As someone who has owned lots of V8 Mustangs, lots of V8 pickups, BMW's new and old, even a British two-seat ragtop, a Mini, and probably some I've forgot, I truly love my Gen2 2007 Prius. People who have never really lived with one have no idea, and instead have a bunch of pre-conceived notions. I happen to like the fact that there is no hydraulic power steering to leak, no starter motor to fix, no alternator, and only one tiny belt to drive the water pump. The AC runs off the battery, so when stopped at a stop light it just keeps on going with no lagging the engine. Just drive it and super easy to park. I do believe there is an NC or ND Miata in my future but right now the Prius is just a great car for my commute.

And it’s got a ton of room 280k miles on my 06 it’s a brilliant round town car in the busy area I live. It’s not exciting fun at all to drive though 😅. But it’s not pretending to be a sports car. I’m curious how the new one drives and how it’s like to live with but I’m afraid it’s given up alot if it’s utility for looks and it looks like the outward visibility is atrocious compared to the 2nd gen car. Yea it looks better and is more efficient but it looks like it’s half as useful as my old one 😕

So tiring when reviewers complain that a Prius is boring to drive, or not as fast as X. Guess what? It wasn’t designed to be. It WAS designed to be highly efficient, low emitting and ultra reliable. And it excels at all of those things. Perhaps that’s why a cab driver - someone who makes his living off his car - offered me more $ for mine than I paid for it 4 years ago. They’re THAT good.

Had a 2nd and 3rd Gen Prius. At 128 k the second Gen had failing batteries & leaked oil, and the service manager at the Toyota dealer advised me to get rid of it as fast as possible! Then bought a 3rd Gen all loaded up, including solar panels, drove it for about 40k, and it got rear ended in a hail storm by a pickup and was totaled. Replaced it with a 2015 Ford Fusion Titanium Hybrid, has 165k trouble free miles on it. Far superior driving experience(much quieter, more plush ride, etc.) while sacrificing only 2-4 mpg real world mountain driving. Recently tested new Prius in Boulder, great car but still not as comfortable or quiet as the Ford Fusion! It still seems a little too tinny and lacks some sound deadening. But it does look great!

I have had a few Priuses and now own a 2007 2nd gen and a 2011 3rd gen. I bought the 2011 with 231,000 miles for $4k. I quickly found out that it ran poorly and upon starting sounded like it had a rod knock. But after research, I saw that the sound was due to the engine having a hard time starting and it was probably due to excessive carbon buildup in the EGR system. I did the cleaning myself (learning a lot along the way) and found the EGR cooler completely blocked. I cleaning it and everything else, replacing the EGR valve, and now the car runs great. My point is there are many 3rd gen Priuses for sale with a lot of miles like mine and all will need the EGR system cleaned unless it has been recently done. But when that work is done, assuming the car was treated properly, it will be a great car again.

I love my 2012 Third-Gen Prius and, to me, it's one of the handsomest cars ever made. Growing up in Europe, I hate sedans and flabby large cars, so the Prius does it for me, especially its side profile. It has been flawlessly reliable, efficient, comfortable and quiet. What more could you want? And yes, in Power mode it has all the zip you need for highway merging etc. More than anything, it is different from every other cookie-cutter car on the road, and it is trying to be modern (as few cars in the US do, but as automakers like Citroen used to do all the time). The latest one looks fine but the cramped rear seat and lack of any interior color except black mean that I will probably pass (which is a shame because I would love a PHEV). Just to be clear, we could easily have afforded to replace this car every three years or so but we've never seen a car that would make it worthwhile. The only two cars that tempted me (the BMW i3 and the Honda Clarity PHEV) have both now become discontinued, but I was put off by the associations of the BMW's badge and the Clarity's lack of a hatch (we own a dog). It's just difficult to get excited about the vast majority of cars on the market.

For the Gen3, beware of the head gasket getting blown if it hasn't been fixed already, especially for 2010~2011 but other than that, insanely reliable. I drive mine to work 30 miles one way going ~80 on the freeway and it still gets in the top 30s for mpg and with a 10-ish gallon tank, that is where it is at home, cruising but should you find yourself stuck bumper to bumper, that is it's second home since it burns next to nothing.

