetarian but he ate it for the scene!

He is not vegetarian. Min-sik choi had an interview in 2004 that he is not vegetarian. He said he heard about the rumor him being vegetarian but he isn't. He also said he felt sorry for 4 octopuses that were killed for the scene.

His painfull smile at the end showed us that HE is the monster. Hypnosis went wrong like she warned him about and now he has to live with it but now he truly loves his daughter. Basically he (now the monster) goes along with it.

I'm a Korean. I write using a translator. The reaction to the octopus eating scene is impressive. I'll give you the information there. In fact, in Korea, there is a menu where octopus is eaten raw. Only octopuses that live in tidal flats are eaten alive. It's a food culture, so don't look at it too strangely. However, it is exaggerated in the movie. It is rare to eat such a large octopus whole. In the old days, we used to eat it like that. This is because there are cases where an octopus gets caught in the throat and suffocates. Originally, it was cut into small pieces and eaten with sesame oil sauce. Of course, we don't cook it and eat it alive. I like it too. In some cases, live octopuses are eaten whole, but only small octopuses are eaten. ah! And the octopus eating scene is not computer graphics. It's real. In the movie Kong: Skull Island, the scene where King Kong catches and eats a similarly monster squid is said to be an homage to Oldboy. I used a translator. Please understand even if the sentences are strange.

50:44 He can NOT just kill the villain while the daughter is being captive and PLUS, if the daughter knows the whole story, how will she live the rest of her life, mentally. You know he would even sacrifices his life for his daughter, from the perspective of this movie. That was the ONLY way to say sorry, so that the villain MIGHT let it go, you know that.

Park Chan-wook is very talented director. You should also check Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and Lady Vengeance (2005), these belong to the "Revenge Trilogy" with Old Boy. And I can also warmly recommend the films Joint Security Area (2000) and The Handmaiden (2016) of his also :)

So you asked about the octopus scene. He did eat it live in real life. 8 times. A bit of movie trivia here is that the actor Choi Min-sik, is a devout Buddhist and so is vegan (or vegetarian I can't remember). He did 8 takes of that scene and prayed before each take with each of the 8 creatures he ate. Some people think that means he actually doesn't stand by his values so he's a bad Buddhist and some people think hey he's an actor he put them aside. Also, Mi-do's name is a Korean word that means "trust" or "believe". When she says "I'm Mi-do" it sounds similar in Korean to saying "believe in me" or "trust me" in Korean. Even Koreans watching this would just hear it as a normal name (like someone being called May, you just hear their name as May and don't tend to think of the month, or at least don't think about it too much) but it does mean "believe".

Dae-su could not kill Woo-jin immediately knowing the truth because the box for Mi-do could be opened anyway. After Woo-jin decided not to open the box, Dae-su could try to kill him. Soo-ah, Woo-jin's sister, was scared of being pregnant. So she decided to suicide while Woo-jin could not. Woo-jin's suicide was the last, final revenge for himself. He was scared to die and let Soo-ah do it.

At Korean food stalls you can order live baby octopus to eat. Live full grown octopus is kind'a extreme, though.

The very last ending scene of his face shows that the hypnotize eventually didn't work. The massive shock that he received just way over passes the supreme hypnotize effect that works so well on him. He would just have to "pretend" for his daughter's sake.

To answer your question about the octopus scene, the answer is yes, it is real. From the IMDb trivia page for the film: Four live octopodes were eaten for the scene with Dae-su in the sushi bar, a scene which provoked some controversy abroad. Eating live octopus in Korea is commonplace although it is usually sliced first. When the film won the Grand Prix at Cannes, the director thanked the octopodes along with the cast and crew. Choi Min-sik (the actor who plays Oh Dae-su) is a Buddhist and had to pray after eating the octopi.

@@TheNerdyverse-DannyReacts There's quite a lot of insane stories about behind the scenes stuff in a wide variety of films that have wild things that happened (and the scene in Oldboy was planned). For example, in Django Unchained, during the scene where Candy slices his hand in a fit of anger and then wipes his blood on Broomhilda's face was not planned. Leonard DiCaprio actually sliced his hand by accident, but stayed in character. Kerry Washington's shocked reaction to having Leo's blood wiped onto her was her genuine reaction.

Haven't read the manga, but my theory goes along with Evergreen's last statement. I'm paraphrasing but I think it was, "My sister and I came to terms with who we were and still loved each other. Can you and Mi Do, (his daughter), do the same?" It looks like perhaps. Although being tongueless is quite a handicap. If Oh Dae Su's memory is truly clear of Mi Do being his daughter, they may be able to manage. However, he may want to use those scissors somewhere else or there may be complications.
