They helped build America. Was a sad day when those blast furnaces were demolished.

growing up in Pitts. hated the mills so much. The polution, the noise, the air, what I saw it do to the old man and how they treated him when his health failed. So now it's all gone why do I feel sad?

Because now people canmot survie and feed their families. The companies got greedy, and taxes among other.things made sure american steel would cost more.inflation 1970s. Now Bidens Agenda 2030 and going bring.inCommunism, criminals and crash our economy once and for good. He's just here.to break americans backs. But we are sad because now people come last. Good bemefits, hard work labour jobs which paid well enough to own a nice home are.gone.

Can you imagine what it must have been like working in this place and living in one of those boarding houses across the tracks, in the 1940s!? All the noise, the smoke, the dirt everywhere, the sense of purpose, of skill, of pride in your country and the pain of everyday labor in the very pits of Hell? Mixed emotions and worries, wondering if your draft number would come up next, while making more money than anybody back home had ever seen, all the while being alone with your family back home and sending every spare penny to them, excluding enough to go down to the beer garden and get drunk, now and then. Fear was a part of it, this was one of the most dangerous work places around, even more so than the mines, but you had to suppress that fear to do your job. Meanwhile, the papers were full of battles and causality counts, honored Soldiers and war bond drives. There wouldn't be a bit of scarp iron in town and little litter, it would all have gone to the furnaces and paper mills, struggling victory gardens, trying to grow in the poisoned air and earth and the kids would be trying to grow up in that same poisoned air, while doing their part for the war effort. And the coke dust and the fly ash and the soot from the steam trains would cover everything around you. Those were "The Greatest Generation", a title well earned and they knew their lives were cheap but the job had to be done. So many paid the price for that steel, sometimes suddenly, sometimes later as their lungs and hearts gave out, that must be one of the most haunted places in the country. And now, it's over. The mill is coming down and the boarding houses soon after but the poisoned earth will remain for a thousand years. Perhaps the memories will too.

I just bought an HO scale model of a steel mill now I'm learning how to make steel . I know it's easier to see what needs to be done in a scale model.I have developed a new mold for poring aluminum. I talkedto the people at the foundry and they told me my way us faster and easier. Than the way they make molds.these men who worked hard at these mills are my Herros .they went though hell and back to put food on the table to feed their families. And pay their bills.they were willing to sacrifice their lives for their country .many people died when accidents occurred. We will probably never even know their names.

Actually, the "best" iron as steel comes about refining molten iron from the blast furnace generally in a basic oxygen furnace (BOF).