Also in fuel consumption in real world, it is basically BETTER than all other two generations as it is lighter. I also so miss the small center console where it provides you with the max space in front seats. No useless center console. Toe, I never need a Prius for its speed or fun to drive. If I really want that I will have another 86 manual in my garage, I need the best fuel and space combo.

After daily driving a first gen, each gen since doesn’t come close to its simplicity and comfort. I like the manual shift lever, manual parking brake, the absence of traction control and the tiny, simple screens tucked into the dash. I’m 6’6” and fit with 2-3” of knee room from the dash and 2” of headroom. There aren’t any blind spots and it’s completely silent when driving under battery power alone, unlike the new one that emits a UFO sound. I have no need to upgrade and will be happy with my first gen for the foreseeable future daily driving 250 miles a week.

Best version is the Prius V. I am just over 6' 2.5" and find the rear seats to be absolutely dreadful in the regular version. We had a Prius V as a taxi a couple of times in Europe this past year. I don't know if it has a longer wheelbase, but I had plenty of leg room and loads of head room. Behind us it held 3 standard 24/26" suitcases (those are not the biggest, but descent size), plus three carry on bags, plus a folded up rollator. That's a shocking amount of trunk space. The taller roof with more wagon / estate shape really helped make it an excellent taxi. The driver in Madrid didn't seem to understand the concept of using regenerative brakes. He just drove at least twice the speed limit, and even through I could see traffic coming to a full stop a bit ahead, he'd keep accelerating till the second and then brake super hard. I bet he was NOT getting impressive mileage. The other drivers were more chill. The Prius V would serve most families very well, and do so with far better fuel economy than their cross overs. Too bad American buyers just absolutely don't want anything that remotely looks like a wagon. It was a supremely practical and economic car to operate. I should add that my daily drivers are a "small" Gen3 Mini Hard Top, and a "big" Gen2 Mini Countryman. I find it funny that the Countryman is big for a Mini, but still is one of the smallest cars on the road around me here in the US. In Europe the Gen2 Countryman looks really big on the road. The Prius V held a LOT more luggage in the trunk than the Countryman. We had to put on seat flat to get the same luggage with us to the airport that all fit on it's own in the Prius V taxi.

I went from a Gen 3 pearl white Prius to supersonic red plugin hybrid 2023 Prius. I'm not sure if this one is a 2010: it has a newer hubcap and taillight config as my 2010. I get a lot of head turns with the new Prius and people saying they can't believe the Prius now looks sexy (and with it being a plugin hybrid, it actually has more advantages than all the Teslas on the road in my area of Atlanta). Really did like the bump in performance. The Prime that I have has the glass roof instead of solar panel. The panel wouldn't really be advantageous for me since a lot of time the car is in a garage. What I did like about my top trim 2010 Prius was that it had a solar panel that had ventilation for when it was exposed in bright daylight (I believe the solar panel option was only with the 2010 year). That and the slightly better cargo space is what I miss. My 2010 Prius did have a bluetooth aux audio connection, but the other thing I like about the new Prime is that there's no DVD nav and I can sync with Apple Carplay.

The new Prius seems great (looking). I owned at 2006 and then a 2012 that I swapped out for a Model Y. I did not wait for the new Prius to be available because the new one--unlike the old--cannot function as my only car. The new prius cannot easily carry 4 adults, cannot haul stuff big-ish stuff from Home Depot and is a poor choice for a long trip. The Y OTOH can be my only car, can easily carry 4 adults, can haul stuff big-ish stuff from Home Depot and is a actually is a great choice for a long trip. I buy cars based on what they can do, not like Nathan, on how they look.

As a current owner of a 2021 XLE AWD with 33,000 miles and after test driving a 5th gen., I think Toyota is leaving behind their customers of the last 20 years and is chasing after a younger market. The Prius has always been a practical nonsense high mpg quality car. Yes, it looked strange but that was part of its charm. Want 50mpg, want a hatch that would swallow a MTB, handle any trip to Sam's, easily cruise 80mph and last 300,000 miles? I agree the average buyer was at least 50 and doesn't trade every 2 years, but they knew when it was time to trade in they were going to get another Prius. I owned a Miata, and knew I would have compromises when I bought it, but loved it for what it was. The Prius has given up too much for it's "Good Looks". Every reviewer has praised it for its looks and HP jump, I'm sure GEN X thinks it's now cool to be seen in a Prius. All for what cost? Here is what I noticed on my short test drive, ride very harsh with jazzy 19" wheel's ( I researched replacement tires and found it is the only car in the US that uses that size and cost 4 times more), this in not a NSX it's a Prius), entry height lower (remember your customer base is older and aren't as flexible), Back seat room suffers, Hatch opening smaller, rear view compromised and a dash layout wishing you had a yoke form a Tesla. Remember when Toyota went after the younger market with "Scion"? Maybe they should have also "upgraded" the badging to better fit the market they are going for.

Your description of the Prius customer was only years later after the 2nd Gen. Remember, the 2nd Gen was the IT car in 2004-2005 many celebrities were driving it, and it was a difficult car to buy because it was in very high demand. There was a 4-6 month waiting period and many dealers were charging above nsrp. It wasn't an inexpensive old people's car by any stretch. I paid $33,000 for a 2004 top trim which included a $3,000 premium over msrp. It's been the best car I've ever owned. Still have it, gave replaced a few things including the hybrid battery last year. It has 282,000 miles on it. Finally, bought a 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium last month after waiting 6 months for it but paid msrp this time. It's been a fantastic car and a true heir to the 2nd Gen. The compromises made on the new model are far outweighed by everything else in the car especially the power, EV capabilities, looks, and technology.

I found the new gen and the last gen that you sit way too low to the ground. It was enough to make me not want to buy one. It would have been fun if they had been lifted (a la Subaru Crosstrek), put in all wheel drive. I think they would add more customers that want a car but want to sit up higher.

I drove the new Prius, what a disappointment I am 5’7 and 1/2 and I still had to duck to get in the front, back seat was worse. No rear wiper and that screen in front of you gets Caught in the middle of the steering wheel. Even Consumer reports prefers the last gen in general. Toyota got too fancy with this model and not enough interior comfort . But the real deal breaker is driving down the road you can’t see the front of the car that’s bad?

When Toyota reshapes a model, they increase the price also. ChR is costing more than the previous version. Prius also. In a few years, these cars especially Corolla may get into the price of a BMW 5 series. Earlier it was only one third the price of a 5 series.

I'm in the absolute minority. I think the front end of the previous generation looks better than the new one. The new one looks like a futuristic space helmet with visor slit, while the previous one looks like a car. The previous one doesn't look like anything special, but I don't think it looks bad at all.

  • @johncipolletti5611

And I want to tell you that it isn't better on the 2023 model. First, being lower by 2 inches in the front and 4 inches in the back, it's harder to get in and out of. Now, the new one dropped the heads up display, and for some, the steering wheel gets in the way of the speedometer screen. Also, they say thatbthe 2023 is faster. In my 202, I have always beaten every car challenge off a red light! You have to just know how to drive it. Hey, are those wheels actually covered with hubcaps that pop off? Yep!

The cheap Model 3 sells for $37k. If Toyota could repackage something similar into a US-made fwd micro-Tacoma with a nominal 300 mi range for $25k, that might sell to tye new unsatisfied low-cost market segment for a while. But this is unlikely, since the development costs are massive and must be amortized over the first few hundred thousand vehicles, probably raising its price by $15,000 each. Further, they must make an aggressive expanded profit margin on a new model, probably $10K per vehicle. So if they could get the production cost down to $30k the vehicle would still sell north of $50k.. At $50k it's back in the over-saturated first adopter vanity market segment and fails the inexpensive market test. Toyota and Mazda are better off just making the best ice and hybrids in the world and leaving the success in EV world to Tesla and BYD and leave the gradual declines to Nissan, Subaru, Ford, VW, Volvo, MB, Chevy and Stellanus. The thing about the older Prius in this video, it will need a hybrid battery replacement very soon. I never like that flying buttress center console because it made the car feel smaller. The new Prius is much better has has more space on the inside other than the vertical headspace. Horizontally, there is more space all around.

They had to update it in order to desperately cling on to some shred of relevance in a world where hybrids are rapidly becoming pointless for passenger vehicles. For the price of any of the “interesting” Priuses, you would be way, way better off buying an EV. Priuses are, at best, efficient for an internal combustion engine vehicle. They are _NOT_ efficient. At all. They waste like 70% of their energy.
